There is no evidence-backed single “best” washing machine liquid in the available comparisons. Choose a detergent labeled for your washer—especially an HE-labeled formula for a high-efficiency machine—then follow the package directions for your load and the washer manual. For stains or cold-water cycles, compare products by those specific needs rather than assuming a broad performance winner.
How to choose a liquid detergent
Start with the washer, then consider the laundry you wash most often. The American Cleaning Institute says HE detergents are formulated to clean effectively in low-water conditions. Tide likewise advises looking for HE labeling; it says regular detergents can create too many suds in lower-water machines. These are consumer guidance and manufacturer guidance, respectively—not the result of an independent product test. Read the washer manual and the current detergent label before use.
- Washer compatibility: For an HE washer, choose a product labeled for HE use rather than assuming a smaller dose of regular detergent will work the same way.
- Load and soil: Check directions for load size and soil level. The American Cleaning Institute advises adjusting amounts for small or lightly soiled loads, soft water, large or heavily soiled loads, and hard water.
- Specific laundry needs: If stain pretreatment or cold-water washing matters to you, check that product’s instructions for that use.
- Other preferences: Compare scent and current cost per load using the packaging and retailer information available to you. No consistent current price comparison or independent performance dataset is established here.
How much detergent should I use?
Use the dose on the current product label that matches your load conditions; do not dose solely by how much water the washer uses. The American Cleaning Institute puts it this way: “The amount of detergent needed for the best cleaning performance depends on the size and soil level of the laundry load, not on the amount of water the HE washing machine uses.” Water hardness and the detergent’s directions also matter.
For example, Tide’s Canadian Original Liquid product page displays cap bars 1, 3, and 5 for medium, large, and full HE loads. That is a product-specific example, not a universal dosing scale. Package instructions can change, so use the directions on the bottle you have and check the washer manual.

Is regular detergent okay in an HE washer?
Prefer detergent labeled for HE use. Tide’s HE FAQ warns that regular detergents can create too many suds, even at low doses. Using less regular detergent is not a substitute for checking the HE labeling and washer instructions. Everyday HE loads

Stain pretreatment
For blood stains, Tide’s US instructions say to rinse with cold water, soak in a solution of liquid detergent and cold water for up to five minutes, then wash with the appropriate detergent dose. Tide says to put detergent in an HE dispenser or, for a non-HE machine, directly into the drum before adding clothes. Follow the garment’s care instructions and the directions for your specific product. Tide’s blood-stain instructions are manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparison of stain-removal performance.
Cold-water cycles
Tide Plus Coldwater Clean is marketed for cold washes and has product-specific dose directions. That positioning may suit shoppers who prefer a cold-water formula, but it does not establish that it outperforms other detergents in cold water; no independent comparison supporting that conclusion is available here.

How to pretreat a stain with liquid detergent
- Check the garment’s care label and the detergent’s instructions.
- For a blood stain, rinse with cold water, following Tide’s US guidance.
- Soak in a mixture of liquid detergent and cold water for up to five minutes, as Tide directs for blood stains.
- Wash using the dose appropriate for the load. Put detergent in the HE dispenser for an HE washer; Tide instructs users of non-HE machines to add it directly to the drum before the clothes.
Liquid or premeasured detergent?
If measuring liquid is inconvenient, detergent pods are an alternative format rather than a liquid recommendation. Tide says its PODS are HE-compatible and should be placed in the empty drum before laundry. Follow the current pod package and washer instructions. Tide’s PODS instructions describe the manufacturer’s use directions.
