The best under-cabinet ice maker is one that fits the cabinet opening and has the right water, power, drainage and ventilation for the site. Measure the actual opening and check the exact installation guide before choosing by pounds per day: production rate and bin capacity are different specifications, and neither guarantees a full bin at a particular moment.
What to check before choosing an undercounter ice maker
“Under-cabinet” usually means a built-in undercounter appliance. Its body dimensions are not necessarily the same as the cabinet cutout it requires. KitchenAid gives general dimensions of about 15–18 inches wide, 23–24 inches deep and about 35 inches high, while noting that models vary. Use those figures only as a starting point; the exact model’s installation drawing controls.
Measure the opening, not just the appliance
- Measure width, height and depth in several places, and use the tightest measurement.
- Compare those measurements with the model’s required cutout dimensions in its current installation guide.
- Check door swing and clearance, including whether the door can open fully beside nearby cabinets or appliances.
- Allow for leveling and utility connections without blocking the appliance’s specified airflow.

Plan water, power and drainage
These machines need an appropriate water connection, electrical outlet and drain arrangement. Confirm their locations before cabinetry is finalized, then verify routing and requirements in the model’s installation guide. A gravity-drain model depends on a suitable drain location; a model with a built-in pump can move water within the limits in its documentation. The configurations are not interchangeable by assumption.

Check ventilation and intended location
A purpose-built undercounter appliance may be designed to breathe through the front. Summit describes the BIM44G as front-breathing, for example. Do not enclose a freestanding ice maker in cabinetry unless its manual explicitly permits built-in installation and specifies suitable clearances. Nor should indoor/outdoor suitability be inferred from size or appearance: confirm the rating and operating conditions for the exact model.

Compare production rate with bin capacity
A daily production figure describes a rated output over time; the bin figure describes how much ice the appliance can hold. They answer different questions. “Up to” is not a promise of a full bin at a particular time, and the manufacturer specifications below are not independent performance-test results.

For a narrow opening
A 15-inch-wide model may suit a narrow cabinet bay, but nominal width alone is not proof of fit. Compare the BIM44G, KUIX515SBE or JUIFX15HX with the actual cutout drawing, then confirm depth, height, door clearance and utility access. The cited information does not provide every model’s cutout dimensions.
For more rated output or storage
The 18-inch Summit BIM182ADA has the highest cited manufacturer-stated production and bin figures among the Summit examples here: up to 60 lb per day and up to 33 lb stored. Those are not directly comparable to a guarantee of ice on demand, and the wider appliance requires a matching opening.

For cabinetry integration
A panel-ready door can align the appliance with surrounding cabinetry. JennAir’s JUIFX15HX page lists matching door panel kits and a water-line installation kit, but those are model-specific accessories, not universal parts. Check compatibility and current availability before specifying them.

- Choose the exact model. Do not design around a category-wide “15-inch” or “18-inch” label.
