What makes a yoga mat sustainable?
“Sustainable” is not one material or a verified lifecycle result. Natural rubber, cork, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are common comparison points, but a category guide does not establish a universal lifecycle winner. Material names alone also do not disclose every impact involved in sourcing, manufacturing, use and disposal.
For a more grounded comparison, look for the actual construction and ask whether the manufacturer provides evidence for its environmental claims. The available product information here is manufacturer-published; it does not include an independent lifecycle assessment or a standardized comparison of grip and durability.

Manduka eKO 5mm: a fit for some practices, not all
Construction and practical dimensions
Manduka says the eKO 5mm uses natural rubber with over 30% recycled content. Its standard size is 71 × 26 inches (180 × 66 cm), 5 mm thick and 7 lb (3.2 kg). Those dimensions make weight worth considering if you regularly carry your mat; the manufacturer’s listing does not establish how its environmental impact compares with other mats.
Grip when you sweat
The eKO’s closed-cell surface is non-porous and does not absorb moisture. Manduka cautions that sweaty users may find it slick, and recommends a hand towel for extra traction or a full mat towel for hot yoga. If sweat is central to your practice, treat the towel as part of the setup rather than assuming the mat itself will absorb moisture.

Wear and latex sensitivity
Manduka says the eKO is more sensitive to wear than synthetic mats and does not recommend it for vigorous daily practice. Its product page also warns, “Not recommended for those with Latex sensitivities.” This is a product-specific manufacturer warning, not general medical advice; anyone with latex sensitivity should follow appropriate clinical guidance and choose a mat whose manufacturer clearly addresses their needs.
JadeYoga: distinguish the cork mat from Harmony 2.0
JadeYoga describes its cork mat as using sustainably harvested cork and natural rubber. Separately, it describes Harmony 2.0 as FSC and OEKO-TEX certified. Do not assume those statements apply to every JadeYoga mat or establish certification scope for a particular material or production stage; confirm the current certificate details with the company.

JadeYoga also says its mats are made in the USA and that it plants a tree for every product sold. These are manufacturer claims; the available information does not independently audit sourcing, certification scope or tree-planting outcomes. The company describes its plant-based mat wash as specially made for natural-rubber mats, but check current availability and its label before relying on it.

For the eKO, Manduka advises wiping the surface after practice with its Natural Rubber Yoga Mat Restore or a clean, damp cloth. Let the mat air dry completely and keep it away from prolonged direct sunlight. Manduka says not to soak or submerge it, use harsh chemicals or put it in a washing machine.

How to choose a durable, lower-impact mat
- Start with your practice. If you do vigorous daily sessions or hot yoga, check the maker’s wear and sweat guidance before choosing a material or surface.
- Read the construction, not just the label. Identify the named materials and any stated recycled content. Treat terms such as “sustainable” or “eco” as claims to investigate, not proof of lower lifecycle impact.
- Check practical fit. Compare thickness, dimensions and weight, and consider latex-sensitivity warnings where relevant.
- Look for care instructions. A mat that needs material-specific cleaning should be maintained accordingly; improper cleaning can conflict with the maker’s guidance.
- Keep evidence in perspective. Manufacturer specifications and certifications can inform a purchase, but without comparable independent lifecycle and durability testing they do not establish which mat is objectively most sustainable or longest-lasting.
