The Right Water Hammer Arrestor for a Quiet Washing Machine

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best water hammer arrestor for a washing machine is usually not an exotic part. For most U.S. laundry rooms, the right answer is a pair of ASSE 1010-certified, Size AA, 3/4-inch female hose thread by 3/4-inch male hose thread washing-machine arrestors, one on the hot line and one on the cold line, installed as close as practical to the washer valves.

That setup typically costs about $30 to $70 in parts in 2026, takes 20 to 45 minutes if the laundry valves are accessible, and solves the sharp bang that happens when a washer’s fast-closing solenoid valve suddenly stops water flow. Good examples include Oatey Quiet Pipes 38600, SharkBite WHAWM34Z, and Sioux Chief MiniRester hose-thread models. The brand matters less than the sizing, certification, connection type, pressure rating, and placement.

On our job sites, we treat washing-machine water hammer as a small plumbing symptom that can point to a larger pressure or support problem. A screw-on arrestor may quiet the noise, but if the house has 90 psi static pressure, loose copper lines in the wall, or shutoff valves that barely turn, the better repair plan changes.

What Water Hammer Sounds Like at a Washer

Water hammer is the bang, thud, or pipe shock you hear when moving water is stopped suddenly. Washing machines are one of the most common causes because their internal solenoid valves open and close quickly during fill, rinse, and balance cycles. Instead of a slow hand-operated faucet closure, the washer snaps the flow off almost instantly.

The classic symptom is a single hard knock right when the washer stops filling. Some machines create a rapid series of smaller knocks because they pulse the valves during sensing or rinse cycles. The noise may come from behind the laundry box, inside the wall, above the ceiling, or near the water heater. Sound travels through pipe, framing, and drywall, so the loudest place is not always the source.

A true washer-related water hammer event usually lines up with one specific action: water flowing into the washer, then stopping. If the bang happens when nobody is using water, when hot-water pipes warm up, or when the washer spins, the problem may be pipe expansion, loose strapping, appliance vibration, or a failing valve instead.

The Best Default Choice: Two Size AA Hose-Thread Arrestors

For a standard residential washing machine, the best overall arrestor setup is simple: install two point-of-use arrestors, one on the hot supply and one on the cold supply. Use 3/4-inch hose-thread models made for washing machines, not random pipe-thread fittings. Washer hoses use garden-hose-style threads and seal with a rubber washer, not with tapered pipe threads.

Look for these specs on the packaging or product sheet:

  • Connection: 3/4-inch FHT x 3/4-inch MHT, meaning female hose thread on one side and male hose thread on the other.
  • Certification: ASSE 1010 listed or certified for water hammer arrestors.
  • Size: Size AA for typical point-of-use residential fixture and appliance applications.
  • Use: Potable-water compatible.
  • Rating: Suitable pressure and temperature ratings for domestic hot and cold water.
  • Orientation: Approved for the position you plan to use, whether vertical or horizontal.

Modern arrestors are different from old-style capped air chambers. Air chambers were just capped sections of pipe that could lose their air cushion over time as water absorbed the air. A modern arrestor uses a sealed gas or air cushion separated from the water, commonly with a piston or diaphragm design, so it is built for maintenance-free service when installed correctly.

Why two arrestors instead of one?

Modern washers do not always use hot and cold water in the old predictable way. They may pulse the cold valve, blend warm water, add short bursts during rinsing, or open and close both valves during sensing. Installing only one arrestor is a common shortcut, but it leaves half the system untreated.

If the budget difference is $15 to $35 for the second arrestor, we recommend installing the pair while the washer is already pulled out. It is the cleaner repair, and it avoids guessing which valve is causing the hammer.

Good Product Examples for U.S. Homes

There are plenty of usable washing-machine arrestors on the shelf. We prefer recognizable plumbing brands with listed specs because these parts sit under pressure every hour of the day. You do not need the most expensive option, but you should not buy an unlisted mystery fitting to save a few dollars behind a washer.

Product type Best use Typical 2026 cost What to check
Oatey Quiet Pipes 38600 washing-machine arrester Simple hose-thread washer hookups About $18 each at major retailers 3/4-inch hose threads, ASSE listing, washer condition
SharkBite WHAWM34Z washing-machine hammer arrestor Accessible hot and cold laundry valves Commonly in the $15 to $35 each range Orientation allowed by manufacturer and distance from valve
Sioux Chief MiniRester 660-HB or similar hose-thread model Point-of-use residential appliance installation Commonly in the $15 to $35 each range Correct hose-thread model, not a pipe-thread model

The best product for a finished laundry room is usually the one that fits without stressing the washer hose, allows the washer to sit back without kinking the lines, and remains accessible. A compact arrestor installed correctly beats a premium-looking part installed too far away or jammed behind the machine.

Where the Arrestor Should Be Installed

Water hammer arrestors work best close to the fast-closing valve that causes the pressure surge. For a washer, that valve is inside the washing machine, but the practical installation point is usually at the laundry shutoff valves or at the washer inlets. Many hose-thread arrestors are designed to screw directly between the valve and hose, or between the hose and the washer.

Manufacturer guidance commonly calls for installation within 6 feet of the fixture or valve causing the noise. In a laundry room, that means the arrestor should be at the washer box or immediately behind the machine, not on a random branch line across the basement.

At the laundry box valves

This is usually the cleanest DIY location. You shut off the hot and cold laundry valves, disconnect the washer hoses from the valves, thread the arrestors onto the valves, and reconnect the hoses to the arrestors. The arrestors remain visible and serviceable, and the water shock is controlled near the appliance.

At the washer inlets

This can also work, especially where the laundry box is cramped. The downside is clearance. Some washers sit close to the wall, and adding rigid fittings at the appliance can create hose bends or prevent the machine from sliding back properly. If the hose has to kink to make the connection, choose another location or use a different arrestor style.

Inside the wall or on branch piping

In-wall arrestors make sense during remodeling, new construction, or when a plumber is already replacing the laundry box. They can be a better long-term detail, but they are not usually worth opening a finished wall just to solve a normal washer bang if hose-thread units will fit.

How to Diagnose Before Buying Parts

Spend 10 minutes confirming the problem before installing anything. It keeps a simple job from turning into trial and error.

1. Recreate the noise

Start a washer fill cycle. While water is actively entering the machine, pause or cancel the cycle and listen for the exact shutoff. A sharp bang at that moment points toward water hammer. Repeat with cold, warm, and hot settings if your washer allows it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Test hot and cold separately

If possible, run a cold-only fill and then a warm or hot fill. Some homes hammer only on the cold side because that valve sees more frequent use. We still usually install both arrestors, but this test helps confirm the source.

3. Check static water pressure

Use a hose-bib pressure gauge, usually $10 to $20, on an exterior spigot, laundry connection, or water heater drain if appropriate. Most residential plumbing references treat 80 psi as a practical upper limit. If your static pressure is above that, do not treat the arrestor as the whole repair.

In a typical house, we like to see pressure strong enough for fixtures to perform but not so high that hoses, fill valves, ice makers, toilet valves, and water heater components are constantly stressed. If the gauge reads 85, 95, or 110 psi, the pressure-reducing valve may need adjustment or replacement, and thermal expansion control may need to be checked.

4. Inspect the laundry valves and hoses

Before turning anything, look at the condition of the shutoff valves. If they are corroded, crusted with mineral buildup, leaking at the stem, or hard to move, do not force them. A seized valve can turn a $40 quieting project into an urgent plumbing repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also inspect the washer hoses. If they are bulged, cracked, kinked, rusted at the couplings, or older than about 5 years, replacing them while the washer is pulled out is sensible. A pair of braided stainless washer hoses commonly costs about $15 to $40 in 2026.

DIY Installation Steps for Hose-Thread Arrestors

If the laundry valves are accessible and working, this is a reasonable homeowner project. Plan on 20 to 45 minutes. Have a small bucket, towels, adjustable pliers, new hose washers, and the two arrestors ready before moving the washer.

  1. Unplug the washer. You will be working around water and metal hose fittings, so remove power first.
  2. Turn off both laundry valves. Turn them gently. If either valve will not close, stop and call a plumber.
  3. Relieve pressure. Set the washer to fill for a few seconds or carefully loosen one hose over a bucket.
  4. Disconnect the hoses from the valves. Keep track of hot and cold. Expect a small amount of water to drain.
  5. Inspect rubber washers. Hose-thread connections seal with rubber washers. Replace flattened, cracked, or missing washers.
  6. Thread one arrestor onto each valve. Hand-tighten first, then snug slightly with pliers if needed. Do not overtighten.
  7. Reconnect the washer hoses. Keep hot to hot and cold to cold. Avoid kinks and sharp bends.
  8. Turn the valves back on slowly. Check every connection with a dry paper towel.
  9. Run a fill-and-stop test. Start the washer fill cycle, stop it during active fill, and listen for the change.
  10. Recheck for leaks after 10 minutes. Look again after the first full wash cycle.

Do not use thread tape on standard washer hose-thread connections unless the specific product instructions call for it. The seal comes from the rubber washer, not from the threads. Tape can hide the real problem, which is often a missing washer, damaged gasket, cross-threaded fitting, or overtightened connection.

What It Should Cost in 2026

For a normal laundry hookup, the cost is mostly parts. Professional cost rises when access is poor, valves are bad, or the repair needs pipe work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Scenario Typical 2026 cost What is included
DIY screw-on arrestors only $30 to $70 Two 3/4-inch washing-machine arrestors before tax
DIY with small extras $40 to $110 Arrestors plus hose washers, pressure gauge, or new washer hoses
Simple plumber visit $150 to $300 Accessible valves, screw-on or minor fitting work, service-call minimum
Plumber with modifications $250 to $600 Cutting copper, PEX, or CPVC; replacing valves; installing an outlet box; opening limited drywall
Pressure-related repair Several hundred dollars or more Pressure-reducing valve, expansion tank, or broader diagnosis beyond arrestors

National plumbing service pricing varies heavily by region, but many 2026 project ranges fall around $182 to $500, with service-call fees commonly around $150 to $250 and hourly labor often around $75 to $200. That is why a small arrestor job can feel expensive when hired out: the parts may be cheap, but the truck, labor, insurance, and warranty are not.

If the washer is stacked, built into cabinetry, located in a tight closet, or served by old valves that have not moved in years, budget extra time and risk. Access is often the difference between a quick fix and a half-day repair.

When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro

DIY makes sense when the laundry valves are exposed, easy to turn, dry, and in good condition. If you can pull the washer forward safely, shut off both valves, and disconnect the hoses without fighting corrosion, installing hose-thread arrestors is a straightforward job.

Hire a plumber when the valves are seized, the laundry box is recessed too tightly, the fittings are corroded, the pipes move in the wall, or you need to cut into copper, PEX, or CPVC. Also hire a pro if the water pressure is high, the whole house bangs, or the washer hookup is on the second floor where a leak can damage finished ceilings below.

On remodels and new laundry rooms, we prefer to plan the arrestors into the plumbing rather than add them as an afterthought. That may mean an arrestor-equipped washing-machine outlet box or engineered arrestors on the hot and cold branch lines. It is cleaner, more serviceable, and easier to inspect before drywall closes.

Code, Safety, and Permit Notes

Plumbing codes recognize water hammer as a real design issue, not just an annoyance. The International Plumbing Code requires water hammer arrestors where quick-closing valves are installed, and those arrestors must comply with ASSE 1010. Local adoption varies by jurisdiction and code year, but the practical takeaway is consistent: use listed arrestors and place them where they can actually control the shock.

For a homeowner adding screw-on arrestors to existing washer valves, a permit is usually not required in many areas because you are not altering the concealed plumbing system. For replacing a laundry box, changing shutoff valves inside the wall, modifying supply piping, or doing work in a multifamily building, permit requirements can change. When in doubt, call the local building department or use a licensed plumber.

Safety matters more than the part. Water under pressure can cause serious damage if a fitting leaks behind a washer. Always leave the arrestors accessible, avoid burying screw-on fittings in a wall, and check the connections after the first cycle. If the washer is on an upper floor, consider a drain pan, leak sensor, and good braided hoses as part of the same maintenance visit.

Why Pipes Still Bang After Installing Arrestors

If the noise improves but does not disappear, the arrestors may be working while another issue remains. The most common causes are high pressure, loose pipe supports, poor placement, or a different fixture causing the shock.

Start with pressure. If the house is above 80 psi, fix that before chasing more arrestors. A pressure-reducing valve that has failed or drifted out of adjustment can make every fast-closing valve in the home louder and harder on the system.

Next, look for loose piping. An arrestor absorbs the hydraulic shock, but it cannot fully silence a pipe that is free to jump against framing. We see this in basements, crawl spaces, laundry walls, and ceiling bays where pipe straps are missing or holes through framing are oversized. Securing accessible piping with proper clamps or isolators can make as much difference as the arrestor.

Placement also matters. An arrestor installed too far from the washer may not absorb the surge effectively. If the arrestor is on a branch line several rooms away, move the protection closer to the appliance.

Finally, confirm the noise is actually from the washing machine. Dishwashers, ice makers, toilet fill valves, irrigation valves, and quick-closing faucets can all create similar sounds. Shut off or test one fixture at a time until the timing is clear.

Our Practical Recommendation

For most homeowners, buy two ASSE 1010-certified Size AA washing-machine arrestors with 3/4-inch hose-thread connections. Install them at the hot and cold laundry valves if there is room. Replace questionable hose washers or washer hoses while the machine is out. Test the washer before and after by stopping the fill cycle during active flow.

If the pressure gauge reads over 80 psi, or if more than one fixture causes banging, treat the arrestors as only part of the diagnosis. High pressure, loose pipe supports, failed pressure-reducing valves, and thermal expansion problems deserve attention because they affect the whole plumbing system, not just the laundry room noise.

The right repair is not complicated, but it is specific. Correct size, certified part, close placement, sound valves, and normal house pressure are what turn a noisy washer hookup into a quiet, reliable one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do washing machines need one or two water hammer arrestors?

Use two for most washing machines: one on the hot supply and one on the cold supply. Modern washers can pulse both valves during fill and rinse cycles, so installing only one arrestor can leave part of the problem untreated.

What size water hammer arrestor do I need for a washing machine?

Most residential washers use Size AA point-of-use arrestors with 3/4-inch female hose thread by 3/4-inch male hose thread connections. Check that the part is ASSE 1010-certified and rated for potable domestic water.

Where should a washing machine water hammer arrestor be installed?

Install it as close as practical to the washer’s quick-closing valves. In most laundry rooms, that means at the hot and cold laundry shutoff valves or directly at the washer inlets, with manufacturer-approved orientation and adequate hose clearance.

How much does it cost to install washer water hammer arrestors in 2026?

DIY parts usually cost about $30 to $70 for a pair. A simple plumber visit often runs $150 to $300, while jobs involving pipe modifications, valve replacement, or laundry box work commonly land around $250 to $600.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are my pipes still banging after installing arrestors?

Persistent banging may be caused by high static water pressure, loose pipe supports, poor arrestor placement, a failed pressure-reducing valve, undersized piping, or a different fast-closing fixture elsewhere in the home.

Do water hammer arrestors wear out?

Modern ASSE 1010 arrestors are designed for maintenance-free service, but they can fail or lose effectiveness over time. If hammer returns after years of quiet operation, verify water pressure first, then consider replacing the arrestors.
