Clorox Lime & Rust Destroyer and Zep Home Pro Stain Eliminator are bowl-specific options for rust and mineral buildup; CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover with Cling is a separate option for surface stains on grout. These are manufacturer-listed uses, not a head-to-head tested ranking.
Choose by surface, not just by stain
Rust and hard-water marks can look similar on different materials, but that does not make their cleaners interchangeable. A toilet-bowl formula is directed for the inside of a toilet; CLR lists its Cling product for grout surface stains. Follow the directions on the exact container, especially where a product’s general instructions differ from the directions for a specific version.

Both product pages give a five-minute wait, but the application directions are not identical. Use the current package label rather than transferring directions from one cleaner to another.
For surface stains on grout
CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover with Cling
CLR specifically lists grout as a surface for its Cling product. That listing is not a direction to use it inside a toilet bowl. The standard CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover directions provide important safety context, but are not a substitute for the exact Cling container label: use in a well-ventilated area, dilute equally with warm water, spot-test first, keep contact to no more than 2 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Check the surface manufacturer’s compatibility guidance as well.

Acid, bleach and label precautions
Clorox describes its Heavy Duty Stain and Ring Remover as acidic and bleach-free, and says it is intended for rust and hard-water stains. Its directions specify a five-minute wait and say children and pets should not have access to the toilet during that time. Do not treat these statements as general safety advice for other products; read and follow each cleaner’s label.
For additional context on clinging bowl formulas, the EPA-hosted Lysol product label, updated July 18, 2023, says: “This product has a thick formula that coats above and below the waterline. This coating action provides longer contact time to help dissolve tough rust stains and mineral deposits (on contact) to make cleaning easier.” This is label language describing that product, not an independent comparison of cleaners.

How to use the comparison
- For rust, lime scale or hard-water buildup inside a toilet, choose a product whose label names toilet bowls and follow its bowl directions.
- For grout surface stains, use a product whose label specifically lists grout, and confirm that the instructions suit the surrounding material.
- Do not rank these products by advertised performance claims alone. The available manufacturer descriptions establish intended uses and directions, not comparative test results.
