Best Video Doorbells Without a Subscription to Beat Price Hikes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: For most U.S. homeowners with existing doorbell wiring, the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi is the strongest subscription-free choice. It records locally, supports live view, motion alerts, two-way audio, detection, and playback without requiring a monthly recording plan.

If you need battery power, choose the eufy Video Doorbell E340. Apple Home users should look at the Aqara Video Doorbell G4, while homes with Ethernet cabling are better matched to the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE. The UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro is the premium option for households that already own, or are prepared to buy into, the UniFi Protect system.

The important distinction is between no required subscription and no cloud service whatsoever. Every recommendation below keeps meaningful recording and playback available through local storage, a hub, an NVR, or a local smart-home recorder after any trial period ends. Optional cloud features may still exist.

Best subscription-free video doorbells at a glance

This ranking is based on documented post-trial functionality rather than hands-on testing. A doorbell qualifies for the strict ranking only if its useful security features do not disappear when a paid cloud plan is declined.

Pick Best for Storage and subscription position Main limitation
Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi Most wired homes Local microSD, Reolink NVR, or Home Hub; core alerts, playback, and two-way audio do not require a monthly fee Requires wired power; this model’s documented microSD limit is 256GB
eufy Video Doorbell E340 Battery installations and package visibility Dual cameras and 8GB of built-in local storage; optional HomeBase S380 expansion Battery behavior varies with settings and activity; HomeBase expansion costs extra
Aqara Video Doorbell G4 Apple Home and HomeKit households Local microSD storage in the indoor chime, local facial recognition, and seven days of free event-cloud storage 1080p video; 24/7 recording requires wired power
Reolink Video Doorbell PoE New construction and Ethernet-ready homes Power and data over Ethernet, local recording, person detection, and no required recurring recording fee Requires Ethernet cabling and compatible PoE equipment
UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro Existing UniFi Protect owners Local Protect processing and storage architecture without mandatory camera-cloud recording High upfront ecosystem cost; requires UniFi Protect hardware

Price note: The Reolink WiFi model appeared at approximately $137.19 on the official U.S. store in the research snapshot checked August 11, 2026. The store also showed other prices and promotions, so treat that figure as a dated check rather than a permanent MSRP. Product availability, regional compatibility, and subscription terms should be rechecked before buying.

Best overall for wired homes: Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi

The Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi is the most balanced answer for a homeowner who already has traditional doorbell wiring and wants to avoid future cloud-plan price increases. It records at 2560×1920, or 5MP, and supports local recording to a microSD card, a Reolink NVR, or a Reolink Home Hub.

#1 Best Overall
REOLINK Video Doorbell WiFi 2K Wired Camera, 4:3 Wide View Outdoor Camera | No Subscription Local Storage, AI Detection, 5G&2.4G WiFi, Two-Way Talk, Front Door Home Security, Customized Reolink Chime
  • 2K Super HD Day & Night! Incredible 2K HD, with advanced HDR/3D DNR and distortion correction technologies, brings you sharp and detailed images even in low light conditions.
  • 2.4/5GHz WiFi & Waterproof! No worry about network disconnection; its 5GHz WiFi ensures a stable and fluent network experience. No worry about harsh weather as well; it's waterproof!
  • 4:3 &180° Wide Viewing Angle! Find the right position for your doorbell with its 15° wedge kit and enjoy the super wide field of view (4:3 aspect ratio). Get more extra surrounding details for better and quicker responses.
  • Chime V2 Included! Plug the chime included to any electrical socket at any room and be confidently alerted when visitors "knock". You can choose 1 of its 10 tunes and adjust its volume.
  • Answer the Door Faster! With its built-in mic and speaker, you can hear and talk back to the visitors even if you're not at home. You can also preset voice messages or automatic replies for times when you're occupied.

Most importantly, the subscription-free functions are the functions buyers actually need from a security doorbell: motion alerts, two-way audio, live viewing, recording, and playback. The documented feature set also includes person and package detection. That makes it a more defensible no-subscription recommendation than a camera that merely keeps live view available while locking recorded history behind a plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it is the default pick

  • Useful resolution: 5MP video gives it more detail than the 1080p Aqara G4, although resolution alone does not guarantee better identification at every mounting distance or lighting condition.
  • Flexible local storage: Use the doorbell’s microSD slot, a Reolink NVR, or a Home Hub. The support specification lists microSD capacity up to 256GB for this WiFi model.
  • No mandatory monthly recording fee: The core recording and playback workflow remains available locally.
  • Simple system design: A homeowner can begin with a card and later move to a hub or NVR if longer retention or centralized storage becomes important.

The principal trade-off is installation. This is a wired doorbell, not a battery-first solution, and it depends on a suitable existing doorbell circuit and reliable WiFi at the entry. For a renovation or new build, that is usually easier to solve before finishes are closed than after the fact. Verify the manufacturer’s power requirements and local electrical requirements before connecting it; use a qualified installer when the existing circuit is uncertain.

Best battery and dual-camera option: eufy Video Doorbell E340

The eufy Video Doorbell E340 is the better fit when running doorbell wiring is impractical or when the front entry needs more package visibility. Eufy describes it as a dual-camera, 2K doorbell with color night vision. Its second view is intended to help users see the area below the main camera, which is particularly relevant when parcels are left close to the door.

The E340 includes 8GB of built-in storage. Eufy says that capacity can hold up to 60 days of event-based recordings, depending on how many events the camera captures. A HomeBase S380 can expand the storage arrangement. Eufy also states that notifications, recordings, and playback are available without a subscription.

What to consider before choosing it

  • It avoids the basic cloud-plan problem: The included local storage means the buyer does not have to start paying simply to review recorded events.
  • It suits battery installations: This is the most practical pick in the group when the entry cannot conveniently receive traditional doorbell wiring.
  • It is useful for deliveries: The dual-camera design and 2K video are the main reasons to choose it over a simpler single-view doorbell.
  • Do not assume a fixed battery schedule: Battery life depends on activity, settings, network conditions, temperature, and how often the doorbell is accessed. The available research does not establish a universal battery-life figure.
  • HomeBase is optional but not free: The doorbell works with built-in storage, while the S380 adds capacity and another piece of hardware to purchase and install.

For a renter, a homeowner avoiding low-voltage work, or anyone focused on seeing packages at the doorstep, the E340 is the strongest battery-oriented alternative. Confirm the exact power, mounting, and local-storage configuration for the version sold in your market.

Best for Apple Home: Aqara Video Doorbell G4

The Aqara Video Doorbell G4 is the specialist choice for an Apple-centered smart home. It supports HomeKit, offers local AI facial recognition, and has a 162-degree field of view. Its video resolution is 1080p, so it gives up detail compared with the 5MP Reolink models, but its Apple integration and local recognition features make it distinctive.

The indoor chime provides the local recording location. Aqara lists support for microSD cards up to 512GB, and the product includes seven days of free event-cloud storage. The microSD card is purchased separately, so a buyer choosing this doorbell for local recording should budget for a compatible high-endurance microSD card and verify the exact capacity limit before ordering.

The critical Aqara limitation

The G4 can operate on battery power for ordinary event-based use, but 24/7 recording requires wired power. That difference matters: a battery installation should not be presented as a continuous recorder. If the goal is round-the-clock local footage, plan the wired installation during construction or renovation.

HomeKit Secure Video support also does not automatically mean that all recording is included at no additional cost. Apple’s requirements and any third-party cloud-storage plan are separate from the doorbell’s local microSD capability. Buyers should decide whether they want local chime storage, Apple’s recording workflow, Aqara’s included event cloud, or some combination before purchase.

Best for Ethernet infrastructure: Reolink Video Doorbell PoE

The Reolink Video Doorbell PoE is the rational long-term choice for a new build, major remodel, or property that already has Ethernet cabling near the entry. Power over Ethernet carries both data and power through one Ethernet connection, reducing dependence on WiFi for the doorbell’s network connection.

Reolink lists 5MP or 2K-plus video, person detection, a bundled chime, and local recording options without a required subscription. For a construction project, the main advantage is not just image resolution. It is the ability to plan the cable route, PoE equipment, network location, and service access before the walls are finished.

What PoE changes

  • Installation is more involved: You need a suitable Ethernet run and a compatible PoE switch or injector. A standard existing doorbell wire is not a substitute for the required network connection.
  • WiFi coverage is less central: The doorbell uses the wired network path, though the rest of the system still needs a properly configured home network for remote access.
  • It is easier to plan during construction: Leave an accessible cable path and confirm the planned termination location with the installer before drywall or exterior finishes are completed.
  • Local recording remains the key cost advantage: Footage can be retained through the supported local-storage options rather than a mandatory camera-cloud plan.

The PoE model is a better fit than the WiFi model when reliability and infrastructure matter more than a quick replacement of an existing doorbell. It is a poor fit when running Ethernet would require disproportionate demolition or exterior work.

Best premium local-processing system: UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro

The UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro is not the best default purchase, but it is compelling for an existing UniFi Protect household. Ubiquiti lists a premium design with an integrated display, a package-detection camera, AI event detections, two-way audio, and WiFi or PoE connectivity. The U.S. store listed it at $299 in the research snapshot.

Rank #2
REOLINK Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) 2K 4MP Wireless Outdoor Camera | No Subscription Local Storage, 150°x150° Head-to-Toe View, Two-Way Talk, Person/Vehicle/Package Detection(Chime not Included)
  • Long-Lasting Protection, Less Charging Hassle - Install it wire-free for flexible placement and get up to 10 months of battery life on a single charge*, or connect to 8-24VAC wiring to help keep the battery topped up and minimize maintenance. *Based on 5 minutes of recording per day.
  • 2K 4MP Ultra HD Head-to-Toe View - The Reolink Battery Video Doorbell Camera delivers 4MP (2048×2048) resolution with a 1:1 Head-to-Toe view (150°×150°×180°), showing more from visitors to packages. HDR and night vision ensure clear images day and night.
  • Smart Detection & Instant Alerts - No subscription needed for AI smart detection of people, vehicles, animals, and packages. Receive real-time image alerts via the app, with up to 25 rich notifications per day on the free plan.
  • Dual-Band WiFi & Flexible Storage - Supports 2.4/5GHz WiFi for stable connection. Local storage without subscription includes Reolink Home Hub, NVRs, FTP, and SD card (up to 512GB), all with encrypted data protection. Reolink Cloud storage is also available.
  • Voice Changer & Preset Messages - Enjoy real-time two-way communication with visitors. Use voice changing to disguise your voice for privacy, or send preset/custom replies. Receive instant video call notifications when someone rings the doorbell.

UniFi Protect is designed around local video and detection processing. Ubiquiti states that Protect processes detections and AI video locally and does not use cloud video backup by default. That avoids a mandatory camera-cloud recording plan, but it does not make the system hardware-free or entirely disconnected from accounts and networks.

Why it is a specialist pick

The doorbell requires an existing UniFi Protect installation or compatible UniFi console. If a buyer has to purchase that console, networking hardware, and the doorbell solely to avoid a monthly camera fee, the initial cost can overwhelm several years of subscription savings. If the household already uses UniFi Protect, however, the marginal cost and setup complexity are much easier to justify.

Choose this model for the ecosystem, local processing, package view, and premium interface—not simply because it has a doorbell camera. Remote access still needs to be configured responsibly, and the buyer should understand where recordings are stored and how backups are handled.

How to tell whether a doorbell is genuinely subscription-free

Do not stop at the phrase no subscription required. Check what remains after the trial ends. A useful test is whether the following functions still work without paying for a cloud recording plan:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Live view: Can you open the camera remotely?
  2. Notifications: Do motion or person alerts continue?
  3. Recording: Does the camera still save events somewhere you control?
  4. Playback: Can you review those saved events later?
  5. Detection: Are useful person, package, or other event detections still available?
  6. Two-way audio: Can you communicate with a visitor?
  7. Remote access: Can you reach locally stored footage when away from home, and what account or network service does that require?

A doorbell that keeps only live view but removes meaningful recording and playback is not a strong answer to a buyer trying to beat subscription price hikes. The storage location matters just as much as the camera hardware.

Local storage options and their trade-offs

MicroSD storage

MicroSD is the least expensive starting point. It keeps footage in the camera or, in Aqara’s case, in the indoor chime. The card is usually a separate purchase, and capacity limits differ by model: the Reolink WiFi specification lists up to 256GB, while Aqara lists support up to 512GB. Do not insert a 512GB card into the Reolink model simply because another doorbell supports that size.

For repeated security-camera writing, a high-endurance card is a sensible category to consider. It is not a guarantee against failure, so important footage should be exported or backed up when appropriate. Local storage also creates a different failure risk: if the camera or chime is removed, damaged, or loses its card, footage stored only there may no longer be available.

A hub or NVR

A hub or NVR moves storage away from the doorbell and can make centralized retention easier. Reolink supports its doorbells through a Reolink NVR or Home Hub, while eufy offers HomeBase expansion for the E340. The trade-off is additional hardware, a higher initial purchase price, and another device that needs power, space, and network access.

Local smart-home recording

UniFi Protect is the clearest example in this group of a local-processing ecosystem. It can reduce reliance on camera-cloud storage, but it is not a free storage method. The console and broader UniFi system are part of the cost calculation.

How much can you avoid paying over three years?

The financial case depends on the subscription that would otherwise be required. Eufy’s product page uses $3.99 per month, or $47.88 per year, as an illustrative cloud-backup comparison. Google’s current Nest page lists Google Home Premium Standard at $10 per month or $100 per year, and Advanced at $20 per month or $200 per year.

Illustrative annual plan avoided Three-year arithmetic Amount before tax
$47.88 per year $47.88 × 3 $143.64
$100 per year $100 × 3 $300
$200 per year $200 × 3 $600

These are illustrations, not guaranteed savings. They exclude the doorbell, a microSD card, a HomeBase, NVR or UniFi console, replacement batteries, electricity, installation, network equipment, and any future price changes. A subscription-free doorbell often costs less over time, but the break-even point depends on the complete installation.

Why Nest and Arlo do not make the strict ranking

Google Nest Doorbells

Nest Doorbells can still provide useful functionality without paying for every Google Home Premium feature, but their meaningful recording history is subscription-centered. The wired third-generation Nest Doorbell includes six hours of event previews. Google Home Premium extends event history to 30 or 60 days and unlocks continuous recording on the wired model. The battery model includes three hours of event history and cannot record continuously 24/7.

Rank #3
REOLINK Video Doorbell PoE 2K Wired Outdoor Security Camera with Chime V2 | No Subscription Local Storage, 4:3 Aspect Ratio, 180 Degree Diagonal, 2-Way Talk, Plug & Play, Smart Detection
  • 2K Super HD & 4:3 Aspect Ratio: Enjoy the super wide field of view of 135° (H) x 100° (V) x 180° (D). Find the right position for your doorbell with its 15° wedge kit. Incredible 2K HD, along with advanced HDR, 3D DNR, and distortion correction technologies, provides sharp and detailed images even in low light conditions.
  • Chime V2 Included & Answer the Door Faster: Plug the chime included into any electrical socket in any room and be confidently alerted when visitors "knock". You can choose 1 of its 10 tunes and adjust its volume. You can also preset voice messages or automatic replies for times when you're occupied. Chime Compatibility: Reolink Chime-V2.
  • Easy & Reliable PoE Setup: Finish the installation in minutes with a Power over Ethernet design (power supply NOT included) also with unmatched stability - data transfers with no reliance on spotty signal but with a wired connection. An internet break won't stop it from 24/7 recording. Please note that a third-party NVR is NOT supported. Supports 12-24V AC 50/60Hz, 24V DC power, IEEE802.3af PoE switch/injector, or Reolink PoE NVRs. Additionally, WiFi is NOT supported.
  • Flexible Storage Options & Versatile Software: Reolink software provides lifetime service that requires NO monthly fee. It supports pre-roll recording, which provides valuable 6s footage from before an event is triggered. Recordings can be stored on a microSD card (Max. 512GB, not included), Reolink NVR for built-in 2TB/4TB HDD local storage, or FTP/NAS.
  • Accurate Alerts by Humanoid Detection: You can set it to alert you when a human is detected, ignoring trivial non-human passers-by, and you can set the motion zone to decide where objects’ movements will be detected.

That may be acceptable for someone who wants alerts and occasional short history. It does not meet the strictest interpretation of a subscription-free purchase for someone who expects a durable, searchable recording history after price increases.

Arlo

Arlo should not be described as fully subscription-free when recorded cloud history is part of the requirement. Arlo’s documentation states that cloud recording and Arlo Smart services require a paid subscription after the included trial period. A buyer can use some basic functions without paying, but that is different from retaining the complete recording experience without a plan.

Which model should you choose?

  1. You have standard doorbell wiring and want the simplest high-resolution local setup: Choose the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi.
  2. You can run Ethernet or are building a new home: Choose the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE if the installation cost and network equipment are acceptable.
  3. You need battery power and care about packages: Choose the eufy Video Doorbell E340.
  4. Your household is built around Apple Home: Choose the Aqara Video Doorbell G4, while accepting 1080p video and the fact that 24/7 recording needs wired power.
  5. You already own UniFi Protect hardware: Consider the UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro. If you do not, price the console and network ecosystem before calling it a subscription-saving purchase.

Installation checklist for homeowners and construction projects

  • Confirm the power path: A wired doorbell needs a compatible existing circuit. Check the manufacturer’s requirements before connecting it to an older transformer or asking an installer to reuse existing wiring.
  • Plan Ethernet early: For PoE, decide where the cable will enter, terminate, and connect to the switch or injector before walls and exterior finishes close.
  • Make service accessible: Battery models need a practical way to be removed or recharged. Storage hubs and NVRs need a secure, ventilated location with power and network access.
  • Budget for storage: Reolink and Aqara microSD cards are separate from the doorbell. Select a high-endurance card within the exact documented capacity limit.
  • Check the viewing area: Package visibility may require a different mounting height or angle than face-level visitor detection. Use the manufacturer’s compatible mounting accessories rather than assuming a generic wedge will fit.
  • Decide whether cloud is acceptable: Aqara offers free event-cloud storage, eufy offers local storage with optional HomeBase expansion, Reolink offers local storage alongside optional cloud services, and UniFi Protect is built around local processing but still uses a networked account and remote-access architecture.
  • Plan for backup: Local storage avoids recurring cloud fees, but footage stored in only one card or device is vulnerable to device damage, theft, or storage failure.
  • Review privacy settings: Before installation, identify whether remote access, cloud backup, account sharing, and third-party integrations are enabled. No required subscription does not automatically mean zero third-party cloud exposure.

For electrical work, new cable runs, or uncertain existing wiring, use a qualified electrician or low-voltage professional and follow applicable local requirements. The right doorbell can still be the wrong installation if the power, network, or mounting plan was not resolved first.

Bottom line

Buy the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi for the best overall balance of resolution, local storage, useful alerts, and no mandatory monthly recording fee in a wired home. Choose the eufy Video Doorbell E340 when battery installation and package visibility come first. Choose the Aqara Video Doorbell G4 for Apple Home and local facial recognition, but remember that continuous recording requires wired power. Choose the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE when Ethernet can be installed, especially during construction. Choose the UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro only when its premium features and local Protect ecosystem justify the higher upfront commitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are video doorbells without subscriptions really free to use?

They can be free of mandatory monthly recording fees, but they are not cost-free. You may still need a microSD card, hub, NVR, PoE equipment, replacement battery, compatible transformer, installation, or a paid optional cloud service. The key test is whether recording and playback continue after any trial ends without paying.

Which no-subscription doorbell is best for a renter?

The eufy Video Doorbell E340 is the strongest battery-oriented choice in this comparison. It has dual cameras, 2K video, color night vision, 8GB of built-in storage, and access to notifications, recordings, and playback without a subscription. Confirm the mounting and charging arrangement for the specific installation.

Can the Aqara Video Doorbell G4 record continuously on battery power?

No. Aqara states that 24/7 recording requires wired power. Battery operation is appropriate for ordinary event recording, while continuous recording requires planning a wired installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Google Nest a subscription-free video doorbell?

Not if meaningful recording history is a requirement. Nest can provide live view and limited event history without a paid plan, but the wired third-generation model includes six hours of event previews, the battery model includes three hours, and longer history or continuous recording is tied to Google Home Premium plans.

Does local storage mean the doorbell uses no cloud service?

No. Reolink, eufy, and Aqara support local storage but also offer optional cloud or account-based features. UniFi Protect is designed around local processing and storage, but it still involves a networked account and remote-access architecture. Review cloud, remote-access, backup, and integration settings if minimizing third-party exposure is important.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi for wired homes. Best battery option: eufy Video Doorbell E340. Best Apple Home option: Aqara Video Doorbell G4. Best for Ethernet: Reolink Video Doorbell PoE. Best premium ecosystem: UniFi G4 Doorbell Pro for existing UniFi Protect owners.
