The right walnut wood filler depends on whether the furniture is unfinished or already finished, how large the defect is, and whether you need to sand the repair or match a stain. Timbermate offers a walnut-colored interior filler; Minwax products cover stainable repairs, finished-surface touch-ups and larger damaged areas. None guarantees an invisible match, so test the color and finish on scrap or an inconspicuous spot first.
How to choose a filler for walnut
Start with the surface and the repair, not the color name on the container. A filler labeled “walnut” may not match a particular walnut board, stain, age or existing finish. Decide whether you need a hard, sandable repair or a non-hardening touch-up, and whether stain or a clear coat will go on afterward.
- Unfinished wood with a small defect that will be stained: consider Minwax Stainable Wood Filler.
- Minor marks on a finished piece: consider Minwax Wood Putty, which is applied after staining and topcoating and is not sandable.
- A larger hole or damaged or rotted wood: Minwax directs users to High Performance Wood Filler for larger repairs; it can be stained or painted, but may not match the surrounding wood.
- A walnut-colored interior filler: Timbermate lists a Walnut version for putty, grain, edge and crack-filling uses.
These are different use cases, not a tested ranking: the manufacturers’ product descriptions and directions do not establish a head-to-head winner.
Walnut filler options
| Product | Best fit | Finish and repair notes |
|---|---|---|
| Timbermate 500g – Walnut | Interior putty, grain, edge or crack filling when a walnut-colored filler is desired. | The manufacturer lists a Walnut-colored version. It does not promise a match to every walnut species, stain or existing finish. |
| Minwax Stainable Wood Filler | Small defects in unfinished wood before staining or painting. | Designed for Minwax penetrating stains, including oil- and water-based stains. Minwax says to test on scrap wood first and not to use it for holes larger than 3/4 inch. |
| Minwax Wood Putty | Minor scratches, gouges and nail holes on a finished surface. | Non-hardening and not sandable. Apply after staining and topcoating, then wipe away excess. |
| Minwax High Performance Wood Filler | Larger repairs and damaged or rotted wood. | Mixed with hardener and worked within a short working time. It can be stained or painted after hardening, but Minwax cautions that it absorbs stain differently from wood, making an exact match unlikely. |
For a walnut-colored filler: Timbermate
Timbermate lists a Walnut-colored product and describes its interior-grade filler line for putty, grain, edge and crack-filling uses. That makes it a direct option when you want a walnut-colored filler, but the color label is not a guarantee that it will disappear against your particular furniture. Compare a test patch after the intended finish has been applied.

For small repairs before staining: Minwax Stainable Wood Filler
Minwax describes this filler for small defects in unfinished wood and says it is designed for Minwax penetrating stains, including oil- and water-based products. The manufacturer recommends testing stain and filler together on scrap wood because the finished appearance can vary.
Minwax says not to use this product on holes larger than 3/4 inch; for larger holes it points users to High Performance Wood Filler. For rotted wood, Minwax directs users to strengthen the fibers with wood hardener before applying its stainable filler.

Apply it before stain or topcoat
- Make sure the wood is clean and dry, with dirt, grease, oil and loose particles removed.
- Use a putty knife to press filler into the defect. Leave it slightly proud of the surrounding surface, then remove excess.
- Let it dry completely. Minwax gives about two hours for common shallow repairs; deeper repairs can take 2–6 hours when filled in 1/4-inch layers. The time depends on repair depth.
- Sand the filler flush and remove sanding residue before staining, topcoating or painting.
Minwax says its Stainable Wood Filler can also be directly topcoated with a clear finish or painted. See the manufacturer’s product directions for the complete instructions.
For a finished piece: Minwax Wood Putty
Minwax Wood Putty is a non-hardening touch-up product for minor scratches, gouges and nail holes, with colors matched to Minwax Wood Finish stains. Its directions call for staining and topcoating first, then applying putty and wiping off excess. Because it will not harden to a sandable surface, it is not the choice for a repair you need to shape or sand flush.

For larger or damaged areas: High Performance Wood Filler
Minwax identifies High Performance Wood Filler for larger repairs and damaged or rotted wood. The product is mixed with hardener and has a short working time, so follow the label instructions. Although it can be stained or painted after hardening, Minwax cautions that it absorbs stain differently from wood and an exact color match is unlikely. Choose it for the repair’s scale and condition rather than expecting it to blend invisibly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to improve the color match
- Test the filler on scrap walnut or an inconspicuous area, using the same stain or clear finish planned for the repair.
- Judge the sample after the finish is applied; the filler and surrounding wood may take color differently.
- For a finished piece, avoid sanding into the surrounding finish when using a non-hardening touch-up putty.
- If the repair needs to be sanded or shaped, choose a hardening filler intended for that job rather than Wood Putty.
