This routine limits lingering surface moisture, but no towel by itself prevents mold.
Why microfiber is the best shower-drying towel
US EPA and Clorox guidance supports drying shower surfaces with a towel or cloth, with Clorox specifically identifying microfiber for rinsed shower surfaces. Microfiber is a practical cloth type because it can be used on walls, fixtures and tight areas, then wrung out and reused after proper washing and drying.
The evidence does not establish a winning brand, fiber blend, weave, size or absorbency rating. Treat “microfiber” as the supported category rather than proof that a premium model is superior.
Features worth checking when you buy
- Enough surface area: Choose dimensions you can handle comfortably on your walls and fixtures.
- Easy wringing: A cloth that can be wrung out without excessive effort is more practical for a whole shower.
- Hanging loop: A loop or other way to suspend the cloth helps it dry between uses.
- Care instructions: Follow the manufacturer’s washing and drying directions; the cited guidance does not set a universal replacement or washing interval.
- Cost per cloth: Compare the usable number of cloths in a pack rather than assuming a higher price means better drying.
Microfiber cloth versus a shower squeegee
A squeegee is a complementary tool, not a replacement for the towel in areas where water gathers around hardware and edges. EPA and Health Canada guidance allows either a squeegee or towel for shower-wall drying, while Clorox’s instructions and Martha Stewart’s 2026-02-07 article describe a practical split: squeegee broad areas and use microfiber on corners and fixtures.

This combination is a practical routine based on the cited recommendations, not a controlled test proving that it is universally faster or more effective.
A simple shower wipe-down routine
- Remove bulk water. After bathing, draw a shower squeegee down broad smooth walls and glass if you have one. Work toward a drain or another suitable outlet.
- Finish with microfiber. Wipe remaining water from corners, ledges, faucets, handles, door tracks and other places the squeegee misses.
- Dry the cloth. Rinse or wring it as needed, then hang it clean and open so it can dry fully. Do not leave a wet cloth or towel in a laundry basket or washing machine.
- Ventilate the room. Run the bathroom exhaust fan while showering and for at least 30 minutes afterward. Health Canada also advises checking that the fan vents outdoors.
- Inspect the moisture sources. Repair leaks and damaged tile, grout or caulking instead of relying on surface wiping alone.
How towel drying relates to mold prevention
Wiping away water reduces moisture left on shower surfaces, but bathroom mold is linked to excess moisture and inadequate ventilation. EPA guidance says that when mold repeatedly returns in a bathroom, increasing ventilation and cleaning more frequently will usually prevent recurrence or keep it to a minimum.

Keep the cloth routine in perspective:
- Use ventilation and complete drying as well as wiping.
- Fix plumbing leaks and deteriorated grout, caulk or tile that allow water to persist.

- Do not use a towel as mold remediation. Persistent or extensive mold requires addressing the moisture source and may need a more thorough response than a daily wipe-down.
Keeping the towel sanitary and effective
Store the microfiber cloth clean and dry between uses. EPA advice specifically cautions against leaving wet towels in a laundry basket or washing machine. Because the available guidance does not specify a fixed laundering or replacement schedule, wash the cloth according to its care label and replace it when it no longer cleans effectively, dries properly or can be cleaned satisfactorily.
What not to overclaim when choosing a towel
No cited source compares named products or proves that a particular weave, blend or “mold-resistant” finish is best. A product description can help you judge size, care and handling, but it is not evidence of superior mold prevention. The defensible recommendation is a clean, washable microfiber cloth used as part of a broader moisture-control routine.
