360 construction cameras

Best Tools for Monitoring Construction Progress and Milestones

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most construction teams, the best setup combines an integrated project platform for schedule and milestone control with disciplined field evidence. Autodesk Forma Build is the strongest fit when imported schedules, Workplan commitments, installation quantities and milestone timelines need to connect. Procore is a strong choice for broad reporting, dashboards, maps, photos and visual-capture workflows. A 360-degree camera adds repeatable walk-through evidence, while drones are most valuable on large, horizontal, remote or difficult-to-access sites.

No tool can make progress “real time” by itself. Reliable monitoring requires a baseline schedule, measurable activities, dated evidence, named owners and a routine for comparing planned work with actual status.

What construction progress monitoring must accomplish

Progress monitoring answers four practical questions: What was supposed to be complete by now? What is actually complete? What evidence supports that status? What must happen next to protect the milestone?

Nicpro Mechanical Carpenter Pencils for Construction (Black, Red) With Case
  • Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
  • Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
  • Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
  • Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
  • Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
  • The control layer: a master schedule, activity dates, quantities, dependencies, commitments and milestone dates.
  • The evidence layer: field status updates, marked-up drawings, inspections, dated photographs, 360-degree walks, drone imagery and written explanations.

When either layer is missing, reports become unreliable. A schedule without evidence can show optimistic percentages that nobody can verify. Photos without a baseline show what a site looked like, but not whether the work is early, late or on the critical path.

Before buying software, define the activities that will be measured. “Electrical work” is too broad for a useful status. “Install 220 of 300 corridor light fixtures on level 3” can be measured by percentage, quantity or object count and tied to a date.

Best tools and methods compared

Tool or method Best fit Evidence and milestone strengths Main limitation or watch-out
Autodesk Forma Build Teams already using Autodesk workflows or needing schedule-to-field linkage Tracks installation by completion percentage, measurement or object count; surfaces data in a dashboard; supports imported schedules, Workplan commitments, Percent Plan Complete and mobile status updates The former Progress Tracking page notes that its legacy beta ended and existing data migrated to Assets in 2023. Confirm the current product path before implementation.
Procore Multi-disciplinary projects that need broad reporting and visual context 360 Reporting dashboards, maps with GPS-tagged photos, and documented workflows involving cameras, drones, BIM, Gantt charts, artificial intelligence and robotics Feature availability and release behavior vary by plan and date. Verify the package and region during procurement.
PlanGrid Field-centric drawing access and collaboration Its official help center describes it as construction productivity software used by contractors and owners; it is stated to be used on more than 1 million projects worldwide (accessed October 18, 2026) Current milestone depth, pricing and roadmap were not established here. Compare its present capabilities with the current Autodesk platform before standardizing.
360-degree camera Repeatable visual evidence and remote review Continuous or walk-through documentation lets reviewers compare the same areas over time without being on site Evaluate mounting, weather protection, storage, upload time, image quality and the workflow for naming and locating captures.
Drone Large, horizontal, remote or hard-to-access sites Aerial imagery can show broad site conditions and, with suitable payloads and processing, support grade or quantity measurement Operator competence, safety controls, airspace rules, weather, processing and project-specific cost must be assessed.

Autodesk Forma Build: schedule-to-field progress

Autodesk Forma Build is the most natural fit when the team wants schedule logic and field installation data in one workflow. Build can track installation using a completion percentage, a measured amount or an object count. Those values can be surfaced in a dashboard so a manager can see progress by area, system or activity rather than relying only on narrative updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedule imports and commitments

Autodesk Schedule and Workplan support imports from Primavera P6, Microsoft Project and Asta Powerproject. After import, the team can create task commitments, assign responsibility and collect mobile status updates. Percent Plan Complete provides a way to examine how many planned commitments were completed in a period, rather than treating a single subjective percentage as the whole story.

How to use Build for measurable installation

  1. Import the approved schedule and confirm that activity IDs, dates and relationships match the contract baseline.
  2. Break major activities into measurable work packages, such as installed units, linear metres, rooms or inspected objects.
  3. Assign each package to a responsible person and set the reporting period.
  4. Have field staff update status from mobile devices, recording the quantity or count completed and any reason for variance.
  5. Attach dated photos, mark-ups or inspection records to the relevant location or activity.
  6. Review the dashboard against the baseline and escalate activities whose dates, quantities or commitments diverge.

Important product-path check

The legacy Progress Tracking beta ended, and existing data migrated to Assets in 2023. Do not build a new process around an old screen name. Confirm which current Forma Build, Assets, Schedule and Workplan views are available to your account, region and contract before training the project team.

Procore: broad reporting and visual context

Procore is suited to projects where progress reporting must combine many disciplines and evidence types. Its documented capabilities include 360 Reporting dashboards and maps that can display GPS-tagged photos. Its progress-tracking guidance also treats 360-degree cameras, drones, BIM, Gantt charts, artificial intelligence and robotics as complementary methods rather than a single replacement for schedule control.

Where Procore adds value

  • Dashboards: combine schedule or status information into views for project managers, owners and executives.
  • Maps: place GPS-tagged photos in geographic context, useful for distributed work, civil projects and site logistics.
  • Visual records: connect site images and walk-throughs to locations and reporting periods.
  • Multiple data sources: give teams a place to relate drawings, models, schedules, reports and field records.

Procore product behavior and feature availability can change by subscription plan and release date. During selection, ask for a demonstration using your own schedule structure, reporting roles, map requirements and visual-capture workflow rather than assuming that a feature mentioned in general guidance is included in every package.

Dave Brown, a Procore Product Success Manager, described drones as “a slam dunk for the construction industry.” That is a statement about their potential, not a guarantee that every project will benefit. A drone still needs a safe operating plan, a qualified operator, suitable weather and a method for converting imagery into decisions.

PlanGrid and field-first drawing workflows

PlanGrid is positioned by its official help center as construction productivity software used by contractors and owners. Its natural role is field access to drawings and collaboration around site information. The help center states that it has been used on more than 1 million projects worldwide, a figure accessed October 18, 2026.

That adoption statement does not establish current milestone-management depth, pricing or future roadmap. If milestone control is the main requirement, test how the current product handles baseline dates, activity quantities, planned-versus-actual views, mobile updates, dashboard filters and export of the project record. A drawing-centric workflow may be excellent for resolving field information while still needing a dedicated schedule or integrated platform for critical-path control.

360-degree cameras versus drones

Visual capture is evidence, not a schedule. Use it to verify conditions, communicate remotely and reduce disputes about what was visible on a particular date.

Question 360-degree camera Drone
Best coverage Interior rooms, corridors, plant areas and repeatable walking routes Roofs, earthworks, roads, façades, yards and large horizontal areas
Repeatability High when the same route, height and capture points are used High when flight paths, altitude and camera settings are documented
Access constraints Requires safe personnel access and suitable mounting or carrying equipment Useful where ground access is slow or hazardous, but requires a safe flight area
Data considerations Large image files, storage, upload time and location naming Flight planning, processing, georeferencing and potentially specialist measurement
Primary risks Missing areas, inconsistent routes, poor lighting, weather exposure and unstructured files Airspace restrictions, weather, people and plant, battery limits, operator skill and privacy

Making a 360 walk useful

  1. Define a route and capture points for each building level or work zone.
  2. Record the date, time, operator, route and project location with every walk.
  3. Use the same approximate height and direction at repeat points so changes are comparable.
  4. Upload promptly and link the capture to a drawing, map, room, grid or activity.
  5. Review exceptions such as missing rooms, blocked routes, glare or poor focus before treating the walk as complete.

Making drone evidence useful

  1. Confirm the site’s airspace, permissions, safety zones and contract requirements before flight.
  2. Define the decision the imagery must support: overall progress, stockpile volume, earthwork quantities, roof installation or access planning.
  3. Use a repeatable flight plan and record date, altitude, camera settings and coverage.
  4. Keep people, vehicles and structures controlled according to the project safety plan.
  5. Store the original files and the processed outputs, with a clear link between imagery and the reporting period.
  6. Have a competent reviewer explain what the imagery proves and what it cannot prove.

A repeatable progress-monitoring workflow

The following six-step workflow works whether the evidence is entered in an integrated platform, a drawing system or a controlled report.

  1. Define the baseline. Break the master schedule into measurable activities and milestone dates. Preserve the approved baseline so later changes are distinguishable from missed commitments.
  2. Assign an evidence method. For every activity, specify whether status requires a field update, calibrated sheet mark-up, dated photo, 360 walk, drone flight or inspection record. One activity may need more than one evidence type.
  3. Capture on a fixed cadence. Decide who submits updates, when they are due and which location or asset they cover. Record the submitter, timestamp and area so a later reviewer can trace the claim.
  4. Compare plan with actual. Review planned dates and quantities against actual status. Focus the meeting on activities that are late, incomplete, blocked or diverging from the expected production rate.
  5. Locate and verify. Use maps, models or drawing context to find the claimed work. Check that the evidence covers the same area and period as the reported quantity.
  6. Publish the decision report. Issue a concise daily or weekly report containing weather, manpower, completed work, blockers, evidence and the next milestones. Assign an owner and due date to every recovery action.

How to track milestones in near real time

“Real time” should mean that the time between field change and management visibility is short enough to act, not that every event appears instantly. Set a cadence that matches the risk of the work. A high-risk installation may need same-shift updates; a low-risk finish activity may be reviewed daily.

Use milestone gates, not vague percentages

Define objective gates for each milestone. For a room handover, gates might be rough-in complete, inspection passed, finishes complete, defects closed and owner acceptance recorded. A single “90% complete” value hides which gate is preventing handover.

Separate production status from approval status

Work can be physically installed but not accepted, tested or documented. Track installation, inspection, test result and approval as related but distinct states. This prevents a completed quantity from being mistaken for a contractually complete milestone.

Set exception rules

Dashboards should draw attention to exceptions: a commitment due within a defined window with no update, a quantity below the planned production rate, a milestone with an open predecessor, or evidence that does not cover the reported location. Exception rules make a dashboard actionable instead of decorative.

What belongs in a daily construction progress report

A daily report should let someone who was not on site understand conditions, production, risk and the next decision. Include the following fields.

Section Minimum useful content
Project and period Project name, date, shift, reporting author and work areas covered
Weather Observed conditions that affected access, safety, curing, lifting, excavation or productivity
Manpower Trade or crew, headcount, working hours and notable changes
Work completed Activity, location, quantity or count, status and evidence reference
Photos and visual records Dated images or 360/drone references tied to a location and activity
Inspections and tests Inspection requested or completed, result, outstanding approval and responsible party
Delays and blockers Cause, affected activity, start date, forecast effect and mitigation owner
Safety and quality Incidents, observations, nonconformances and corrective actions
Next milestones Upcoming dates, prerequisites, owner and evidence required for sign-off

Keep narrative explanations specific. “Work progressing well” is not auditable; “installed 42 of 60 ceiling diffusers in level 2 east corridor, with 18 remaining after material delivery on Tuesday” is useful because it identifies quantity, location and the next condition.

Choosing by project type

Vertical building projects

Use a schedule-linked platform with room, level, grid or asset locations. A 360-degree camera is particularly useful for repeatable interior routes, while mobile status updates and inspection records establish whether installed work is ready for handover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large civil and infrastructure projects

Prioritize map-based reporting, GPS-tagged evidence, quantities and access to aerial imagery. Drones can reduce the need to walk long alignments, but ground verification and survey controls remain important when measurements affect payment or contractual acceptance.

Remote or distributed sites

Choose a system that supports mobile capture in weak-connectivity conditions or a controlled offline-to-online process. Define when data must synchronize and how conflicts are resolved. Visual evidence should be indexed by location so a remote reviewer can find the relevant area without opening every file.

Small contractors and short projects

A full enterprise platform may be unnecessary if the team cannot maintain the required data discipline. Start with a measurable schedule, a standard daily report, a shared evidence structure and a weekly variance review. Upgrade when the number of users, locations, subcontractors or milestones makes manual coordination unreliable.

Ask vendors and implementation partners:

  • Can the system import the schedule format and activity IDs used by the project team?
  • Can a user report by percentage, measured quantity and object count, and can those values be audited?
  • How are baseline changes, approved revisions and recovery schedules distinguished?
  • Can photos, 360 walks, drone files, drawings and inspections be linked to the same location or activity?
  • What works on mobile devices, what requires a connection and how are offline updates synchronized?
  • Which dashboards and exports are included in the proposed plan?
  • How are permissions, subcontractor access, retention and project handover handled?
  • What happens to data if the project leaves the platform?

Include hardware and operational costs in the total: camera or drone equipment, mounts, batteries, protective cases, data storage, processing, operator time, training and the effort required to review evidence.

Implementation plan for the first project

  1. Choose one pilot area. Select a work package with a clear quantity, upcoming milestone and cooperative field supervisor.
  2. Write the measurement rule. State exactly what counts as complete and what evidence is required.
  3. Map responsibilities. Name the field submitter, reviewer, schedule owner and person who can approve a recovery action.
  4. Configure locations. Use consistent building, level, grid, station, room or asset identifiers across drawings, schedules, photos and reports.
  5. Run two reporting cycles. Compare the time required, missing data, duplicate entry and usefulness of the variance discussion.
  6. Correct the workflow. Remove fields that nobody uses, add controls for recurring omissions and train subcontractors before expanding.
  7. Set a governance review. At least monthly, examine permissions, data retention, baseline changes, dashboard definitions and exportability.

Common failure modes and fixes

The dashboard shows percentages nobody trusts

Cause: different supervisors interpret completion differently. Fix: define quantity, count or acceptance gates for each activity and require evidence at the same granularity.

Photos are plentiful but impossible to find

Cause: files lack consistent names, dates or locations. Fix: make location, capture date and activity mandatory metadata; use map or drawing links where available.

The schedule and field system disagree

Cause: activity IDs, calendars, revisions or date conventions differ. Fix: appoint one schedule owner, preserve the approved baseline and reconcile imports before field reporting begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates arrive after the meeting

Cause: the cadence is unrealistic, connectivity is poor or responsibility is unclear. Fix: assign a named submitter, provide an offline procedure, set a cut-off time and escalate missing updates as exceptions.

A drone flight produces impressive images but no decision

Cause: capture was not tied to a question, quantity or milestone. Fix: define the intended decision before flight and document the limits of the resulting imagery.

Milestones are marked complete while approvals remain open

Cause: physical installation is treated as contractual completion. Fix: separate installation, inspection, testing, documentation and acceptance states.

Legacy product terminology causes training errors

Cause: teams follow an older help article or screen name. Fix: verify the current interface, edition and migration path before writing procedures. This is especially important for the former Autodesk Progress Tracking beta, whose existing data migrated to Assets in 2023.

Metrics that make progress meetings useful

Track a small set of measures that lead to action:

  • Milestones due versus achieved: count dates met, missed and forecast at risk.
  • Percent Plan Complete: compare completed commitments with commitments promised for the period.
  • Planned-versus-actual quantity: show production by work package, location and period.
  • Evidence coverage: percentage of reported activities with a valid dated record and location.
  • Age of open blockers: days since an issue was raised and days until the affected milestone.
  • Update timeliness: percentage of required field updates submitted by the cut-off.
  • Rework or reversal rate: work reported complete but later rejected, reopened or corrected.

Do not reward teams for high reported completion if evidence coverage and acceptance status are low. A balanced dashboard makes data quality visible alongside production.

Data ownership, safety and handover

Progress records may become evidence in payment discussions, delay analysis, quality reviews or claims. Establish who can edit a record, who can approve it and how the original version is retained. Keep the capture date, author, location and revision history.

Visual capture also affects privacy and safety. Inform workers and visitors where cameras operate, avoid exposing sensitive personal information, restrict access to security-sensitive areas and follow the project’s photography, drone and airspace rules. A visual record should never encourage a worker to enter an unsafe area merely to obtain a better image.

At handover, export the schedule status, milestone history, approved reports, inspection evidence and indexed visual records in a readable structure. Confirm that the owner can open the files without relying on a temporary user account or an undocumented application setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: match the tool to the control problem

Use Autodesk Forma Build when your priority is connecting imported schedules and Workplan commitments to measurable installation progress and mobile updates. Use Procore when the project needs broad dashboards, maps, photos and multiple visual-monitoring methods. Use PlanGrid when field drawing access and collaboration are central, but verify current milestone capabilities before making it the sole control system. Add a 360-degree camera for repeatable interior evidence and a drone for safe, efficient coverage of large or inaccessible areas.

Whichever combination you choose, define the baseline first, assign an evidence method to every measurable activity, capture updates on a fixed cadence and review exceptions against the next milestone. That operating discipline—not the camera, dashboard or brand name—is what turns site information into dependable progress control.
