Yes, you can buy an undercounter ice maker that does not need an external drain—but “built-in” alone does not guarantee it. The strongest overall fit in this researched group is the COTLIN IMC25BI for standard-height installations, with up to 25 pounds of manufacturer-rated ice production and 22 pounds of storage. The Summit BIM26H32 is the better full-height and ADA-oriented alternative, while the COTLIN IMC20 is the practical choice for a short cabinet opening.

Every true no-drain model here still needs a potable-water connection, grounded electrical power, ventilation, and service clearance. “Drainless” means no separate floor or sink drain line—not no plumbing, no water, or no maintenance.

This guide focuses on manufacturer-documented no-external-drain machines, not merely built-in ice makers that can be installed under a counter. The specifications below are manufacturer-stated; they are not the result of hands-on testing or independent measurements of noise, energy use, reliability, or ice quality. Confirm the live product page, warranty, seller, installation requirements, and availability before ordering.

Quick verdict: the best no-drain picks

Best for Model Manufacturer-stated output and storage Important fit note
Best overall for frequent entertaining COTLIN IMC25BI Up to 25 lb/day; 22 lb storage 15-inch undercounter crescent-ice model; verify the live dimensions and commercial terms
Best full-height or ADA-oriented option Summit BIM26H32 Up to 25 lb/day; 22 lb storage 31.75 inches high; included taller kickplate raises it to 34 inches

Best compact marine or tight-installation alternative Whynter MIM-14231SS Up to 23 lb/day; 12 lb storage 14 inches wide and 24.5 inches high; designed for built-in marine-vessel applications

If you are comparing a drainless undercounter ice maker, start by measuring the opening and confirming the water and electrical connections—not by choosing the highest advertised pounds-per-day figure.

What “without a drain” actually means

Most residential undercounter ice machines move water continuously. Water is used to form the ice, flush minerals, release the ice during harvest, and deal with melting in the storage bin. As Scotsman’s drain guide explains, a conventional machine can overflow if that water has nowhere to go.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A gravity-drain machine needs a drain point lower than the appliance and a hose that descends continuously. If the available drain is higher than the machine, a pump may be used to move the water upward. That is why “built-in” and “drain-free” are different specifications: a unit can be designed to fit beneath a counter while still requiring a floor drain, sink connection, or separately purchased pump.

A genuine no-drain model is designed to operate without an external drain installation. However, it is not a self-filling appliance that needs no plumbing. The models in this guide still require a potable-water supply and electrical connection. They can also need water removal during manual defrosting, a prolonged power outage, extended shutdown, or unusually humid conditions. COTLIN specifically warns that water can collect in those situations.

In other words, the benefit is eliminating the permanent drain line and the associated gravity slope or pump—not eliminating every possible drop of water from installation and maintenance.

Detailed picks

1. COTLIN IMC25BI: best overall for a standard-height opening

The COTLIN IMC25BI is the most direct match for a buyer who wants the largest researched output without plumbing an external drain. COTLIN’s comparison material identifies it as a 15-inch drainless crescent-ice machine producing up to 25 pounds per day and storing up to 22 pounds. That combination makes it the strongest fit for frequent entertaining among these candidates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important qualification is that these are manufacturer specifications, not an independent performance test. Actual production depends on conditions such as ambient temperature and water temperature or quality. The bin’s 22-pound capacity is also storage, not necessarily the amount of ice the machine can produce in a single uninterrupted cycle.

Use the manufacturer’s COTLIN drainless ice makers comparison to confirm the current IMC25BI listing, dimensions, price, shipping, warranty, and service arrangements. The researched material establishes the model’s no-external-drain positioning, but commercial details should be rechecked before purchase.

  • Choose it if: you have a standard-height 15-inch-class opening and regularly need more ice than a compact machine can store.
  • Check first: exact cabinet height, depth, front ventilation, door swing, bin-removal path, warranty coverage, and local service availability.
  • Do not assume: the 25-pound rating will be reached under every kitchen condition.

2. Summit BIM26H32: best full-height and ADA-oriented alternative

Summit identifies the BIM26H32 as a 15-inch-wide, drain-free undercounter ice maker with an internal-pump/no-drain design. It is rated for up to 25 pounds of crescent ice per day and stores up to 22 pounds. The cabinet is 31.75 inches high, and Summit includes a taller kickplate that raises the unit to 34 inches. It also has a reversible door, front-breathing built-in capability, and indoor/outdoor use within Summit’s stated limitations.

  • 【Easy Installation】This drainless ice maker adopts advanced drainage-free design, completely bid farewell to cumbersome drainage pipe installation, no need to hire a plumber to install it, you only need to connect the water supply connector and power cord to start normal use. The size design of 14.9"W x 18.6"D x 33.8"H can be easily placed under most standard kitchen counters.
  • 【Quality Assurance】Each built-in ice maker has passed ETL certification and meets strict ETL safety and quality certification standards, ensuring that our ice makers meet the highest industry standards in terms of safety and reliability. COTLIN also provides lifetime service support, so you can choose and use this ice maker with confidence.

This is the better choice when the opening is nearly 32 inches high, when door reversal matters, or when the buyer specifically wants the Summit specification package. It is described as ADA-oriented, but the completed installation still has to meet the applicable counter, clearance, electrical, and accessibility requirements for the project.

Availability is the major warning. At the August 12, 2026 research check, Summit’s product page showed the BIM26H32 as out of stock with an estimated availability date of August 31, 2026. That is a live inventory statement, not a guarantee; check the Summit BIM26H32 listing before designing around it.

  • Choose it if: you need a full-height, reversible-door, front-breathing appliance and can accommodate its height.
  • Check first: stock timing, the manufacturer’s indoor/outdoor limitations, manual-defrost requirements, and the water connection.
  • Trade-off: its availability may make it unsuitable for an immediate remodel.

3. COTLIN IMC20: best for short openings and lighter demand

The COTLIN IMC20 is the most useful option when a conventional undercounter machine is simply too tall. COTLIN lists it at 24.8 inches high, 14.9 inches wide, and 17 inches deep. It is rated for up to 15 pounds of crescent ice per day and stores up to 12 pounds.

COTLIN explicitly positions the IMC20 as requiring no external drain line or separate drain pump. It still requires potable water and a grounded electrical outlet. Its compact dimensions make it relevant for short cabinets, secondary bars, offices, RV projects, and other locations where a taller machine will not fit.

The smaller bin and lower daily output are meaningful limitations. It is a sensible match for modest daily demand, but it is not the first choice for a large gathering or a household that wants a deep reserve of ice. Confirm the full installation clearances, front-venting requirements, water connection, and door-swing space rather than treating the listed cabinet dimensions as the entire installation envelope.

  • Choose it if: cabinet height is the primary constraint.
  • Check first: whether 12 pounds of storage meets your peak demand and whether the installation has enough room to remove the bin and service the machine.
  • Remember: “drainless” does not mean no water to remove during manual defrosting, outages, shutdowns, or humid conditions.

4. COTLIN IMC22: best middle-ground capacity and height

The COTLIN IMC22 fills the gap between the compact IMC20 and the higher-output IMC25BI. COTLIN’s comparison identifies it as a drainless crescent-ice model rated for up to 22 pounds per day with 22 pounds of storage, while targeting a lower-profile opening than a standard-height machine.

This is the most attractive specification compromise for a buyer who wants near-full-size storage but cannot use a full-height unit. The model name should not be used to infer its cabinet height. Confirm the exact live dimensions, required clearances, ventilation arrangement, door swing, warranty, and availability before ordering or building cabinetry around it.

  • Choose it if: the IMC20 is too limited but the IMC25BI or Summit is too tall.
  • Check first: the exact height on the current model page and the available service space behind or beside the appliance.

5. Whynter MIM-14231SS: best compact marine or tight-installation alternative

Whynter’s product information and manual describe the MIM-14231SS as a front-venting built-in or freestanding machine that requires no drain installation. The manual lists up to 23 pounds of crescent ice per day, 12 pounds of storage, a 14-inch width, a 24.5-inch height, a reversible door, manual defrost, and 115-volt electrical service.

Its marine-vessel design context is important. It makes the model relevant to boat, RV, and compact built-in projects, but it is not evidence that the machine can be installed in every outdoor location. Follow the Whynter MIM-14231SS manual for ventilation, water, electrical, operating-temperature, and service-access requirements.

  • Choose it if: you need a narrow, short machine for a tight installation or an appropriate marine project.
  • Check first: the intended environment, temperature range, service access, and only 12 pounds of storage.
  • Trade-off: it has less storage than the 22-pound-capacity COTLIN IMC22, IMC25BI, and Summit models.

Models that should not be called drain-free

Several popular undercounter ice makers are built-in but are not true no-external-drain models. Calling them “without a drain” because they fit under a counter can create an expensive installation mistake.

GE undercounter ice makers

GE’s general undercounter ice-maker guidance says that when a floor drain is unavailable, the buyer needs a drain kit. GE also distinguishes between pump kits by model generation: UPK4 converts the 2022-era UNC15NPRII and UCC15NPRII gravity-drain models, while UPK3 applies to earlier models and is not interchangeable with those newer units. Read GE’s undercounter ice-maker guidance and the exact model documentation before assuming a pump accessory will work.

Whirlpool WUI75X15HB

Whirlpool’s 15-inch clear-ice model requires installation over a drain or use of the separately sold 1901A pump to reach an under-sink drain within 10 feet. That is a pumped-drain installation, not a no-drain installation. It may be a good choice for someone who wants clear ice and has a suitable drain route, but it does not belong in a strict no-external-drain ranking.

Whynter UIM-502SS

The Whynter UIM-502SS residential built-in manual requires access to both a water supply and a drain. It should therefore be excluded from a “no drain required” list even though it can be recessed under a counter.

Why a bar refrigerator is different

GE notes that a refrigerator-style ice maker may not require a drain because the ice remains frozen inside the refrigerated compartment. That is a useful explanation of the underlying distinction, but a bar refrigerator with an icemaker is not automatically equivalent to a high-output standalone undercounter ice maker. Compare the appliance type, storage, production, and installation requirements rather than treating every refrigerator icemaker as a substitute.

How to choose and install a no-drain ice maker

1. Measure the opening, not just the appliance

Measure finished height, width, and depth at several points. The researched compact candidates are approximately 24.5 to 24.8 inches high: the Whynter MIM-14231SS is 24.5 inches and the COTLIN IMC20 is 24.8 inches. The Summit BIM26H32 is 31.75 inches high, or 34 inches with its taller kickplate. Widths are generally in the 14- to 15-inch class, but a nominal “15-inch opening” is not enough information to approve an installation.

Also measure the route for delivery, the door-swing arc, the space needed to pull out the bin, and the clearance required to connect water and power. A unit that fits the empty cabinet can still be impossible to service after the countertop and adjacent cabinets are installed.

2. Plan for a potable-water connection

No external drain does not mean no water line. Summit, COTLIN, and Whynter all document water-supply requirements. Identify the shutoff location, confirm the fitting and tubing specified by the manual, and make sure the line will not be pinched when the appliance is pushed into place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depending on the model and water quality, an ice maker water filter may be useful, but it is not automatically required and must be compatible with the manufacturer’s connection and maintenance instructions. Do not substitute a generic filter or fitting solely because it appears to match the tubing size.

3. Provide the specified electrical supply

COTLIN requires a grounded electrical outlet, and the Whynter manual lists 115-volt service. Use the exact electrical requirements and outlet location in the model manual. Do not use an extension cord in a permanent built-in installation unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it and local code allows it.

4. Keep the ventilation path clear

Front ventilation allows a machine to breathe when installed beneath a counter, but it does not make the grille optional. Keep the intake and exhaust area unobstructed and do not cover the toe-kick or ventilation openings with trim. GE’s built-in appliance ventilation guidance illustrates why the front grille and surrounding clearance matter.

Ventilation is also separate from service access. The installer still needs room to reach the water connection, electrical connection, drainless water-management components, filters if used, and other service points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Plan for maintenance water

Manual defrosting is listed for the Summit BIM26H32 and Whynter MIM-14231SS, and COTLIN warns about water collection during defrosting, power loss, extended shutdown, and humid conditions. Before installation, identify how the manual says to empty or remove that water. Protect finished flooring during service and do not add an improvised permanent drain unless the manufacturer approves the modification.

“No drain” reduces plumbing complexity; it does not eliminate cleaning, mineral management, defrosting, or shutdown procedures. Follow the model-specific cleaning schedule and water-quality instructions rather than assuming the machine is maintenance-free.

6. Treat outdoor and marine claims narrowly

Summit rates the BIM26H32 for indoor/outdoor use within stated limitations. Whynter describes the MIM-14231SS in the context of marine-vessel built-in applications. Neither statement should be expanded into “safe anywhere outdoors.” Outdoor installations introduce temperature, rain, humidity, corrosion, electrical-protection, ventilation, and service-access questions. Use only the manufacturer-approved environment and installation method.

7. Verify the commercial details before cabinetry is finalized

Check the current price, stock status, seller, warranty terms, return policy, parts support, and local service. This is especially important for the COTLIN models, whose current comparison supplies the core specifications but whose commercial terms can change, and for the Summit BIM26H32, which showed an estimated August 31, 2026 availability date at the research check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the opening has no existing water connection or the project requires concealed tubing and a new shutoff, budget for an ice maker installation service or a qualified plumber before ordering the appliance. Removing the drain requirement does not remove the need for safe water and electrical work.

A simple decision framework

  1. Need a machine below roughly 25 inches? Compare the COTLIN IMC20 and Whynter MIM-14231SS. Choose based on the exact opening, storage requirement, and whether the marine-oriented Whynter installation context fits your project.
  2. Need more storage in a lower-profile format? Investigate the COTLIN IMC22, but confirm its current height and complete specifications before cabinet work.
  3. Have a standard-height 15-inch-class opening and entertain often? The COTLIN IMC25BI is the strongest spec-based overall pick, provided its current warranty, service, price, and availability check out.
  4. Want a nearly 32-inch unit with reversible-door and ADA-oriented features? Consider the Summit BIM26H32, while treating its researched stock date as a warning to verify availability first.
  5. Have a drain available and want clear ice? A drain-dependent model such as the Whirlpool WUI75X15HB may be appropriate, but it belongs in a different buying category.

What this comparison does—and does not—prove

The shortlist is based on manufacturer product pages and manuals establishing drain requirements, dimensions, output, storage, and installation positioning. It does not establish which model is quietest, most energy-efficient, most durable, easiest to service, or best at making a particular style of ice. No independent laboratory results or long-term reliability data were available for a defensible ranking on those factors.

  • Advanced & Fast Ice Making: Our commercial under counter ice maker machine can produce 90 lbs of ice in 24 hours, providing 40 clear ice cubes every 11-20 minutes for you and your family. The 24 lb storage container ensures a constant supply of ice, meeting all your daily ice needs for your home, restaurant, bar, or hotel.
  • Compact Design: The built-in design with dimensions of 14.96 x 18.47 x 33.99 inches (including adjustable feet) makes it perfect for any standard height kitchen or bar counter, while also allowing the ice maker to be used as a standalone unit.

The 3-layer housing material ensures longer-lasting ice cubes, preventing them from melting quickly.
  • Smart LCD Control Panel & Customizable Ice Thickness: The multifunctional control panel displays the ambient temperature and allows you to adjust the ice cube size by changing the ice-making time. The 24-hour timer function lets you set the machine to start or stop running at your convenience.
  • Easy-to-Clean & Prolonged Life: The self-cleaning function, activated by pressing the "Timer Clean" button for 5 seconds, helps maintain the ice maker's efficiency and longevity. We recommend cleaning the machine regularly according to usage. The ice maker requires a water supply . Be sure to keep the machine upright for at least 24 hours before using it.

For a construction or remodeling project, fit and serviceability are usually more consequential than a small difference in advertised daily output. A model that technically fits but cannot be ventilated, connected, emptied, or repaired without removing cabinetry is not a successful installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a no-drain undercounter ice maker be installed without any plumbing?

Usually no. “No drain” means the machine does not need a separate external drain line or pump. The researched Summit, COTLIN, and Whynter models still require a potable-water connection and electrical power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are built-in and drain-free ice makers the same thing?

No. Built-in describes how the appliance can be installed in cabinetry. A built-in machine may still require a gravity drain, a pump kit, or an under-sink drain connection. Confirm that the manufacturer explicitly says “no drain required,” “drain-free,” or equivalent.

Which no-drain ice maker is best for a short cabinet?

The COTLIN IMC20 and Whynter MIM-14231SS are the compact-height candidates in this comparison. COTLIN lists the IMC20 at 24.8 inches high, while Whynter lists the MIM-14231SS at 24.5 inches. Confirm the complete installation envelope, not just cabinet height.

Will a no-drain ice maker still have water to remove?

It can. COTLIN specifically notes possible water accumulation during manual defrosting, power loss, extended shutdown, or humid conditions. Follow the model manual for emptying and maintenance; drainless does not mean maintenance-free.

Can these machines be installed outdoors?

Not automatically. Summit documents indoor/outdoor use within stated limitations, while Whynter’s MIM-14231SS is associated with marine-vessel built-in applications. Those descriptions do not authorize every outdoor location. Verify temperature, moisture, electrical, ventilation, corrosion, and service requirements for the exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most buyers who want high output without adding a drain line, the COTLIN IMC25BI is the best specification-based overall choice: up to 25 pounds of ice per day and 22 pounds of storage. Choose the Summit BIM26H32 for a full-height or ADA-oriented installation, the COTLIN IMC20 for a short opening, the COTLIN IMC22 for a lower-profile middle ground, and the Whynter MIM-14231SS for an appropriate compact marine or tight-installation project.

Before purchasing, verify one phrase in the manual and product page: no external drain required. Then confirm height, ventilation, water, electrical service, maintenance access, warranty, service, and live availability. That checklist is what turns a “drainless” product listing into a workable installation.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
