For most U.S. homes, the best rainwater collection barrel is an opaque, screened 50- to 55-gallon barrel with a secure lid, overflow outlet, and standard garden-hose connection. A flat-back design is particularly useful beside a foundation wall or fence. The RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon Flat Back Rain Barrel is a strong feature-based overall choice for that use, while EarthMinded’s RainStation or FlexiFit system is better for homeowners who want an automatic downspout diverter. Decorative and recycled-plastic models can also make sense, but the barrel itself is only one part of a safe, functional collection system.

Before buying, account for the stand, downspout connection, overflow route, mosquito screening, winter storage, local rules, and whether the barrel is intended for ornamental landscaping rather than edible crops or drinking water.

Quick picks

Best for Recommended product or system Why it stands out Important limitation
Most tight-space installations RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon Flat Back Rain Barrel 50-gallon capacity, 19-inch depth, flat-back wall fit, UV-stabilized polyethylene, brass spigot, overflow management, and the option to link barrels. The manufacturer’s specifications establish features, not superior independent performance. A stand and compatible diverter may be separate.
Recycled content and a flat-back form RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon Eco Flat Back Rain Barrel 50 gallons, 100% recycled plastic, screen, hose hookup, dual overflow, linkability, and a space-saving profile. Price, colors, stock, and retailer availability change; confirm the exact configuration before ordering.
Automatic downspout routing EarthMinded RainStation or FlexiFit Diverter system Designed for standard rectangular downspouts, with automatic bypass when the barrel is full and a winter hole cover. The diverter system may not include a barrel. Check downspout dimensions and the package contents.
A custom or replacement-parts project EarthMinded Universal Diverter Kit Includes a diverter, fill hose, seal, winter cover, screws, and hole saws for adding collection to a separate container. It is not a complete rain barrel. The container must be sturdy, watertight, and sealed or lockable.
A visible front-yard installation RTS Newport or planter-style barrels Decorative designs, including a Newport model with a removable lid and stand and a 35-gallon round barrel with a planter. Lower capacity and decorative dimensions may not match a large roof catchment or high watering demand.

Use the comparison and decision guide below to choose the best 50 gallon rain barrel for your roof, yard, climate, and local requirements rather than assuming one model is best everywhere.

1. Best overall for many tight spaces: RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon Flat Back

The RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon Flat Back Rain Barrel is a sensible all-purpose recommendation when a conventional downspout feeds a narrow side yard, fence line, or foundation wall. RTS lists a 50 U.S.-gallon capacity, UV-stabilized polyethylene construction, a 19-inch depth, 34-inch height, and 21-inch width. Its brass spigot, built-in overflow management, and ability to connect multiple barrels cover the core features most homeowners need.

The flat rear surface is the main practical advantage. It can sit closer to a wall than a round barrel, although the installation still needs enough clearance for the downspout connection, overflow fitting, hose, and maintenance access. Measure the complete installation—not just the container—before ordering.

This is a feature-based recommendation, not a claim that RTS has demonstrated laboratory superiority over every competitor. The barrel’s usefulness depends heavily on the quality of the base, the overflow route, and the compatibility of the diverter. A separate rain barrel stand may also be needed to raise the spigot high enough for a watering can.

2. Best recycled-plastic option: RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon Eco Flat Back

The RTS Eco Flat Back has the same useful 50-gallon, wall-friendly format but is listed as being made from 100% recycled plastic. RTS also lists a screen, hose hookup, dual overflow, and the ability to link barrels. It is a good fit for shoppers who value recycled content while still needing a flat-back container for a limited footprint.

#1 Best Overall
RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon ECO Rain Barrel Made with 100% Recycled Plastic, Flat Back Rain Water Collection Barrel, Black
  • 50-Gallon Capacity: Provides ample storage for harvested rainwater, ideal for watering gardens, lawns, and plants.
  • Durable Construction: Made from UV-resistant polyethylene for long-lasting durability and protection from the elements. Made of 100% Recycled plastic.
  • Overflow Valve: Built-in overflow valve for managing excess water and the option to connect multiple barrels for increased storage.
  • Convenient Spigot: Easy-to-use plastic spigot for quick and efficient water retrieval.
  • Low Maintenance: Easy to install and maintain, offering a simple, sustainable solution for homeowners.

Do not choose this model—or any barrel—solely because of its material description. Confirm that the lid closes securely, the screen is intact, the spigot is accessible, and the overflow can be directed away from the building. A recycled-plastic barrel still needs a level, load-bearing base and winterization in freezing climates.

Direct prices and retailer listings are volatile. Treat the Eco model as a value-oriented or recycled-content variant only after checking the current price, seller, shipping cost, color, and included fittings.

3. Best for automatic overflow behavior: EarthMinded RainStation or FlexiFit system

Homeowners who want the downspout to keep working after the barrel fills should consider an EarthMinded RainStation or FlexiFit diverter setup. EarthMinded’s instructions describe a diverter that fits standard rectangular downspouts, sends water through a fill hose to the barrel, and automatically allows excess water to continue through the downspout after the barrel is full. The instructions also describe a winter hole cover that can be used when the system is removed or disconnected.

This is a system recommendation, not necessarily a recommendation for a specific complete barrel. Verify whether the listing includes the barrel, diverter, fill hose, fittings, and winter cover. Measure the downspout and compare it with the diverter’s stated compatibility before purchase. If the kit does not include a barrel, the container must have a sealed or locking lid and be sturdy and watertight.

For homeowners comparing options, a rain barrel diverter kit is most useful when it solves a specific problem: keeping the downspout connected, reducing the chance of uncontrolled overflow, and making seasonal disconnection easier. It is less useful to pay for one without planning where overflow will go.

4. Best for a DIY or replacement-parts project: EarthMinded Universal Diverter Kit

The EarthMinded Universal Diverter Kit is intended for a separate container rather than serving as a complete rain barrel. The documented kit includes the diverter, fill hose, seal, winter cover, screws, and hole saws. That makes it appropriate for a homeowner who already owns a suitable barrel or wants to build a custom collection system.

DIY installation is only a good idea if the container is appropriate for water storage. It should be watertight, structurally sound, opaque or otherwise protected from sunlight, and fully covered. An open-top trash can or decorative container without a secure lid is not a safe unattended installation: it can admit mosquitoes, animals, leaves, and children.

Also verify the hole location, hose path, spigot height, and overflow arrangement before drilling. A diverter kit can simplify the downspout connection, but it cannot compensate for an unstable base or an overflow outlet that discharges beside the foundation.

5. Best for a decorative installation: RTS Newport and planter-style barrels

A rain barrel does not have to look like a utility tank when it will be visible from a porch, walkway, or front yard. RTS lists Newport models with decorative styling, including a removable lid and stand, as well as a 35-gallon round barrel with a planter. These models can be attractive choices for a small garden or a prominent location where appearance matters.

The trade-off is capacity and shape. A 35-gallon barrel fills faster than a 50- or 55-gallon barrel, and a planter-style top may require more care to keep the lid, screen, and drainage arrangement functional. Decorative form should not take priority over a secure cover, mosquito protection, a usable spigot, and a safe overflow route.

What independent testing can—and cannot—tell you

A 2026 Bob Vila review reported hands-on testing of several rain barrels. It named the RTS Home Accents 50-Gallon Flat Back as its best overall pick, the FCMP Outdoor Raincatcher 4000 as runner-up, the FreeGarden Rain 55-Gallon as a value pick, and EarthMinded’s 45-gallon planter barrel as its best-with-diverter selection.

That information is useful as secondary comparative context, but it should not be confused with manufacturer specifications or with testing performed for this article. Comparative reviews can help identify differences in setup, usability, and design, while the manufacturer remains the appropriate source for current dimensions, included parts, warranty terms, and model compatibility. Check the exact model and current listing because product variations and availability change.

How much capacity do you actually need?

Most residential rain barrels hold about 50 to 55 gallons. That is a practical starting point for a typical garden, but it is not a measure of how much water your roof can produce. Use this approximate runoff estimate:

rainfall in inches × roof area in square feet × 0.6 = approximate gallons of runoff

For example, one inch of rain falling on 1,000 square feet of roof area can produce approximately 600 gallons of runoff. A single 50-gallon barrel could therefore fill quickly, even during a modest storm. The estimate is approximate and the amount reaching a particular downspout will vary with roof layout, losses, screens, and the collection point.

The practical conclusion is not that every homeowner needs a 600-gallon tank. It is that every installation needs an overflow plan. Use the water between storms, connect compatible barrels with a link kit when additional storage is justified, or choose a larger system where local rules and available space permit it. Multiple barrels also increase the weight and the consequences of a poor base or failed overflow connection.

Buying checklist: the features that matter most

Opaque, UV-resistant construction

Sunlight encourages algae growth. EPA guidance recommends limiting light exposure and preferring opaque materials over translucent or light-colored plastics. UV-stabilized polyethylene is common in residential models; RTS lists that material for the standard flat-back barrel, while its Eco Flat Back is listed as 100% recycled plastic.

Opacity does not eliminate maintenance. Keep the lid closed, clear debris from the screen, and inspect the barrel for cracks, holes, or light leaks. A transparent container is a poor choice for an unattended outdoor system.

A secure lid and fine screen

The opening should be covered with a secure lid and fine mesh screen. The cover keeps out leaves, animals, and children; the screen helps limit mosquitoes and debris. Penn State Extension recommends fine-mesh coverage where local standards do not specify another method, and mosquito-control guidance emphasizes maintaining the screen and water outlet.

Do not buy an open-top container for a residential installation that will be left unattended. If screening is damaged, replace it promptly. If a local authority requires a particular mesh or mosquito-control method, follow that rule rather than relying on a generic product description.

Overflow that moves water away from the house

Overflow is a primary buying criterion, not an optional accessory. When the barrel is full, excess water should discharge toward a suitable planted area, rain garden, or approved drainage point—not against the foundation, basement wall, or neighboring property.

Look for a dedicated overflow outlet, dual overflow arrangement, or a compatible downspout diverter that bypasses water. Confirm the outlet diameter and hose connection, and plan the route before setting the barrel in place. A barrel can be well sealed and still cause drainage trouble if its overflow is aimed at the building.

Spigot position and a properly rated base

Water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon. A full 50-gallon barrel contains roughly 415 pounds of water, before adding the container, stand, and fittings. A 55-gallon barrel holds roughly 456 pounds of water. Place it on a level, stable base designed to support the full load.

A stand raises the spigot, making it easier to fill a watering can and improving gravity-fed access. It does not make an unstable installation safe. Use a stand that is compatible with the chosen barrel, verify that the complete assembly is level, and leave enough room to operate the spigot and hose.

Standard connections and replacement parts

Check whether the barrel has a standard garden-hose connection, how the spigot is attached, and whether screens, seals, overflow fittings, and link connectors are replaceable. Thread sizes and model-specific fittings are not universally interchangeable. Before buying a rain barrel replacement spigot, compare the thread, washer, hose barb, and barrel model; a generic replacement may leak or fail to fit.

Keep a screen and seal inspection on the maintenance schedule as well. A rain barrel screen replacement can be a more useful repair than replacing the entire barrel when the container remains structurally sound.

Winter compatibility

In climates where temperatures fall below freezing, drain and disconnect the barrel before hard freezes. Water expands as it freezes, and freeze-thaw cycles can crack the container or damage fittings. Penn State Extension warns about this risk, and RTS recommends winterizing its barrels in below-freezing conditions.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the barrel and diverter. A diverter with a winter cover can simplify seasonal removal, but it does not eliminate the need to drain the barrel, disconnect hoses when instructed, and prevent trapped water from freezing in fittings.

Installation: a safe sequence for a typical downspout

  1. Check the rules first. Review state, county, city, stormwater, HOA, and landlord requirements. If a rebate is available, check its equipment and installation conditions before purchasing.
  2. Choose the collection point. Position the barrel below a downspout, away from the foundation, and where overflow can reach an appropriate planted or drainage area.
  3. Measure the complete footprint. Record available width, depth, and height, including the stand, lid clearance, diverter, hose, overflow fittings, and access needed for cleaning.
  4. Build a level base. Use a stable platform capable of supporting the full water load. Do not place a full barrel on loose, sloped, deteriorating, or undersized supports.
  5. Install the cover and screen. Make sure the opening is sealed or securely covered before connecting water. Confirm that the screen has no gaps large enough for mosquitoes or debris.
  6. Connect the downspout. Use a compatible diverter or the manufacturer-approved routing method. For an EarthMinded system, verify that the downspout is the standard rectangular type and that the kit’s dimensions match it.
  7. Route overflow deliberately. Attach the overflow hose or fitting and direct water away from the foundation. If using linked barrels, verify how the final barrel handles overflow.
  8. Test during the first rain. Inspect the fill connection, spigot, barrel seams, stand, and overflow route. Correct leaks and pooling before leaving the system unattended.
  9. Maintain the system. Remove leaves and debris, inspect the lid and screen, check the outlet for clogging, and look for cracks or other damage.
  10. Winterize where necessary. Empty, drain, and disconnect the barrel and associated hoses before freezing weather, following the product instructions.

What can you use rain-barrel water for?

Ordinary residential rain-barrel water is non-potable. Do not drink it, use it for cooking, connect it to indoor plumbing, or market it as household drinking-water storage. EPA guidance explains that roof runoff can collect bacteria from birds and animals as well as chemicals from roofing materials.

Appropriate uses generally include ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, lawns, and other outdoor tasks for which untreated water is suitable. UMN Extension advises that rain-barrel water generally should not be used to irrigate or wash edible plants. Avoid applying untreated water to produce that will be eaten unless your local extension or public-health guidance specifically provides a safe, treated method.

Potable or indoor rainwater systems are a different category. They may require filtration, disinfection, backflow protection, plumbing controls, permits, and ongoing testing. A passive backyard barrel is not a substitute for that engineered system.

Rules vary by location

There is no single nationwide rule that makes every rainwater collection setup legal. EPA materials advise checking local ordinances, and state and local codes can treat collection methods, storage capacity, plumbing connections, and permitted uses differently.

Colorado illustrates why broad claims are risky. The Colorado Division of Water Resources currently describes residential collection under conditions that include no permit for up to two rain barrels with a combined capacity of 110 gallons, collection from qualifying residential rooftops, sealable lids, outdoor use on the property, and no drinking or indoor household use. That description should not be generalized to other states, counties, or cities.

Before installation, check your state, county, city, HOA, landlord, and stormwater requirements—especially if you plan to use multiple linked barrels, install a larger cistern, connect to indoor plumbing, or seek a rebate. Requirements and programs can change, and a 2025 Colorado bill that would have removed certain limitations was postponed indefinitely rather than becoming current law.

Which setup should you buy?

  • Choose the RTS Home Accents Flat Back if you want a conventional 50-gallon barrel that fits close to a wall and has a brass spigot, overflow management, and expansion potential.
  • Choose the RTS Eco Flat Back if recycled plastic is a deciding factor and its current price and included fittings suit your installation.
  • Choose an EarthMinded RainStation or FlexiFit setup if automatic downspout bypass and seasonal diverter removal are more important than buying a single all-in-one barrel.
  • Choose the Universal Diverter Kit if you already have—or are deliberately building—a separate sturdy, watertight container.
  • Choose an RTS Newport or planter-style model if the barrel will be highly visible and a smaller capacity is acceptable.
  • Choose linked or larger storage only after calculating runoff, planning overflow, confirming local rules, and ensuring the base can support the added weight.

At publication time, verify the exact model, dimensions, included stand or diverter, seller, price, shipping, stock, and return terms. A barrel, stand, diverter, link kit, hose, replacement spigot, and replacement screen may all be separate purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gallons should a residential rain barrel hold?

A 50- to 55-gallon barrel is a practical starting point for many homes. Smaller barrels suit balconies, small roof sections, and limited watering needs; larger or linked systems make more sense for larger gardens or frequent rainfall. Use the estimate rainfall in inches × roof area in square feet × 0.6 to understand how quickly a barrel may fill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use rain-barrel water on a vegetable garden?

Ordinary roof-collected rain-barrel water is non-potable and can contain bacteria or chemicals from the roof. Avoid using untreated water on edible plants unless your local extension or public-health authority specifically provides a safe method. It is generally intended for ornamental plants, lawns, shrubs, trees, and similar outdoor uses.

Do I need a stand for a rain barrel?

A stand is not always required, but it raises the spigot so a watering can fits underneath and can improve gravity-fed flow. The stand must be compatible with the barrel and placed on a level base capable of supporting roughly 415 pounds of water for a full 50-gallon barrel, plus the container.

What should I do with a rain barrel in winter?

In freezing climates, empty, drain, and disconnect the barrel before hard freezes. Water can expand and crack the barrel or fittings during freeze-thaw cycles. Follow the barrel and diverter manufacturer’s winterization instructions, including any requirement to install a winter cover.

The Bottom Line

For most space-constrained residential installations, start with a screened, opaque 50-gallon flat-back barrel such as the RTS Home Accents model, add a compatible stand and diverter if needed, and give overflow and winterization as much attention as the container itself. Choose the EarthMinded system for automatic downspout bypass, the RTS Eco model for recycled content, or a decorative RTS model when appearance and a smaller capacity matter more. Whatever you buy, keep the water non-potable, maintain the screen and lid, and verify local rules before installation.
