For most powered subwoofers, buy a shielded RCA-to-RCA coaxial cable in the length you need. A conventional 75-ohm digital coax cable with RCA plugs can carry an analog LFE signal; 75 ohms is not mandatory. You usually do not need an expensive cable marketed specifically for subwoofers. Prioritize a secure fit, shielding, suitable routing length and—if the cable will run inside a wall—the correct installation rating.
For a straightforward setup, the Monoprice 6-foot RG6/U cable is a strong value option: its product page listed it at $17.99 on August 16, 2026. For custom lengths or a hum-prone installation, consider Blue Jeans Cable LC-2. Choose an in-wall-rated cable only after checking its jacket marking and local code requirements.

What cable does a powered subwoofer need?
Most powered subwoofers connect to an AV receiver, integrated amplifier or preamp through a line-level output and an RCA input. The receiver end may be labeled SUBWOOFER OUT, LFE OUT or PRE-OUT; the subwoofer end may say LFE IN, LINE IN or simply identify an RCA input.
“RCA” describes the connector. “Coaxial” describes a cable construction: a center conductor surrounded by insulation and a shield. “LFE” refers to the low-frequency-effects channel and, in common home-theater setups, the receiver output used to feed the subwoofer. A cable sold as a subwoofer cable is a product category, not a universal technical standard. Blue Jeans Cable explains the distinction between RCA connectors and coaxial cable construction.

This advice is for a powered subwoofer with a compatible line-level input. A passive subwoofer generally needs an appropriate amplifier; a line-level RCA cable alone cannot drive it. Some soundbars use proprietary wireless subwoofers or non-RCA outputs, so check both devices before buying.
Do you need a dedicated subwoofer cable?
Usually not. A regular RCA cable can work, particularly on a short run, if it is adequately shielded, its plugs fit securely and it can be routed away from likely sources of interference. A dedicated cable may be a better practical choice when it offers useful shielding, stronger strain relief, a more secure connector, the length you need or a documented building rating.
Do not assume all RCA cables are equally suitable: the plug alone says nothing about shielding, flexibility or cable rating. A 75-ohm digital-coax cable with RCA connectors is a sensible option because it has coaxial construction and shielding, but its impedance is not a requirement for an analog LFE connection.

Compatibility and connector fit
For the usual receiver-to-powered-subwoofer connection, look for RCA plugs at both ends. The plugs should sit firmly without needing excessive force. A loose connection can cause intermittent bass, crackling when moved, hum or a plug that falls out behind furniture. Gold plating can help resist corrosion; it does not, by itself, make a cable sound better.

Use XLR only when the source and subwoofer have compatible balanced connections. An RCA-to-XLR adapter is not a universal upgrade; wiring and grounding depend on the equipment. Some subwoofers, including certain REL models, also accept high-level speaker signals. That is a different connection method from an RCA LFE cable; follow the subwoofer maker’s instructions.
Shielding and routing
For an unbalanced RCA connection, shielding is the main practical cable feature to consider when reducing interference. Blue Jeans Cable recommends dense braid shielding for low-frequency hum rejection and says its double-braid arrangement performed better than other configurations in the company’s own testing. That is a manufacturer’s test claim, not an independent industry-wide finding. Blue Jeans Cable’s FAQ discusses shielding and interference.
Keep the cable away from AC cords, power bricks, dimmers and bundled extension cords where practical. Cross a power cable at roughly a right angle rather than running the two together for a long distance. If the subwoofer reproduces radio or other RF signals, cable-borne interference is possible, but the subwoofer’s internal circuitry may also be involved. Blue Jeans suggests considering braid-over-foil coax such as Belden 1694A for some RFI situations; a cable change is not guaranteed to fix the problem.

Measure the actual route, not just the straight-line distance between the receiver and subwoofer. Allow slack for moving the subwoofer during placement experiments, gentle bends and connectors that are not under tension. Six to 12 feet is common in many living rooms, but the right length depends on the room. Longer runs make careful shielding and routing more important; unusually long or complex installations may call for balanced connections or active distribution if the equipment supports them.

RG6-style cable can provide robust shielding but may be stiffer than flexible audio coax. Choose a cable that can make the route without a sharp bend behind the connector or strain on the jack. Do not buy extra length that creates an unwieldy coil, but do not stretch a cable tight to save a few feet.
Capacitance and construction claims
Published specifications illustrate how cable constructions vary: Blue Jeans lists LC-2 below 11 pF/ft and LC-1 at approximately 12.2 pF/ft; Monoprice lists 22 pF/ft for its referenced six-foot RG6 cable. For a subwoofer-only LFE connection, do not make capacitance the deciding factor: practical priorities are usually shielding, routing, connector reliability and the correct installation rating. Blue Jeans Cable lists LC-1 and LC-2 specifications; Monoprice lists specifications for its RG6 cable.
Claims that premium conductors or elaborate materials automatically make bass deeper, tighter or more controlled are not established as universal audible improvements. More expensive designs may still appeal for their construction, connector security, finish, warranty or brand matching.
In-wall installation rating
Do not infer in-wall approval from a “subwoofer cable,” “RG6” or “75 ohm” label. Check the cable jacket and confirm the rating required for the installation, such as CL2, CL3, CM, CMR or CMP. Requirements depend on local code and whether the route passes through an air-handling space. Check the wall plate and connectors as well as the cable. These ratings concern installation suitability, not sound quality.

How to connect a subwoofer cable
- Mute or turn off the equipment. Power down the receiver or amplifier and subwoofer before connecting.
- Find the source output. Identify the receiver’s SUBWOOFER OUT, LFE OUT or equivalent preamp output.
- Find the subwoofer input. Use its dedicated LFE IN if present; otherwise check the manual for the correct line input.
- Connect the cable. Run one RCA cable from the receiver’s subwoofer output to the subwoofer’s LFE input. A Monoprice manual also describes a single coaxial RCA connection between an amplifier or receiver LFE output and a subwoofer LFE input: Monoprice manual.
- Select the input if needed. Set the subwoofer’s input selector to the connected input, if it has one.
- Run system setup. Follow the receiver’s speaker setup or calibration routine. When the receiver manages bass through its LFE output, follow both manuals for the subwoofer crossover control; the manufacturer may recommend bypassing it or setting it to its highest value.
If the subwoofer has left and right line inputs but no LFE input
Check the subwoofer manual first. It may specify the left/mono input, or it may recommend feeding both inputs with an RCA Y-adapter. Some designs benefit from both inputs receiving the signal, but a Y-cable is not universally necessary and should not be assumed to improve performance. Blue Jeans Cable also advises checking the subwoofer manual for dual-input connections.
If you have two subwoofers
Use two receiver subwoofer outputs if available. If there is only one, follow the receiver maker’s recommended splitting or distribution method. A passive Y-splitter may be electrically adequate, but it does not address placement or room calibration. Route parallel cable runs carefully to limit interference.

How much should you spend?
For a short, ordinary run, a well-made shielded cable in the roughly $10–$25 range is often enough; the Monoprice six-foot cable was listed at $17.99 on August 16, 2026. Custom-length or more specialized options can cost more, while premium cables may exceed $100 and luxury examples can cost several hundred dollars. These are broad buying tiers, not a survey of current prices.

Spend extra when a real need justifies it: a custom length, an appropriate in-wall rating, difficult routing, a connector that stays secure, or a construction and warranty you value. A $399 REL cable may suit an owner seeking REL’s connector design and brand match, but it is hard to justify for a typical receiver-to-subwoofer run when a lower-cost shielded cable provides the required connection.
How to troubleshoot subwoofer hum or interference
Hum does not automatically mean the cable is defective. It can come from a ground loop, signal routing near AC wiring, connected source equipment or the subwoofer itself. Try these steps in order:
- Check the signal path. With the subwoofer powered, disconnect the RCA cable at its input. If the hum stops, investigate the source, cable and grounding relationship; if it continues, the cause may be in the subwoofer or its power connection.
- Change the route. Move the RCA cable away from AC cords, power bricks, dimmers and extension-cord bundles.
- Try a better-shielded cable. This may help with interference picked up along the cable, but it cannot fix every ground-loop problem.
- Use a shared power circuit where practical. Plug connected equipment into the same circuit if feasible, without using unsafe adapters or overloading it.
- Get help if hum persists. A ground-loop isolator may be appropriate for a confirmed signal-path issue; seek qualified audio or electrical troubleshooting if the cause is unclear. Never remove an equipment grounding pin or otherwise defeat the safety ground.
If the subwoofer reproduces radio, CB, ham or other RF signals, a cable change may help only when the cable is the pickup path. The interference can also enter through internal circuitry. Blue Jeans discusses braid-over-foil cable as one option for certain RFI cases in its subwoofer cable FAQ.

Quick buying checklist
- Confirm that the source has a subwoofer or line-level output and the subwoofer has a compatible input.
- For a standard LFE connection, choose RCA-to-RCA; use another connection type only when both devices support it.
- Measure the cable route and leave enough slack to move the subwoofer without stressing the plugs.
- Prefer a shielded coaxial cable with secure connectors; choose flexibility if the route is tight.
- For in-wall routing, verify the cable’s jacket marking, local code and any air-handling-space requirements.
- Buy premium construction only for a specific installation, fit, warranty or appearance preference—not on the assumption that price alone improves bass.
