The best UPS for security cameras is sized for the complete surveillance system—not the cameras alone. For most homes, offices, workshops, warehouses, and construction sites, that means a line-interactive UPS with automatic voltage regulation (AVR), enough watt capacity to keep the normal load below roughly 80%, and a runtime based on the system’s actual power draw. Protect the NVR or DVR, PoE equipment, router, modem or fiber ONT, and any other device required for recording or remote access.

Quick recommendations
| Best for | Recommended model or class | Why | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most home and small-business systems | APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500MS2 | 1,500VA/900W, AVR, LCD, USB-A and USB-C, replaceable battery, and 10 outlets | Potentially oversized for a very small 20–50W system; capacity does not guarantee long runtime |
| Compact PoE/NVR installation | Eaton/Tripp Lite SMART750PSRTNC | 750VA/475W, line-interactive, pure sine wave, LCD, and cloud-connected monitoring | Published full-load runtime is short and no extended-runtime support is listed |
| Larger tower installation | Eaton/Tripp Lite SMART1000PSRTNC | 1,000VA/750W, pure sine wave, LCD, and remote monitoring | Its 1,000VA rating is not a runtime guarantee |
| Higher-load small-business system | Eaton/Tripp Lite SMART1500PSRTNC | 1,500VA/1,050W, pure sine wave, LCD, and remote monitoring | Choose it for watt capacity and features, not simply because the VA number is higher |
| Long outages or rack installations | Extended-runtime Eaton/Tripp Lite SmartPro or SmartOnline systems | External battery options can support commercial surveillance loads for substantially longer | More expensive, heavy, noisy, and installation-intensive |
These are specification-based recommendations, not claims of independent hands-on testing. The right choice depends on measured load, required runtime, topology, and installation conditions.
What a UPS does—and does not do
A UPS keeps connected equipment powered when utility power fails. It also helps ride through brief power blips, corrects some overvoltage and undervoltage conditions when AVR is present, and can give an NVR time to shut down cleanly. With appropriate monitoring, it may send outage and low-battery alerts.
#1 Best Overall
- Stable and Dependable: This uninterruptible power supply adapter ensures continuous running of your devices, featuring a wide voltage input and stable output for broad compatibility and versatile applications
- Large Capacity: The UPS has a battery capacity of 2600mAh, with the runtime varying based on different devices usage. It provides uninterrupted power supply, allowing you to keep working or playing without interruption
- Intelligent Power Management: The built in battery enters sleep mode once fully charged and activates during power outages. This intelligent system maintains normal device function without requiring a restart, enhancing overall efficiency
- Compatibility: This UPS power supply is suitable for routers, fish tanks, LED light strips, CCTV cameras, web cameras, LED panels, amplifiers, modems, car DVRs, speakers, card readers, mobile phones, and other devices
- Simple to Operate: Supporting 2A devices, simply plug the UPS power supply adapter into a wall outlet, connect our UPS battery, and then plug in your device, is straightforward and convenient to operate
A UPS does not guarantee uninterrupted surveillance. Cameras can still stop recording because of an unprotected PoE switch, a failed camera or cable, full or corrupted storage, an NVR shutdown, an internet-provider outage, or a cloud-service failure. A UPS also does not make a system cybersecure.
Protect the complete camera power path
PoE NVR system
- Connect the NVR to a battery-backed UPS outlet.
- Connect the PoE switch too, unless the NVR itself powers the cameras.
- Protect the router, modem or fiber ONT, and required wireless access point.
If the PoE switch loses power, the cameras lose both network connectivity and power even if the NVR remains online. For more background, see CyberPower’s surveillance power guidance.
Analog DVR system
Protect the DVR, camera power supply, and router/modem if remote access matters. Put the monitor on battery backup only if local viewing during an outage is necessary.

Protect the camera hubs or adapters, router, modem or ONT, wireless access point, and any local storage appliance. The cameras may remain powered while remote viewing still fails if the provider’s upstream service or cloud platform is unavailable.
How to size a UPS correctly
Camera count is not a sizing method. Power varies with camera resolution, infrared illumination, heaters, pan/tilt motors, microphones, analytics, weatherproofing, hard drives, and PoE-switch efficiency.
- List every device that must remain online.
- Read each device’s wattage specification.
- Measure the real operating draw with a plug-in power meter where practical.
- Include nighttime, startup, and worst-case PoE demand.
- Choose a UPS whose watt rating comfortably exceeds the total load.
- Leave capacity for battery aging, future cameras, and accessories.
A practical target is to run the UPS at approximately 50–70% of its watt capacity and avoid designing above about 80%. Eaton recommends leaving this headroom rather than operating at the maximum rating; see its desktop UPS buying guide.
| Illustrative system | Approximate planning class | Typical UPS class |
|---|---|---|
| Small DVR/NVR and four cameras | 40–100W | 600–750VA |
| NVR, PoE switch, and eight cameras | 80–180W | 750–1,000VA |
| NVR, PoE switch, router/ONT, and 12–16 cameras | 150–300W | 1,000–1,500VA |
| Rack NVR, PoE switching, networking, and many cameras | 300W+ | 1,500VA or rack UPS after precise calculation |
These figures are planning examples only. Use the equipment’s actual specifications, especially for outdoor construction-site cameras that increase consumption at night or in cold weather.
VA versus watts
VA is apparent-power capacity. Watts are real power consumption. A UPS must satisfy both ratings, but the watt rating is often the more useful constraint for an NVR and PoE system.
Neither VA nor the UPS label tells you the runtime by itself. Runtime depends mainly on battery energy, inverter efficiency, battery condition, and actual watt load. A 1,500VA UPS running a 400W system can last much less time than the same UPS running a 50W network stack.
How much runtime do you need?
- Brief ride-through: approximately 5–15 minutes.
- Safe shutdown: enough time for the NVR, NAS, or server to shut down cleanly.
- Short business outage: approximately 15–60 minutes.
- Extended surveillance: external batteries, a dedicated DC UPS, generator, or solar-battery system.
Manufacturer runtime figures are measured at specified loads. For example, Eaton’s brochure lists the SMART750PSRTNC at approximately two minutes at full load and eight minutes at half load; the SMART1000PSRTNC is listed at approximately 1.8 minutes at full load and 10 minutes at half load. The SMART1500PSRTNC is listed at approximately 2.5 minutes at full load and eight minutes at half load. See the manufacturer’s brochure and select the figure closest to your measured load.
Do not expect several hours from an ordinary desktop UPS. For 400W or 800W surveillance loads, Eaton’s security-system examples show that long runtimes generally require larger UPS systems and external battery packs.

Line-interactive UPS
This is the best default for most camera systems. AVR corrects moderate under- and overvoltage without using the battery, making line-interactive models useful in buildings with brownouts or inconsistent power. Eaton explains the distinction in its UPS buying guide.
Online double-conversion UPS
Choose online technology for poor-quality power, sensitive servers and network closets, or critical commercial surveillance rooms requiring continuous power conditioning. The trade-offs are higher cost, more heat, fan noise, and potentially lower efficiency. It is usually excessive for a small home NVR.
Is pure sine wave necessary?
Not every camera or NVR requires pure sine wave output. Many power supplies operate successfully on less expensive simulated or stepped-sine-wave UPSs. However, pure sine wave is a sensible choice for NVRs with active-PFC power supplies, servers, NAS devices, mixed IT equipment, or expensive commercial installations.
The cited Eaton/Tripp Lite SMART750PSRTNC, SMART1000PSRTNC, and SMART1500PSRTNC models specify pure sine wave output while operating on battery. Verify compatibility with the exact NVR and power supply rather than treating the waveform as a universal requirement.
Monitoring and automatic shutdown
Useful features include USB communication, network-management cards, web or mobile monitoring, email or push alerts, runtime estimates, event logs, scheduled testing, replaceable batteries, and configurable low-battery shutdown.
USB is valuable when the NVR, NAS, or server supports UPS shutdown commands. A network card is more useful at an unattended site or where several devices need centralized monitoring. Eaton’s cloud-connected range supports web and mobile status monitoring and battery alerts; its network-management guidance also covers HTTPS, SNMP, and email alerts.
Do not assume that every NVR supports automatic shutdown. Confirm the exact model’s USB compatibility, operating-system support, UPS protocol, and shutdown settings. If the recorder cannot communicate with the UPS, use a conservative runtime alarm and a documented manual shutdown policy.

Product details
APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500MS2: best general-purpose choice
The official APC specification lists 1,500VA/900W capacity, 120V operation, AVR, 10 NEMA 5-15R outlets, an LCD, USB-A and USB-C ports, and a user-replaceable battery.
It is a strong fit for a typical home or small-business NVR, PoE switch, router, and ONT when the measured load is comfortably below 900W. Its main drawback is that it may be more UPS than a tiny camera system needs. It also should not be selected on capacity alone when the goal is multi-hour runtime.
Eaton/Tripp Lite SMART750PSRTNC: best compact managed option
This line-interactive tower is listed at 750VA/475W with eight NEMA 5-15R outlets, an LCD, a lead-acid battery, pure sine wave battery output, and cloud-connected monitoring.
It suits a modest NVR, PoE switch, and network stack. Its published runtime falls quickly at high loads, and the cited brochure does not list extended-runtime battery support, so it is not the natural choice for prolonged outages.

- [Uninterrupted Power During Outages] -- During a power outage, our UPS will automatically switch to backup power to prevent equipment shutdown. 6000mAh battery provides up to 5 hours runtime (varies by device)
- [1 USB + 4 DC Output Ports] -- The mini uninterruptible power supply features multiple output ports: 1 USB 5V/2A, 1 DC 5V/2A, 1 DC 9V/2A, and 2 DC 12V/2A ports
- [Stable & Secure] -- The mini UPS features built-in intelligent safety protection mechanisms, including short-circuit protection, overcharge and over-discharge protection, and temperature control, ensuring safe and stable operation of your equipment when connected to the UPS
- [Easy to Use & Space Saving] -- The mini UPS is plug-and-play and easy to operate. Measuring only 4.72 x 3.54 x 0.98 inches, it takes up very little space
- [Wide Application] -- The mini ups battery backup is designed specifically for power outages and is compatible with a wide range of devices, including routers, modems, security cameras, smartphones, fax machines, fingerprint scanners and DSL equipment (not for AC devices)
It is appropriate when a system is larger than a basic home installation but does not require rack hardware. Its approximately 1.8-minute full-load and 10-minute half-load figures demonstrate why watt load matters more than the 1,000VA label.
Eaton/Tripp Lite SMART1500PSRTNC: higher-capacity tower option
This model is listed at 1,500VA/1,050W with 10 outlets, pure sine wave battery output, LCD status, lead-acid batteries, and remote monitoring.
It fits higher-load prosumer and small-business systems. The cited brochure lists approximately 2.5 minutes at full load and eight minutes at half load, so a larger VA rating does not automatically produce proportionally longer runtime.
Extended-runtime and rack UPS systems
For remote construction sites, warehouses, network closets, and commercial facilities where recording must continue through a prolonged outage, consider an Eaton/Tripp Lite SmartPro or SmartOnline configuration with compatible external battery packs. These systems are more appropriate than simply buying a larger desktop UPS, but they require more space, ventilation, battery maintenance, and installation planning.
Installation and commissioning checklist
- Plug the UPS directly into a properly grounded wall outlet.
- Charge it fully according to the specific manual.
- Connect the NVR or DVR, PoE switch or camera power supply, router, ONT, and required access point.
- Confirm that every essential device is connected to a battery-backed outlet, not a surge-only outlet.
- Check the UPS display or software load.
- During a controlled test, disconnect utility power from the UPS.
- Verify that all cameras remain powered and that local recording continues.
- Test remote access and notifications if they are part of the requirement.
- Test the NVR’s automatic shutdown behavior, if supported.
- Restore utility power and confirm automatic recovery.
- Record the observed runtime and retest periodically.
Do not daisy-chain UPS units or overload extension strips. Check outlet spacing because large transformer plugs can block neighboring receptacles. Provide ventilation, support the unit’s weight, and avoid hot attics or unventilated cabinets.
Batteries, maintenance, and total ownership cost
Sealed lead-acid batteries remain common because they are relatively inexpensive, but they are heavy and eventually require replacement. Lithium-ion systems can be lighter and potentially longer-lived, but they typically cost more and require model-specific replacement and safety procedures. External battery systems provide longer runtime at greater cost and physical complexity.
Keep the UPS within its temperature limits, test it periodically, and replace aging batteries before they fail. Replace the entire UPS if its charger, inverter, outlets, or electronics are unreliable; a new battery cannot repair failed UPS electronics. Budget for replacement batteries, management accessories, and installation—not only the original purchase price.
Surge protection for outdoor cameras
A UPS is not a complete lightning-protection system. Outdoor Ethernet and coaxial cables can carry surge energy into a building even when the AC equipment is protected.
For outdoor PoE cameras, consider properly installed PoE surge protectors at building entry points, appropriate coax protection where applicable, and sound grounding and bonding. AC surge protection does not automatically protect Ethernet, and no UPS can guarantee survival from a nearby or direct lightning strike.
What to choose by situation
- Under approximately 100W and short outages: a 600–750VA line-interactive UPS is often adequate.
- Approximately 100–250W with an NVR, PoE switch, router, and ONT: consider a 750–1,500VA line-interactive unit with pure sine wave output or verified compatibility.
- Above approximately 250–300W: calculate carefully and consider a 1,500VA or rack-mounted UPS.
- More than 30–60 minutes required: evaluate external batteries, a DC UPS, generator, or solar-battery system instead of merely increasing desktop UPS size.
- Frequent brownouts: choose line-interactive AVR at minimum.
- Remote or unattended site: prioritize network monitoring and alerts.
- PoE cameras: include every switch or injector in the load calculation.
Bottom line
For most US home and small-business surveillance systems, start with a line-interactive AVR UPS sized from the measured watt load. The APC BR1500MS2 is a strong general-purpose option; Eaton/Tripp Lite’s SMART750PSRTNC, SMART1000PSRTNC, and SMART1500PSRTNC provide compact pure-sine-wave and monitoring-oriented alternatives. For long outages, move beyond ordinary desktop UPSs to external batteries, DC backup, generators, or solar-plus-battery systems.
Most importantly, back up the entire chain: recorder, PoE equipment or camera power supply, router, and modem or ONT. Protecting only the NVR can leave the cameras—or remote access—offline.

Should the PoE switch be connected to the UPS?
Yes. Unless the NVR itself supplies PoE, the switch or injector powers the cameras and must be connected to a battery-backed outlet.
How many cameras can a 1,000VA UPS support?
There is no fixed camera count. Check the UPS watt rating and add the NVR, PoE switch, networking equipment, and worst-case camera draw. The total should remain comfortably below the UPS’s watt capacity.
How long will a UPS run an NVR?
Runtime depends on the complete watt load, battery condition, and model. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart at a measured load; VA alone cannot predict hours of backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs pure sine wave necessary?
Not for every camera system. It is a prudent choice for NVRs with active-PFC supplies, servers, NAS devices, and sensitive mixed IT equipment. Verify the exact equipment’s compatibility.
Can a UPS power outdoor cameras?
Yes, if the UPS powers the camera’s PoE switch, injector, or power supply. Outdoor Ethernet still needs appropriate surge protection and grounding; a UPS alone does not provide complete lightning protection.
Will cameras work if the internet goes down?
Local recording may continue if the cameras, network, and recorder remain powered. Remote viewing, cloud uploads, and internet alerts will not work unless connectivity is restored or a separate failover connection is available.
Can I use a power station instead?
Possibly, but confirm continuous watt capacity, transfer behavior, output waveform, automatic UPS mode, recharge time, and compatibility with the NVR and PoE equipment. A device that cannot transfer quickly may allow cameras or storage to reboot.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How often should I replace the battery?
There is no universal interval. Heat, cycling, storage, and chemistry affect service life. Monitor battery health, test runtime periodically, and replace the battery when capacity or alarms indicate degradation.
Can I connect a monitor to the UPS?
Yes, if local viewing during an outage is essential and the UPS has sufficient watt capacity. Otherwise, leave the monitor on utility power to reserve battery energy for recording, PoE, and networking.
Is a rack UPS better than a tower UPS?
A rack UPS is better for rack-mounted equipment, organized network closets, and installations needing external battery modules or centralized management. A tower UPS is usually simpler and more practical for a home or small office.
How do I know whether my NVR supports automatic shutdown?
Check the exact NVR manual and specifications for USB UPS support, compatible protocols, operating-system requirements, and shutdown settings. Do not assume that a USB port automatically provides UPS control.
