Best Toilets for Basement Installation: A Buyer’s Guide

A conventional toilet may work with a suitable gravity rough-in or ejector basin. If the basement is below the building drain, compare an upflush system with a below-slab sewage ejector based on the layout and required fixtures.

The best basement toilet depends on how waste can leave the room. If a toilet rough-in or ejector basin already sits below the floor and is correctly connected, a conventional toilet may work. If the basement fixture is below the building sewer connection and gravity cannot carry waste uphill, you need a pumping system: either an above-floor macerating (upflush) toilet or a below-slab sewage ejector pump. Start by confirming the drainage layout, then choose the system that fits your slab, fixture count, and pipe route.

Can you install a regular toilet in a basement?

Sometimes. A conventional toilet can work if there is an existing below-floor rough-in or ejector basin that provides a suitable drainage path. The key question is whether the fixture can drain by gravity into a properly installed system. If the basement toilet sits below the sewer or main-drain connection and gravity cannot move waste to it, a pump is required. Zoeller describes the common alternatives as a sewage ejector pump in a below-floor basin or an upflush toilet system that pumps waste upward: Zoeller’s overview of sewage ejector and upflush options.

Before buying a toilet, have the rough-in, basin, and route to the building drain checked. The presence of a capped pipe or an old toilet location does not by itself establish that the drainage system is usable or suitable for a new bathroom.

Upflush toilet or sewage ejector pump?

Both approaches pump wastewater to a higher connection; they differ in where the waste is collected and how the installation is arranged. An upflush unit sits behind or near a compatible toilet and pumps waste through a discharge line. An ejector system collects drainage from fixtures in a basin below the slab, then pumps it to the sewer or septic connection. The right choice depends on the project rather than a universal ranking.

Typical fit Projects where avoiding slab cutting is important and the selected unit’s limits suit the layout. Projects involving slab work, especially when several fixtures will drain to a shared basin.
Where waste is collected At the macerator/pump serving the toilet and any manufacturer-approved auxiliary fixtures. In a basin installed below the floor; fixture drains flow to the basin before pumping.
Toilet compatibility Some models require a matching rear-outlet toilet; a standard floor-outlet toilet may not fit. A conventional toilet arrangement may be possible, subject to the basin and drainage design.
Planning focus Compatible fixtures, lift and horizontal run, power, venting, discharge route, and service access. Basin location and size, pump sizing, fixture routing, venting, check valve, discharge, and code requirements.

Choose an upflush system when

  • You want to avoid opening finished concrete, and the manufacturer’s permitted lift and pipe run accommodate the route to the soil stack.
  • The exact unit supports the fixtures you plan to connect, such as a toilet alone or a toilet with a sink and shower.
  • You can provide the required toilet type, electrical supply, vent connection, discharge piping, and service access.

Consider an ejector basin when

  • Slab work is already planned or practical.
  • Several fixtures need to drain into a shared below-floor basin.
  • A plumber can size and lay out the basin, pump, vent, check valve, and discharge for the actual fixture load and site conditions.

What to verify before ordering

  1. Find the building drain and establish elevations. Confirm where the basement floor and proposed fixture sit relative to the sewer or main-drain connection. This determines whether gravity drainage is possible or pumping is needed.
  2. Inspect any existing rough-in or basin. Verify its location, condition, connection, and suitability for the planned toilet and other fixtures. Do not assume an existing pipe is a ready-to-use rough-in.
  3. Decide whether slab work is acceptable. A below-slab ejector basin requires a suitable installation below the floor. An upflush unit may avoid that work, but it still needs a viable route for its discharge, vent, and power.
  4. Count the fixtures. Record whether the system will serve only a toilet, a toilet and sink, or a full bath with a shower or bathtub. Check the specific model’s permitted connections and capacity; do not assume every macerator supports every fixture combination.
  5. Measure the complete discharge route. Record the vertical lift and horizontal distance to the connection point, including the planned pipe route. Compare both with the exact pump’s specifications or pump curve rather than relying on a headline maximum alone.
  6. Confirm toilet and plumbing compatibility. Check whether the system requires a rear-outlet toilet, and follow its specified discharge diameter, vent arrangement, and connection instructions.
  7. Plan electricity, venting, and service access. Verify the manufacturer’s supply and circuit requirements, the vent route, and room to reach the pump for maintenance or service. Ask about replacement parts and local service availability.
  8. Check local rules before installation. Ask the local plumbing authority or a qualified plumber about permits and applicable code requirements. Rules vary by location, and the selected product’s instructions do not replace local code.

Saniflo SaniPLUS: a model-specific example

Saniflo’s 2018 catalog describes the SaniPLUS as a 1/2 HP macerating system for a complete bathroom. In that catalog, the stated installation limits are up to 15 feet below the sewer line or up to 150 feet from a soil stack. It requires Saniflo’s compatible 1.28 GPF rear-discharge toilet, specifies a 3/4-inch or 1-inch discharge line and a 1 1/2-inch vent connection, and says the system must connect to a two-way vent system. The catalog lists auxiliary connections for a sink and a bath or shower; it says the shower base should be raised at least 6 inches. These are manufacturer details in a 2018 catalog, not general specifications for upflush toilets: Saniflo’s 2018 product catalog.

The catalog also states, “All plumbing codes require connection to a vent system.” Check current instructions for the exact model and confirm local requirements before purchase or installation; a catalog specification does not establish current availability or code approval for your location.

Another model example: Saniflo Saniaccess3

Saniflo’s catalog lists the Saniaccess3 as a 1/2 HP system for a complete bathroom, with the same stated limits of up to 15 feet below the sewer line or 150 feet from a soil stack. It specifies a 120 V, 60 Hz supply, maximum draw of 4.5 A, a 3/4-inch or 1-inch discharge, a rear-outlet toilet connection, and sink and shower/bathtub connections. The manufacturer reports noise at or below 53 dBA measured at 3 feet; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independent comparison with other systems. Check current product documentation for the model you are considering: Saniflo’s 2018 product catalog.

How a sewage ejector system works

Fixture drains flow by gravity into a basin below the slab. When wastewater reaches the pump’s float, the pump sends it up to the main sewer or septic connection. This arrangement can support a conventional toilet, but it calls for project-specific planning of the basin, pump size, fixture drains, vent, check valve, and discharge line. A qualified plumber should evaluate those details against the actual layout and local requirements; no single pump size can be recommended without that information. Zoeller outlines the ejector approach and its relationship to upflush systems in its sewage ejector and upflush overview.

What the available specifications do—and do not—tell you

Manufacturer limits and connection details are useful for screening a product, but they do not establish which system will perform best in a particular basement. The cited material does not provide comparative long-term reliability, lifespan, cost, or owner-satisfaction data. Base the choice on the verified drainage layout, the exact system’s current documentation, and a project-specific review by a qualified plumber.
