If you watch mainly in a bright living room, the Hisense U8H QLED is a more practical alternative because its mini-LED backlight can deliver higher brightness. For a lower-cost OLED option, the Vizio OLED H1 offered cinematic contrast in a dark room.

Our 2023 recommendations at a glance
| TV | Best for | Technology | Sizes listed in the 2023 guide | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG C2 OLED | Best overall for films | OLED | 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83 inches | Deep blacks, contrast and wide viewing angles | Less bright than the strongest mini-LED sets |
| Hisense U8H | Bright-room and value viewing | QLED with mini-LED backlighting | 55, 65 and 75 inches | High brightness and strong HDR impact | Possible blooming and narrower viewing angles |
| Vizio OLED H1 | Budget OLED film viewing | OLED | 55 and 65 inches | OLED contrast at a lower historical price | Brightness, processing and software compromises |
The “best” choice depends on the room as much as the panel. OLED is generally strongest for films watched at night or in controlled lighting. A good mini-LED LCD can be more satisfying in a sunny room, especially for daytime viewing.
What makes a TV good for films?
Black level and contrast
Film scenes often contain large areas of darkness: night photography, letterbox bars, space scenes and subtly lit interiors. OLED pixels can switch off individually, giving the technology a major advantage in black-level control. This helps dark scenes look cinematic rather than washed out.

LCD televisions, including QLED and mini-LED models, rely on zones behind the screen. Their local-dimming systems can produce excellent contrast, but the result depends on the number of zones and the quality of the dimming algorithm.
HDR brightness
HDR is responsible for the visual impact of sunlight, fire, headlights, explosions and other bright highlights. A brighter TV can make those highlights more convincing, particularly in a room with daylight. However, peak brightness alone does not determine HDR quality. Tone mapping, black levels, colour volume, calibration and highlight detail matter too.
The main formats are:
- HDR10: An open HDR format widely used by 4K discs and streaming services.
- Dolby Vision: A dynamic HDR format used by many streaming services and some discs.
- HDR10+: Another dynamic HDR format supported by some services and manufacturers.
- HLG: A format primarily associated with broadcast HDR.
A format logo does not guarantee a good picture. Confirm support for the exact model, region, internal apps and HDMI sources you intend to use.

Motion handling for 24fps films
Most films are delivered at 24 frames per second. A TV with a 120Hz panel can offer useful motion flexibility and refresh compatibility, but 120Hz does not automatically make film motion natural. Motion interpolation can create the artificial “soap opera” effect, while poor cadence handling can cause judder.
For a film-like presentation, begin with Cinema, Filmmaker, Movie or an equivalent accurate picture mode and reduce or disable motion interpolation. Enthusiasts may prefer a small amount of processing for sports or live television, then switch back for films.
Colour accuracy and film grain
Choose a mode that aims to reproduce the mastered image rather than an exaggerated showroom picture. Excessive sharpening can make film grain look harsh and can accentuate compression artefacts. Dynamic contrast and vivid colour modes may look impressive for a few minutes but can obscure the director’s intended balance.

Upscaling
Good processing matters if you watch DVDs, Blu-ray discs, cable broadcasts, older films or lower-bitrate streams. A TV must enlarge the source without making edges look jagged or noise appear excessive. Upscaling quality varies significantly between models, so do not judge a television only by its panel technology.
Reflections and viewing angle
Direct sunlight and room reflections can make blacks appear grey and reduce perceived contrast. OLED’s contrast advantage is easiest to appreciate in a controlled room. In a bright living room, a high-brightness mini-LED may produce a more satisfying image even if its darkest scenes show some blooming.
OLED panels generally retain their picture quality better when viewed off-centre. That is useful when several seats are spread across a room. LCD viewing-angle performance varies by panel design and model.
Audio connectivity
Even an excellent picture can feel underwhelming if dialogue is unclear or the built-in speakers lack scale. eARC can send higher-bandwidth audio from a compatible TV to a soundbar or AV receiver, including formats such as Dolby Atmos where the complete equipment chain supports them. ARC and optical output are more limited.
Check whether the TV passes audio from its internal streaming apps, whether the required HDMI input supports your source’s features, and whether your receiver or soundbar supports the same formats. An eARC port alone does not guarantee that every combination of device, cable and audio format will work identically.
Best overall for films: LG C2 OLED
The LG C2 was the strongest all-round film recommendation in the 2023 guide. Its OLED panel provides pixel-level light control, near-perfect blacks and strong contrast—qualities that are especially valuable in dark scenes. Its wide viewing angles also suit a living room where viewers do not sit directly in front of the screen.

- HI - QLED MINILED: Striking contrast and vivid, lifelike color put every scene in a new light. Whether it's a sunny landscape or a candlelit drama, the picture leaps off the screen. Mini-LED backlighting uses hundreds of precise light zones to enhance contrast across the screen. Paired with Hi-QLED technology, every color comes through with stunning depth and accuracy
- NATIVE 144HZ REFRESH RATE: Fast breaks, high-speed chases, live finales — every frame stays crisp and fluid, so the action is always exactly where you need it to be. Native 144Hz refresh performance keeps movement fast and sharp, reducing blur during gameplay and live sports. The quick response helps you stay in control during competitive gaming while making rapid camera shots in shows and movies easier to follow
- BUILT-IN SUBWOOFER: Immersive deep bass from the built-in subwoofer pulls you into the heart of the moment, from the rumble of an explosion to the thump of your favorite song. Feel like you’re a part of the action
- ANTI-REFLECTION & GLARE-FREE: Bright rooms are no match for this screen. The anti-reflection and glare-free display keeps your view clean and distraction-free, so you stay focused on what matters — the show
- UNIBODY SLIM DESIGN: Edge-to-edge display and a seamless design that disappears into your room — so all you see is the picture
The 2023 guide listed 4K Ultra HD resolution of 3840 × 2160, a 120Hz refresh rate, a WOLED panel and HDMI 2.1 connectivity. It also highlighted HDR suitability, VRR, fast response and low input lag. Those features make the C2 versatile for gaming and general viewing, although film performance is the reason to choose it here.
Its main limitation is brightness relative to brighter mini-LED LCD televisions. In a room with strong daylight or direct reflections, the image may look less forceful than a high-brightness LCD. OLED also requires sensible consideration of static content: prolonged, repeated display of fixed logos, news tickers or game interfaces can create image retention or permanent panel wear. That risk is usage-dependent, not an inevitable outcome.
Because the C2 is a 2023-era recommendation, treat remaining units carefully. A new, discounted set with a full manufacturer warranty may still be attractive, while open-box, refurbished and used examples need separate checks for panel condition, return rights and support.

Best bright-room and value alternative: Hisense U8H
The Hisense U8H was positioned as the next-best option for viewers who wanted a brighter display or a lower price than an OLED. Its QLED panel and mini-LED backlight can produce strong HDR brightness and contrast, making it a sensible choice for a living room with windows or for households that watch films and sports during the day.
The 2023 guide listed 4K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR support, VRR and mini-LED backlighting. Its strengths are most apparent when bright highlights need to overcome ambient light.
The trade-off is LCD behaviour. Local dimming cannot control each pixel individually, so a bright subtitle or isolated object can produce a halo against a dark background. This is called blooming and is not necessarily a defective panel. Its severity depends on the dimming zones, software, scene content and viewing angle. Blacks can also look less uniform than on OLED, and off-centre viewing may reduce contrast.

The Vizio OLED H1 offered the fundamental OLED advantage—strong contrast and deep blacks—at a lower historical price. That made it appealing for film viewers whose room could be darkened and whose priority was cinematic picture quality rather than maximum brightness.
The 2023 guide listed 55- and 65-inch versions, 4K Ultra HD resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, a WOLED panel and HDMI 2.1 connectivity. However, a lower-cost OLED can involve compromises in brightness, processing, smart-TV software, sound and long-term support.
In 2026, a discounted newer OLED may be a better purchase than an old H1 if the prices are close. Compare the complete package: panel condition, software support, warranty, return policy, HDR behaviour and availability of replacement parts—not just the word “OLED” on the specification sheet.
OLED versus QLED and mini-LED
| Consideration | OLED | QLED/mini-LED LCD |
|---|---|---|
| Black levels | Pixel-level control and exceptionally deep blacks | Can be excellent, but dark areas depend on local dimming |
| HDR brightness | Often less bright across large areas | Often brighter, particularly useful in daylight |
| Blooming | No conventional backlight blooming | Possible around subtitles and isolated highlights |
| Viewing angle | Generally strong off-centre performance | Varies; some models lose contrast off-centre |
| Static content | Repeated static elements can create retention or permanent wear | No OLED-style organic-panel burn-in mechanism |
| Large-screen value | Can cost more at very large sizes | Often offers larger screens at competitive prices |
| Best room | Dark or controlled-lighting cinema room | Bright, mixed-use living room |
Neither technology wins every situation. Choose OLED when shadow detail, contrast and off-centre viewing matter most. Choose mini-LED/QLED when room brightness, full-screen HDR impact, static-content use or maximum size per dollar carries more weight.
Choose by room and viewing habits
- Dark dedicated theatre: OLED is usually the best fit.
- Bedroom or controlled lighting: OLED’s contrast and viewing angles are valuable.
- Bright living room: A good mini-LED/QLED may remain clearer and more impactful during the day.
- Mostly films at night: Prioritise black level, motion cadence and accurate picture modes.
- Frequent sports and daytime TV: Higher-brightness mini-LED may be more versatile.
- Many static news channels or game HUDs: LCD may reduce concern about OLED wear.
- Wide seating arrangement: OLED generally has the advantage.
- Maximum size for the budget: Mini-LED/QLED is often the stronger value.
How to choose the right screen size
Measure the wall, stand, viewing distance and available route into the room. Check the TV’s stand width and depth, mounting pattern, soundbar clearance and the dimensions of doors, stairs and lifts. An 83-inch or 85-inch television may fit the wall but still fail to pass through the building.
Best Value
- PERFECT BLACK AND PERFECT COLOR: Over 8.3 million self-lit smart pixels with Perfect Black and Perfect Color technology.
- A8 AI PROCESSOR 4K GEN3: Enjoy outstanding picture quality, which uses AI to detect what you're watching and automatically improves the picture and sound quality to your personal preferences.
- DOLBY VISION, DOLBY ATMOS AND FILMMAKER MODE: Loaded with Dolby Vision for extraordinary color, contrast and brightness, plus Dolby Atmos for sound you can feel all around you. Land in the center of the action with FILMMAKER MODE with Ambient Light Technology, allowing you to see films just as the director intended.
- ULTIMATE GAMEPLAY: Delivers smooth, responsive gaming with a 0.1ms response time, up to 120Hz refresh rate, NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium and VRR.
- OLED CARE: Helps protect your OLED display to retain the best picture quality possible over time.
Choose size based on seating distance and source quality rather than resolution alone. A larger screen can make low-quality streams, compression and grain more visible, although high-quality 4K films benefit greatly from a cinema-sized image.
How to set up a TV for films
- Select Cinema, Filmmaker, Movie or the manufacturer’s most accurate equivalent.
- Reduce or disable motion interpolation for natural 24fps presentation.
- Use the correct aspect ratio and screen-fit setting, such as Just Scan where the model provides it.
- Configure HDR separately from SDR; the TV may save different settings for each.
- Match HDMI black-level and range settings between the TV and source device.
- Reduce excessive sharpening and dynamic contrast if accuracy is the priority.
- Review energy-saving settings if they materially reduce brightness.
- Connect a compatible soundbar or AV receiver through eARC when high-bandwidth audio passthrough is required.
- Test both internal apps and external playback devices.
- Check dark scenes and subtitles for crushed shadow detail, raised blacks or blooming.
Menu names vary by manufacturer and firmware version, so confirm the exact labels for the model you buy.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing OLED for a room dominated by direct sunlight.
- Assuming “QLED” means OLED-level black control.
- Treating a 120Hz specification as a guarantee of cinematic motion.
- Comparing peak brightness without considering tone mapping and dark-scene performance.
- Ignoring eARC, ARC, receiver compatibility and lip-sync requirements.
- Buying a discontinued model without checking condition, warranty and return rights.
- Assuming every streaming app supports every HDR format.
- Choosing a screen that is too large for the room—or too small for the seating distance.
- Discussing OLED burn-in as inevitable rather than usage-dependent.
Verdict
For the 2023 buying landscape, the LG C2 OLED was the best overall TV for films, particularly in a dark or moderately lit room. The Hisense U8H was the better fit for a bright living room and a buyer prioritising brightness, while the Vizio OLED H1 was the budget OLED choice.
