The Zircon StudSensor Center is one documented option: Zircon specifies center and edge detection for wood and metal studs, with standard scanning up to ¾ inch and a deeper mode up to 1½ inches. These are manufacturer specifications, not guaranteed results on every wall.
Which type of stud finder should you choose?
Electronic stud finders sense changes in wall density that can indicate framing. Other materials or irregularities—including pipes, wires, moisture, and uneven surfaces—can also affect a reading, so no detector should be treated as a definitive map of everything inside a wall.
| Option | What it indicates | Useful features and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Zircon StudSensor Center | Edges and centers of wood and metal studs | Zircon specifies up to ¾ inch in Stud Scan and up to 1½ inches in DeepScan. It has LED and audio alerts, a SpotLite pointer, and an erasable marker. Its live, unshielded-wire warning is specified up to 2 inches. Requires two AA batteries, not included. Zircon product specifications. |
| Franklin Sensors ProSensor X995 | Multiple LEDs display changes in density across the tool | The instructions explain that surface irregularities, pipes, or wires can activate LEDs and warn that the detector may not detect all live wires or hidden objects. Franklin Sensors X995 instructions. |
| Zircon StudSensor 70 | Edges and centers, with standard and deep modes | The product page showed the model out of stock when accessed; current availability is not established. Zircon product page. |
| Zircon StudSensor Pro LCD | Stud edges | Has standard and deep modes and a live-wire alert. Zircon says depth and accuracy vary with wall conditions. Zircon product specifications. |
| Magnetic finder | Ferrous drywall fasteners, not wood framing directly | Can be a simple way to look for fasteners, but the cited sources do not establish a named model comparison or independent performance results. |
There is no independent head-to-head accuracy or speed result in the cited manufacturer materials, so a claim that one model is the fastest or most accurate would not be supported. Choose by the feedback you find easiest to interpret, the need for center versus edge readings, and the wall conditions you expect.
Center-finding versus edge-finding detectors
Center-finding
A center-finding tool indicates the stud center directly, which can make marking a target straightforward. The StudSensor Center also indicates edges, so you can check the width of the detected area.

Edge-finding
An edge-finding detector signals one side of a stud at a time. Mark both edges and use the midpoint as the estimated center; do not assume that a single edge signal is the best place to fasten.
When to use a deeper scan mode
Deeper modes are intended for thicker wall coverings or targets farther behind the surface, not as an automatic upgrade for every scan. Zircon specifies up to ¾ inch in standard Stud Scan and up to 1½ inches in DeepScan for the cited models. Those limits are conditional manufacturer specifications: moisture, wall contents, texture, and paint can affect performance. Zircon warns that DeepScan on ordinary-thickness walls can make a stud appear wider or produce false readings. Use it when the wall or target depth calls for it, and return to standard mode for typical drywall.

- EASY TO USE: The StudBuddy is the world's simplest magnetic stud finder tool. The StudBuddy works with all drywall construction by using powerful magnets to locate the screws in the studs.
- MADE IN THE USA: The StudBuddy magnet stud finder tool is proudly made right here in the USA from high quality, durable materials.
- NOT INTENDED FOR USE ON LATH & PLASTER WALLS: The StudBuddy is best used as a wall stud finder for drywall and wood.
- HOW IT WORKS: Drywall is hung to wood or metal studs using screws or nails. The StudBuddy utilizes super-strong neodymium magnets to detect those screw/nail heads as you run the studfinder across your wall. When a screw or nail head is detected, The StudBuddy stud finder level "sticks" to the wall, pointing you to the exact location of these studs.
- NO BATTERIES NEEDED: With the StudBuddy stud finder magnet there are no batteries or moving parts to worry about. The StudBuddy is always ready to work with no need for calibration as with other stud finders & scanners!
How to find and confirm a stud
- Prepare the detector. Follow the instructions for your model. Zircon advises placing the tool flat against the wall to calibrate before scanning.
- Scan slowly and mark the signal. Move across the wall at a steady pace. With an edge finder, mark each edge and identify the midpoint; with a center finder, mark the indicated center and, where available, the edges.
- Repeat at other heights. Scan at several heights and compare the locations. Consistent readings along a vertical line are more useful than a single signal. Zircon recommends marking every target indicated at different heights as part of “mapping the wall.” Zircon’s stud-finder scanning guidance.
- Use spacing only as a cross-check. Studs are commonly placed at 16- or 24-inch intervals, according to Zircon, but spacing is an estimate—not confirmation that a detected location is framing.
- Choose the scan mode for the wall. Use a deeper mode only when wall thickness or target depth makes it appropriate; on a standard wall, the wider or false signal it can produce may make the target less clear.
- Assess hazards before penetrating the surface. A stud finder’s wire alert is not proof that a location is free of wiring or pipes. Franklin Sensors directs users to turn off electrical power and gas and water supplies before penetrating a surface. Follow the detector’s safety directions and take appropriate precautions for the work.
Why readings can be confusing
- Wall texture or irregularities: Uneven surfaces can interfere with a steady scan or trigger signals.
- Moisture, paint, and wall contents: These can change how well a detector senses a target and can reduce stated scan depth or accuracy.
- Foil-backed insulation or metallic wallpaper: Metal layers can confuse readings.
- Pipes, wires, or other concealed objects: They may create signals that resemble or interfere with a framing reading.
- Deep mode on a standard wall: Zircon warns it may produce an overly wide or false reading.
If readings do not repeat consistently, do not treat the first signal as confirmation. Recalibrate as instructed, scan slowly at different heights, and compare the results before deciding where to drill.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a detector cannot guarantee
A detector may miss hidden objects, and a live-wire alert has limits. Zircon’s cited models specify a warning for live, unshielded wires up to 2 inches, but that is not a guarantee that all wiring will be detected. Franklin Sensors states in its ProSensor X995 instructions: “WARNING: This product may not detect all live wires or all hidden objects.” Do not rely on a stud finder alone to declare a drilling location safe.
