The right choice depends on whether your system uses communicating or conventional controls, how many heating and cooling stages it has, whether auxiliary heat is installed, and what wiring and power it requires. Goodman’s GTST is a candidate for Goodman communicating unitary equipment—not a universal fit for every Goodman heat pump. Confirm your equipment models and current documentation before buying.
What thermostat works with a Goodman heat pump?
Choose a thermostat that supports the control type and functions of the installed system. A heat-pump control must handle the heat pump’s operating modes and, when fitted, auxiliary heat. It also needs to match the system’s stages and wiring. Goodman advises that equipment features and thermostat capabilities must match; if you cannot identify your system, consult a licensed HVAC professional. Goodman’s HVAC Learning Center explains heat-pump controls, wiring, voltage, and equipment stages.
- Control type: Determine whether the equipment uses Goodman communicating controls or a conventional thermostat connection.
- Heat-pump and backup-heat support: Confirm heat-pump operation and auxiliary or electric backup heat support when those functions are part of the system.
- Stages: Match the thermostat to the installed single-stage, two-stage, or multistage equipment. A control that lacks the appropriate wiring or functions may not let the system use its intended capabilities.
- Power and wiring: Identify the actual conductors and whether a C-wire is available. Wire colors alone do not establish compatibility.
- System configuration: A Goodman heat pump may be part of a communicating, conventional, staged, or dual-fuel setup; the brand name alone does not identify the right thermostat.
Does the Goodman GTST work with your heat pump?
Goodman states that the GTST Connected Thermostat is compatible with all Goodman communicating unitary equipment. That claim is specific to communicating equipment. It does not establish compatibility with every Goodman heat pump, including systems using conventional controls. Check the air-handler and outdoor-unit model numbers against the equipment’s current installation and commissioning literature before purchasing.
Goodman’s product page describes the GTST as intended for Goodman SD inverter systems and lists Wi-Fi connection to SkyportHome, voice control through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, a seven-day schedule with up to four events per day, and an auxiliary output configurable for humidification, dehumidification, or another heat source. Confirm the functions and configuration in current documentation for your installed system. Goodman’s Literature Library lists product specifications and guides.

Does a Goodman heat-pump thermostat need a C-wire?
Not every thermostat or installation has the same power requirements. Goodman notes that advanced connected thermostats may require a C-wire for constant power, and that adding wiring may require professional help. Check the thermostat’s requirements against the wiring at your control and the equipment documentation; do not assume that an existing wire or its color confirms compatibility. If there is no C-wire or you are unsure how the system is powered, have a licensed HVAC professional assess it before installation.
Should you manually turn on auxiliary or emergency heat?
Goodman says that if you are comfortable at home, you do not need to manually switch on auxiliary or emergency heat. The system can engage auxiliary heat when the heat pump needs additional capacity to meet the set temperature. If your home continually needs extra warmth, Goodman advises contacting a licensed professional dealer. See Goodman’s heat-pump questions and answers.

- 【WARNING】1. Does not work with conventional multistage systems, mini split systems and 12v rv thermostats. ( 2. Not compatible with 110-240V electric heat systems (like electric baseboard heat, line voltage, convectors, radiant-ceiling heat).
When to call an HVAC professional
Ask a licensed HVAC professional to confirm compatibility when the control type, staging, backup heat, or model-specific wiring is unclear. Professional help is also prudent if wiring must be added, a connected thermostat needs a C-wire, or the system is advanced or dual-fuel. Goodman’s equipment documentation warns that wiring diagrams can change and directs users to the current diagram for the specific unit. Its AVPTC air-handler wiring documentation is an example of unit-specific material, not a substitute for the current diagram for another model.
Do not wire a thermostat by generic color conventions or rely on a diagram for a different unit. Equipment service can involve high voltage. If compatibility or wiring is uncertain, leave installation and configuration to a qualified professional.
