There is not enough independent evidence to name a best water-based air purifier. The available study concerns a single research prototype, not a comparison of current products. If your priority is measurable particle removal, compare portable air cleaners by room-appropriate CADR; a HEPA air cleaner is a practical alternative, but it is not water-based.
What does “water-based air purifier” mean?
The label does not describe one standardized design. A 2022 peer-reviewed study examined a prototype that pulled air across a 2.54-centimeter-thick polyurethane sponge soaked with five litres of water. That mechanism should not be assumed for every product marketed as water-based or as an air washer.
The study tested the prototype in one closed laboratory room and one semi-outdoor space, measuring particle concentrations at selected locations and times. Its authors reported better cleaning of larger particles than smaller ones; the most favorable observed indoor result was after 15 minutes at the air-inlet measurement location. These are observations about that prototype under its test conditions, not a retail-product removal rate or verified room-coverage figure. Read the 2022 study.
What the prototype study cannot establish
- The authors reported that PM0.3 was not significantly reduced.
- Their instruments could not measure particles at the relevant COVID-19 diameters, and the study did not test whether viruses remained viable after entering the water.
- The study therefore does not show that the prototype—or consumer water-based products generally—prevents infection or provides virus protection.
- The measured air-cleaning volume was far below the ventilation fan’s specification, so fan specifications alone should not be treated as proof of cleaning performance.
The prototype’s water volume declined from five litres to 4.5 litres after three hours of continuous operation. The authors estimated evaporation at about 0.167 litres per hour in their test conditions: 17.3–22.9 °C and 70.1–82.2% relative humidity. Those figures do not predict water use or performance in a commercial unit.

How to compare an air cleaner for your room
For particle removal, use the product’s clean air delivery rate (CADR) and room-size guidance rather than a general “purifying” claim. CADR measures particle-cleaning performance; a higher CADR can serve a larger area. The EPA’s room-area estimates below assume an eight-foot ceiling and are guidance, not a product guarantee.

For high ceilings or an open floor plan, consider the larger effective space rather than relying on floor area alone. The EPA notes that many portable cleaners achieve high particle CADR with HEPA filters. Its guide also estimates that people spend about 90% of their time indoors, mostly at home; that is a reason to consider indoor air quality, not a performance claim for any device. Match the device to the pollutant
- Dust, pollen and other particles: Compare CADR and room coverage. If you choose a conventional HEPA unit, understand that it filters air rather than cleaning it with water.
- Odors and gases: CADR does not rate gas removal. Look for activated carbon or another absorbent medium specifically intended for gases; the EPA says thicker carbon media can be more effective.
- Mold: An air cleaner may capture some airborne mold particles, but it cannot repair a leak, dry a persistently damp area or remove the moisture source. Correct the moisture problem and address cleanup.
Practical checks before buying
Check usable performance, not just a headline claim
Look for a clearly stated CADR and room-size rating for the particle-cleaning job you need. A product marketed as water-based should also provide documentation for its own mechanism and performance; do not infer those details from the category name. EPA does not certify or recommend specific portable air-cleaner brands or models.
Account for noise, placement and upkeep
- Noise: Check the published noise level at the fan speed you can realistically tolerate. The EPA gives about 50 dB as roughly the noise of a modern refrigerator. Higher fan speeds and longer operation generally move more air through a cleaner.
- Placement: Put a portable unit where people spend time. Keep its airflow unobstructed and away from curtains or other blockages.
- Maintenance: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Dirty or overloaded filters perform poorly. For any water-based unit, check that the maker gives clear directions for changing water and cleaning the device; maintenance intervals vary by product.
Avoid ozone claims and separate energy labels from cleaning claims
Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone. The EPA describes ozone as a lung irritant and says ozone at levels that do not exceed public-health standards has little potential to remove indoor contaminants. An ENERGY STAR label concerns energy efficiency, not air-cleaning effectiveness. EPA guidance on ozone generators sold as air cleaners.

Use air cleaning alongside ventilation and source control
Air cleaning can complement ventilation and reducing pollution at its source, but it does not replace either. The EPA’s indoor-air guidance emphasizes source control, ventilation and filtration as complementary approaches. A portable cleaner also cannot resolve a moisture source behind mold or guarantee a health benefit. See the EPA’s guidance on improving indoor air quality.
