The best Toro lawn mower is not the most expensive one. It is the mower that fits your lawn size, terrain, storage space, mowing schedule, and tolerance for maintenance. For most U.S. suburban yards under about 1/3 acre, a 22-inch Toro Recycler, either 60V battery or gas Personal Pace, is the practical value pick. For 1/3 to 1/2 acre, thicker grass, slopes, or homeowners who mulch most of the season, the Super Recycler is the better long-term machine. For 1/2 to 3/4 acre with open runs, the 30-inch TimeMaster can save real time, but it costs much more and needs more room to maneuver.

On our job sites, we look at mowers the same way we look at compact equipment: match the tool to the work. A mower that is perfect for a flat 6,000-square-foot lawn can be frustrating on a sloped 18,000-square-foot lot. A 30-inch deck sounds efficient until it will not fit through a side gate or around tight planting beds. Battery power is quiet and clean, but runtime must be sized for wet spring growth, not a light July trim.

This guide breaks down the main Toro homeowner lines, real 2026 price ranges, gas versus 60V battery tradeoffs, storage and gate measurements, and the situations where a homeowner should step up, step down, or hire help.

Quick Answer: Which Toro Mower Should You Buy?

If your yard is under 1/4 acre and mostly flat, choose a Toro Recycler Push mower or 60V Recycler if you want quieter mowing and less engine maintenance. If your yard is 1/4 to 1/3 acre, a 22-inch Recycler Personal Pace self-propelled mower is usually the best value. If your yard is 1/3 to 1/2 acre, has thicker grass, or you care about clean mulching, choose a Super Recycler. If your yard is 1/2 to 3/4 acre with broad open sections, consider a 30-inch TimeMaster before jumping to a riding mower.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For yards larger than 3/4 acre, especially if the lawn is open and regularly maintained, start comparing riding mowers or zero-turns. Toro TimeCutter zero-turn models are a different category, with 2026 dealer ranges commonly starting around $2,899 and running well above $6,000 depending on the line.

Toro Mower Comparison Table for 2026

Use this table as a first pass. Then measure your actual gates, storage space, slopes, and mowing time before buying.

Model Type Best Yard Size Deck Width Power Source Typical 2026 Price Runtime or Fuel Notes Best Use Case Who Should Skip It
Toro Recycler Push Under 1/4 acre 21-22 in. Gas or 60V battery About $429-$529 Battery versions depend heavily on grass load Small, flat yards and simple storage Owners with hills, thick grass, or mobility concerns
Toro Recycler Personal Pace 1/4-1/3 acre 22 in. Gas or 60V battery Gas about $429-$549; 60V kits about $529-$679 60V self-propel models list up to about 1/3 acre or roughly 53 minutes with an 8.0 Ah battery Typical suburban lawns where value matters Homeowners who mulch heavy grass every week
Toro Super Recycler 1/3-1/2 acre 21 in. Gas or 60V battery Gas about $599-$799; 60V kits about $849-$899 Independent-style field use commonly lands around 30-60 minutes depending on load Cleaner mulching, better finish, frequent mowing Small-lot owners who only need basic cutting
Toro TimeMaster 1/2-3/4 acre 30 in. Gas or 60V battery Gas about $1,399-$1,649; 60V/eTimeMaster kits about $1,599-$2,399 Wider cut saves passes but adds weight and width Large open lawns where a rider is excessive Narrow gates, tight beds, steep slopes, small sheds

Start With Yard Size, Not the Model Name

The biggest buying mistake is starting with the mower instead of the lawn. Walk your yard and estimate the actual mowable area. A 1/2-acre lot does not mean 1/2 acre of grass. House footprint, driveway, patio, pool, beds, trees, and slopes all reduce the cutting area. A suburban lot listed at 10,000 square feet may only have 5,000 to 7,000 square feet of turf.

Under 1/4 Acre

For a small lawn, a basic Recycler is usually enough. A 21- or 22-inch deck gives you a normal residential cutting width without making the mower hard to store. If the yard is flat and you are comfortable pushing, you can save money by skipping self-propel. If the lawn has even mild slope or you want less fatigue in summer heat, self-propel is worth the upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 60V Recycler is especially attractive on small lots. You avoid gasoline storage, oil changes, spark plugs, and exhaust. Noise is lower, which matters in tight neighborhoods, townhomes, and HOA communities with early-morning or evening quiet hours.

One-Quarter to One-Third Acre

This is the sweet spot for the Toro Recycler Personal Pace. The Personal Pace drive responds to your walking speed instead of locking you into a fixed pace. For homeowners who mow after work or on hot weekends, that matters. A current 22-inch gas Recycler Personal Pace electric-start model sits around $489 in national retail examples, while 60V Recycler kits with an 8.0 Ah battery and charger commonly run around $679.

If you bag clippings often, keep an eye on how far you carry the bag and where you dump it. The difference between a 35-minute mow and a 50-minute mow is often not cutting speed; it is stops, turns, bag emptying, toys in the yard, and trimming around beds.

One-Third to One-Half Acre

At this size, the Super Recycler starts making sense. The upgrade is not just a nicer badge. The Super Recycler is built around better clipping processing, cleaner mulching, and premium deck options on some models, including aluminum. If you mulch most of the season, that cleaner processing can mean fewer clumps, less double-cutting, and a better-looking lawn after spring growth surges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect gas Super Recycler models around $599 to $799 in 2026, with dealer listings for current models often around $699 to $749. Toro 60V Super Recycler kits commonly land around $849 to $899, depending on battery package and dealer pricing.

One-Half to Three-Quarter Acre

The TimeMaster uses a 30-inch deck instead of the common 21- or 22-inch walk-behind deck. That extra width can remove many passes on a large open lawn. If you have long straight runs and few obstacles, the time savings can be meaningful.

The tradeoff is cost, storage, and maneuverability. Gas TimeMaster models commonly run about $1,399 to $1,649 in 2026. Battery 30-inch models can range from about $1,599 to $2,399 depending on the kit. The deck is wider, the machine is heavier, and it is less forgiving around narrow gates, tight landscape beds, and uneven transitions.

Gas vs 60V Battery: The Practical Difference

Gas still has a place. If you have thick warm-season grass, a larger lot, or a habit of mowing when the lawn is overdue, a gas Toro can keep going as long as you have fuel and the mower is maintained. Gas also avoids the question of battery degradation over time.

Battery mowers solve a different set of problems. They eliminate gasoline storage, oil changes, exhaust at the operator, and most cold-start frustration. They are also better suited to noise-sensitive neighborhoods. For many homeowners under 1/3 acre, the 60V Recycler is easier to live with than gas, even if the up-front cost is slightly higher.

The catch is runtime. Current Toro 60V Recycler self-propel listings show up to about 1/3 acre or roughly 53 minutes with an 8.0 Ah battery, while some 60V configurations list up to 1/2 acre or about 50 minutes depending on the model and conditions. In real use, runtime changes with grass height, moisture, temperature, blade sharpness, self-propel use, and whether the mower ramps into higher-power cutting. Heavy spring growth can make a battery that felt generous in August feel marginal in April.

Our rule is simple: size battery capacity for your worst mowing week, not your best. If your yard is near the upper limit of a kit, budget for a second battery or choose gas. A second large battery can change the total ownership cost enough that a more expensive mower may not be the whole story.

Recycler vs Super Recycler: When the Upgrade Is Worth It

The Toro Recycler is the value tier. It is a good fit for typical flat-to-moderate suburban lawns, especially when the homeowner wants Personal Pace self-propel without paying premium prices. It can mulch, bag, or side-discharge depending on configuration, and it is the right answer for a lot of households.

The Super Recycler is the upgrade for homeowners who care about cut quality and clipping management. If you mow weekly, mulch regularly, and want fewer clumps after fast growth, this is where the extra money becomes easier to justify. The better mulching system matters most when the grass is healthy and growing quickly. On a thin, dry, small lawn, the difference may not justify another $150 to $300.

Deck material also matters. Some Super Recycler models offer more durable deck construction, including aluminum on certain configurations. A better deck is not just about impact resistance; it is about long-term ownership. If you plan to keep a mower for 8 to 12 years, store it properly, sharpen blades, and service it on schedule, a premium mower can be the cheaper annualized choice.

Storage, Gates, and Yard Layout Can Decide the Purchase

Before buying any mower, measure three things: the narrowest gate, the storage location, and the path from storage to lawn. A 22-inch mower deck still needs handle clearance. A 30-inch TimeMaster may not fit through older side gates, tight shed doors, or narrow garage paths once shelving and bikes are in the way.

SmartStow is useful because it allows certain Toro models to store upright and reduce floor footprint. That helps in small garages, but it does not make the mower narrower. If your shed door is 30 inches clear and the mower is functionally wider than that at the deck or wheels, upright storage will not solve the access problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also look at your landscaping. A wide mower is fastest in open turf and slowest in yards with island beds, trees, playsets, drainage swales, tight fence returns, and curved walkways. On complex yards, a smaller self-propelled mower can finish nearly as fast because it turns and trims more cleanly.

Slopes, Uneven Ground, and Thick Grass

For hills and uneven terrain, traction and control matter more than raw deck width. Rear-wheel drive is usually better on slopes than front-wheel drive because weight shifts back as you climb. Personal Pace is helpful because it lets the mower match your walking speed instead of pulling you into awkward footing.

Do not force a low cut through tall or wet grass. Raise the deck one or two settings, mow more often during fast growth, and keep the blade sharp. A dull blade increases load, tears grass tips, drains battery faster, and leaves a rougher finish. For most lawns, sharpening once or twice per season is reasonable. For sandy soil, heavy use, or lots with sticks and debris, inspect the blade more often.

Wet grass is hard on every mower. It clumps, sticks to the deck, reduces airflow, and makes bagging less efficient. If you must mow slightly damp grass, slow down, raise the deck, and avoid taking off more than one-third of the grass height in a single pass.

What a Toro Mower Really Costs in 2026

The purchase price is only part of the cost. A gas mower needs oil, fuel stabilizer, spark plugs, air filters, occasional belts or cables, and annual service time. A battery mower may need a second battery now or a replacement battery later. Both need blade sharpening, cleaning, and storage care.

For a basic ownership estimate, assume blade sharpening costs $10 to $25 if you remove the blade yourself and take it in, or more if a shop handles the mower. Gas maintenance supplies can easily run $25 to $75 per year depending on what you do yourself. Battery replacement costs vary by capacity and availability, but large 60V packs are expensive enough that they should be part of the buying decision, especially if the mower is near the edge of its runtime rating.

Also ask what the listed price includes. Dealer setup, destination fees, local delivery, assembly, and warranty handling can change the real value. Big-box pricing may be lower, but nearby authorized service can matter more if you have a drive issue, engine problem, or battery warranty claim.

California, Noise Rules, and HOA Considerations

California has moved aggressively toward zero-emission small off-road engines, with updated rules requiring most new small off-road engines to be zero-emission beginning with the 2024 model year. For California homeowners, that makes battery mowers more than a lifestyle choice; it affects what will be available and supported over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even outside California, check local noise ordinances and HOA rules. Some communities restrict mowing before 7 a.m. or 8 a.m., after evening hours, or on certain days. Battery mowers are not silent, but they usually reduce engine noise enough to make scheduling easier. Fuel storage can also matter in townhomes, condos, and attached garages where gasoline cans are discouraged or restricted.

You usually do not need a permit to own or use a lawn mower at a single-family home. The practical exceptions are not building permits; they are HOA covenants, rental rules, fire-code concerns around fuel storage, and local restrictions on commercial landscaping equipment.

When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro

Most homeowners can mow their own lawn safely if the grade is manageable, the mower is properly sized, and they follow basic safety habits. Wear eye protection, closed-toe shoes, and hearing protection for gas mowers. Clear sticks, stones, toys, hoses, and metal edging pieces before mowing. Never pull a running mower backward unless the manual allows it and you have clear footing.

Hire a lawn service or landscape contractor if your yard has steep slopes, drainage ruts, retaining-wall edges, heavy brush, or more lawn than you can maintain on a weekly schedule. A homeowner-grade walk-behind mower is not the right tool for reclaiming overgrown lots, cutting brush, or mowing wet slopes. Professionals also make sense if you travel often during peak growing season; missing two spring mowings can turn a normal lawn into a slow, clumpy cut that strains equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are choosing between a $1,649 TimeMaster and paying a crew, do the math. A weekly mow at $45 to $75 over a 28-week season costs roughly $1,260 to $2,100 per year. If you enjoy the work and have storage space, owning can pay off. If weekends are tight and the yard is complex, hiring may be the better value.

Our Practical Buying Recommendations

For the average homeowner with a lawn under 1/3 acre, buy the Toro Recycler Personal Pace that matches your power preference. Choose gas if you want longer uninterrupted mowing and lower up-front cost. Choose 60V if you value lower noise, no gas storage, and simpler maintenance.

For homeowners who mulch most weeks, have 1/3 to 1/2 acre, or want a cleaner finish, buy the Super Recycler. The extra cost is easier to justify when clipping quality matters and the mower will be used often.

For larger open yards, consider the TimeMaster only after measuring gates and storage. It is a strong fit for broad lawns where a riding mower is excessive, but it is not a shortcut for every suburban property. If your yard is full of tight turns, beds, and narrow passages, a 22-inch self-propelled mower may be the better working tool.

The best Toro lawn mower is the one you will use consistently. Match deck width to layout, battery capacity to worst-case mowing conditions, drive system to terrain, and price to how long you plan to keep the machine. That is how you avoid buying too little mower, too much mower, or the right mower for somebody else’s yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Toro lawn mower is best for a small yard?

For a small yard under 1/4 acre, a Toro Recycler push mower or 60V Recycler is usually the best fit. Choose self-propel if the yard has slope or you want easier handling in summer heat.

Is the Toro Super Recycler worth the extra money?

Yes, if you mow frequently, mulch most of the season, or have thicker grass. The main upgrade is cleaner clipping processing and cut quality, not just premium trim.

Should I buy a gas or 60V battery Toro mower in 2026?

Buy gas for larger lawns, thick grass, and longer uninterrupted mowing. Buy 60V battery for smaller suburban yards, lower noise, no fuel storage, and reduced maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does a Toro lawn mower cost in 2026?

Common Toro Recycler gas mowers run about $429-$549, 60V Recycler kits about $529-$679, Super Recycler models about $599-$899, and 30-inch TimeMaster models about $1,399-$2,399 depending on power source and kit.

Can a Toro 60V mower cut a half-acre yard on one charge?

Some 60V models list up to about 1/2 acre under favorable conditions, but real runtime depends on grass height, moisture, heat, blade sharpness, and self-propel use. For a true half-acre lawn, budget for a second battery or consider gas.

Is the Toro TimeMaster too big for a suburban yard?

It can be too big if the yard has narrow gates, tight beds, many turns, or limited storage. It works best on 1/2- to 3/4-acre lawns with open mowing runs.
