The right fix for a wobbling toilet seat depends on its mounting system: some seats use bolts and nuts tightened from beneath the bowl, while others use top-fix anchors or quick-attach hardware. Identify the hinge and check whether you can reach underneath before buying parts. There is no single screw size or replacement kit that fits every seat.
Identify the toilet seat fixing before tightening or buying parts
Look at the hinges and the fixing holes at the back of the bowl. If you can reach a nut beneath the bowl, the seat may use a conventional bottom-fix arrangement. If there is no accessible nut, it may use a top-fix anchor, quick-attach fitting, expansion plug, or model-specific assembly. These systems use different parts and tightening methods.
When the hinge design is concealed or unfamiliar, check the seat or toilet model and its parts list. Geberit, for example, catalogs bolts and hinge parts by product family, rather than establishing one replacement bolt for every seat: Geberit WC solutions and parts.
How to tighten a loose toilet seat
For a conventional bottom-fix seat
Kohler’s instructions for its standard seats describe aligning the hinge holes with the bowl holes, inserting the bolts from above, and threading the plastic nuts on below. If the supplied hardware includes a metal washer and a rubber washer, place the rubber washer between the hinge and the china. Keep the seat straight and centered as you tighten; tighten from above with a screwdriver, holding the bolt if it turns. For a quick-attach or top-fix system
Do not assume that every top-fix fitting tightens like a conventional bolt and nut. In Kohler’s Quick-Attach procedure, a bolt passes through the top of the hinge and a wing nut is pushed upward from underneath until it meets the bowl. Its conical top catches the bolt threads inside the hole, and the bolt is tightened from above with a screwdriver. This describes Kohler’s system, not all top-fix designs. What to check when choosing replacement toilet seat screws
- Mounting style: Determine whether the current seat uses a nut beneath the bowl or a top-fix anchor or quick-attach fitting.
- Seat and toilet model: Look up the model if the hinge is concealed, quick-release, or proprietary. Some manufacturers list replacement hardware for specified models; American Standard’s instructions, for example, identify a hardware kit for particular seats. - Hole and hinge arrangement: Check the shape and position of the bowl fixing holes, and whether the replacement needs an adapter or a matching hinge plate.
- Parts included: Confirm whether the kit contains the bolts, nuts or anchors, washers, hinge parts, and any stabilizers your arrangement needs. Check material claims on the product listing if corrosion resistance matters.
- Scope of repair: Establish whether you need only replacement bolts or a complete hinge assembly.
A search for a toilet seat fixing kit or replacement toilet seat bolts is a useful starting point, but match the result to the identified mounting system and seat model. A generic kit may suit some arrangements; the available manufacturer instructions do not establish a universal screw diameter, length, hole spacing, or compatibility standard.

How to remove a seized toilet seat bolt
If the fastener will not turn, The Home Depot’s installation guidance suggests penetrating oil or, if necessary, a small hacksaw. Cutting a bolt near a porcelain bowl can cause damage, and the guidance does not provide a detailed method for protecting the china. Use care, and stop if removal risks chipping or cracking the bowl. Check the exact model and parts listing before ordering. A broken seat, an integrated hinge that cannot be repaired, or unavailable compatible parts may make replacement of the complete seat the practical option. Model-specific catalogs and instructions are more reliable than guessing from a bolt’s appearance.
