The best basic tool for cleaning a shower is a scrub brush suited to the surface: use it with a cleaner labeled as compatible, then rinse and dry. A cloth or sponge helps with wiping, while a squeegee is an optional way to remove water after use. These tools serve different jobs; none replaces fixing a leak or improving ventilation when moisture and mold keep returning.
Choose a tool for the job
Cleaning combines a suitable cleaner with mechanical action—wiping or scrubbing—to lift ordinary soil. The tool should fit the area and avoid damaging its finish. There is no universally best cloth, sponge, bristle type, or brush model established by the sources cited here.
| Tool | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Shower scrub brush | Scrubbing hard shower surfaces | Choose bristle abrasiveness and reach to suit the surface and task. Test an inconspicuous area if you are unsure whether the brush could scratch or wear the finish. |
| Narrow grout brush | Targeted scrubbing along grout lines | Useful where a broad brush cannot reach easily; it is not necessary for every shower or guaranteed to suit every grout type. |
| Cloth or sponge | Wiping cleaner, rinsing, and cleaning less soiled areas | Pick one compatible with the surface. No cited source establishes one material as universally best. |
| Shower squeegee | Removing surface water after a shower | An optional maintenance convenience, not a substitute for cleaning, ventilation, or mold remediation. |
EPA’s mold-cleanup method for hard surfaces is to scrub with detergent and water, then dry completely. A brush is a straightforward choice for that scrubbing step. When comparing brushes, consider the area you need to clean, surface compatibility, bristle abrasiveness, handle reach, and how easily the tool itself can be cleaned and dried. The cited sources do not provide controlled comparisons of particular tools.
Match the cleaner to the shower surface
Read the product label before use and confirm that the cleaner is labeled for the material you are cleaning. Follow the directions for dilution, application, rinsing, and any precautions. Ventilate while using cleaning products, and never mix products. If an antimicrobial product is needed, follow its label’s required wet contact time.

Routine cleaning, mold cleanup, and disinfection are different
Routine shower cleaning
For ordinary soap residue and dirt, clean with soap or detergent and water, using a brush, cloth, or sponge appropriate to the surface. CDC says cleaning with soap and water is enough in most situations.

Mold on hard surfaces
EPA recommends scrubbing mold from hard surfaces with detergent and water and drying the area completely. If mold returns, repeated scrubbing alone may not solve the problem: address leaks or other sources of moisture. More frequent cleaning and better ventilation may help limit recurring shower mold.
When disinfection is needed
Disinfection is a separate step from routine cleaning. CDC says it is generally needed when someone is sick or someone who is sick has recently visited. Follow the disinfectant label, including its surface directions and wet contact time.

Use a squeegee and ventilation to manage moisture
A squeegee can wipe water from shower surfaces after bathing; the cited recommendation comes from a secondary household cleaning guide, not official comparative testing. It is a convenient maintenance tool, not a treatment for existing mold or a substitute for exhausting humid air.
EPA recommends using a bathroom fan vented outdoors or opening a window during and after a shower to exhaust moisture. If mold keeps recurring, consider both cleaning frequency and whether moisture is being removed effectively, while also correcting leaks or other water problems.

- Increase ventilation when using cleaning products, and follow each product’s label and surface-compatibility directions.
- Never mix cleaning products. CDC’s mold-cleanup guidance is explicit: “You should never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser.”
- For mold cleanup, CDC lists a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, gloves, and goggles. People with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD may be at higher risk from mold exposure and should not take part in mold cleanup. This protective guidance concerns mold cleanup; it does not mean every routine shower wipe-down requires a respirator.
- After cleaning, rinse tools as appropriate and allow them to dry. A tool that stays damp can add to the moisture problem you are trying to manage.
