For most homes with a septic system, the best choice is a water-efficient toilet with independently verified flushing performance that fits the existing plumbing. EPA guidance says high-efficiency toilets can reduce the water entering a septic system, but the reviewed sources do not establish a separate toilet category certified specifically as “septic safe.” Choose by verified performance, water use and fit—not by an unsupported septic-safe label.
Does a low-flow toilet work with a septic system?
Yes. A low-flow toilet can work with a septic system, and using less water can reduce the volume sent to it. The EPA explains that “all the water a household sends down its pipes ends up in its septic system” in its How to Care for Your Septic System guidance.
EPA describes high-efficiency toilets as using 1.6 gallons per flush or less, compared with 3.5 to 5 gallons for many older toilets, and recommends replacing existing toilets with high-efficiency models to reduce water entering a septic system. Those are general guidance figures, not a guarantee of how a particular toilet will perform in your home.
How many gallons per flush should you look for?
Use the flush-volume figures as a starting point, then check performance and current certification for the exact model. EPA’s residential-toilet page describes WaterSense toilets as using 1.28 gallons per flush or less and says certified models are tested for performance and efficiency. As of the page checked in 2026, EPA says the effective date for WaterSense Version 2.0 is paused and Version 1.2 remains in effect until further notice. Check the EPA WaterSense residential toilets page for current program status, and verify that the model you are considering is currently certified.

What to compare when choosing a toilet
Compare the same practical details across models rather than relying on a “septic safe” marketing claim. The available EPA guidance supports water-use and certification criteria; it does not provide model-specific test results, prices or fit comparisons.

Why water efficiency matters to a septic system
Reducing household water use reduces the volume flowing into the septic system. EPA estimates that toilets account for 25 to 30 percent of household water use. It also says one leaky or running toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons per day. These are EPA’s general figures, not estimates of a particular household’s use or savings.
Check for leaks as well as choosing an efficient replacement: a running toilet can send substantial avoidable water to the system. The cited figures and replacement guidance appear in EPA’s septic-system care guidance.

What not to flush
Toilet choice is only one part of protecting a septic system. EPA advises flushing only human waste and toilet paper. Keep wipes, dental floss, diapers, paper towels, grease and household chemicals out of the system, even when an item is described as flushable.

If the septic system is failing, showing signs of trouble or seems overloaded, do not treat a new toilet as a repair. EPA recommends consulting a local professional before making significant septic-system upgrades. A professional can assess the system and help determine whether the problem is related to water use, maintenance, installation or another cause; the cited guidance does not establish that toilet replacement alone will resolve a system problem.
