Champion’s WCM28 and RWC series are documented window models approved for window or wall installation; confirm the opening, airflow at operating pressure, and climate-zone capacity before buying. Direct evaporative cooling needs water, electricity, and a planned route for indoor air to leave.
Best Wall Evaporative Cooler Types for 2026
“Wall evaporative cooler” can refer to different systems. A wall or window direct unit draws outdoor air through wet media and supplies cooled, humidified air indoors; larger ducted systems serve a whole home. Match the system to the room, climate, opening, and installation conditions rather than relying on a product category label alone.
1. Window and Wall Direct Evaporative Coolers
These units mount in a window or a framed wall opening and supply outdoor air through wet media. The DOE Building America Solution Center recommends calculating airflow from local climate conditions and home volume, then selecting a unit with airflow close to the required CFM. Manufacturer area estimates are approximate and vary by climate zone.
Champion’s WCM28 and RWC35, RWC44, RWC46, and RWC50 are documented as window models that can be installed in a window or wall. Check current manuals for opening dimensions, airflow at operating pressure, mounting requirements, and electrical and water connections.

2. Portable Room Evaporative Coolers
Portable units sit on the floor and do not require a through-wall opening. Their usefulness depends on the specific model and space; they are a separate category from wall/window units.
Best use: spot cooling or situations where a fixed installation is not suitable. Check the manufacturer’s requirements for water, ventilation, and service.
3. Whole-House Rooftop, Wall, or Ducted Systems
Larger systems can supply a home through ductwork. DOE guidance notes that wall or ground placement may make maintenance easier than roof placement, but the right mounting position depends on access, opening dimensions, duct arrangement, utilities, drainage, and service clearance. Follow ACCA Manual D for duct design where applicable.

How to Size a Wall Evaporative Cooler
Start with the local cooling design wet-bulb conditions and determine an appropriate air-change rate (ACH) for the climate. The DOE Building America Solution Center recommends calculating airflow from ACH and home volume, then choosing a unit close to that CFM.
CFM = ACH × (floor area × wall height) ÷ 60
Use consistent units: floor area in square feet and wall height in feet give volume in cubic feet. Use manufacturer sizing guidance as a cross-check, not square footage alone. Confirm actual airflow at operating pressure and consider room layout, climate, duct conditions, and relief air.
Compare Models on More Than Area Claims
When comparing units, check climate-zone capacity and airflow, required opening and mounting type, media type and replacement access, water and electrical requirements, controls and fan speeds, maintenance access, noise and efficiency evidence, and availability of service parts. DOE and manufacturer material does not substitute for checking the current manual for the exact model.

A wall or ground installation can improve maintenance access, but the opening, structure, utilities, drainage, and manufacturer clearances still determine what is feasible. Plan for water supply, electrical service, control wiring, drainage, and—if the unit is ducted—duct design.

Choose a location that supports good air distribution and provides access to the unit for service. Check the required opening dimensions and clearances in the current manual. Plan water, power, control wiring, drainage, ductwork if needed, and access for maintenance before cutting or mounting.
2. Provide a Relief-Air Path
Direct evaporative coolers bring outdoor air indoors, so air must be able to leave. The DOE Building America Solution Center recommends 2 square feet of unrestricted relief area for every 1,000 CFM. Screens or louvers reduce free airflow, so the gross opening may need to be larger to provide the required unrestricted area. The DOE guide recommends ceiling vents with barometric or mechanically operated dampers for relevant installations.
Choose relief openings based on the actual system design. Do not assume that a small open window or an intermittent bath fan provides adequate relief.
3. Plan Water, Electrical, and Drainage
Verify the exact unit’s water, power, and control requirements and plan drainage before installation. For wall-mounted equipment, consider how the unit will be serviced and how water will be managed. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and applicable local requirements.

4. Check Ductwork and Controls
For a ducted installation, follow ACCA Manual D for duct design where applicable. Compare control options, fan speeds, and air-bypass capability, along with mounting configuration and maintenance access.
Maintenance and Winter Storage
Plan for routine media and water-system maintenance and make sure replacement parts are accessible for the chosen model. DOE guidance recommends selecting an off-season cover where available. When winterizing, drain and dry the unit and remove mineral deposits as directed by the manufacturer. Follow the exact model’s maintenance instructions.
Climate and Performance Limits
Direct evaporative cooling is most useful in hot, dry weather; humid conditions reduce its usefulness. The DOE Building America Solution Center recommends assessing local cooling design wet-bulb conditions rather than relying on outdoor dry-bulb temperature alone. A manufacturer’s climate-zone area estimate is approximate, not a universal capacity rating.
If local conditions are humid or the required airflow, relief path, or installation cannot be provided, compare other cooling approaches with a qualified professional before committing to a wall opening.

Which wall evaporative coolers are documented for wall installation?
Champion lists the WCM28 and RWC35, RWC44, RWC46, and RWC50 as window models with window and wall installation. Confirm current model details, opening dimensions, airflow, and installation instructions with the manufacturer before purchase.
How do I size an evaporative cooler?
Assess local cooling design wet-bulb conditions, select an appropriate ACH, and calculate CFM from floor area and wall height using the DOE Building America Solution Center formula. Then choose a model with airflow close to the result and verify its current specifications and installation conditions.
How much relief air does an evaporative cooler need?
The DOE Building America Solution Center recommends 2 square feet of unrestricted relief area per 1,000 CFM. Screens and louvers reduce free area, so account for that when planning the gross opening.
Are manufacturer square-footage ratings reliable for every home?
No. The Champion figures are approximate estimates by climate zone, not universal capacity ratings or independent comparisons. Check actual CFM, system pressure, home volume, layout, and current installation requirements.
What maintenance should I plan for?
Follow the current model manual for maintenance and winter storage. DOE guidance recommends an off-season cover where available, and draining, drying, and removing mineral deposits during winterization.
