For a large facility, compare a compatible scrubber-dryer that applies solution, agitates soil and recovers dirty water during the pass. For a home or a smaller area, a compact floor machine may be more practical. No independent comparative testing here establishes one model as best for every stone floor, so confirm that the machine, brush or pad, and cleaner suit your exact surface.
What a stone-floor cleaning machine does
A floor scrubber applies cleaning solution and agitates soil with a brush or pad. A scrubber-dryer can also vacuum up the dirty solution, cleaning and drying a hard floor in one pass. Nilfisk lists natural stone, including marble and granite, among compatible hard-floor types; compatibility still depends on the specific machine and its accessories. Nilfisk’s floor scrubber FAQ describes the scrubber-dryer workflow.
Not every setup recovers dirty water as it cleans. A separate wet/dry vacuum can be useful when a two-step workflow is appropriate—for example, applying and agitating solution first, then recovering it separately. LATICRETE STONETECH’s care instructions note the usefulness of wet/dry vacuums on large floors.
Choose by floor size and layout
Homes and smaller areas
A compact domestic machine is easier to justify for a home or a relatively small floor than a commercial scrubber-dryer. Kleanstone describes its Kara as a compact domestic machine for floor cleaning, polishing and buffing, and its Atlantic as a larger machine for larger homes. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance findings; check current specifications, stone compatibility and availability before buying. Large floors and commercial settings
For commercial natural-stone floors, Kärcher says commercial scrubbing equipment may become more cost-effective than manual methods at around 1,000 square feet, depending on the floor’s size and layout. Treat that figure as Kärcher’s guidance, not a universal cutoff: obstacles, room shape, cleaning frequency and machine access can change the calculation. Kärcher’s US natural-stone guidance provides the qualification.
In a commercial setting, compare scrubber-dryers from manufacturers such as Kärcher and Nilfisk against the area, layout and task. Check the exact model’s approved floor types, head and accessory options, and dirty-water recovery method rather than assuming every machine from a manufacturer fits every stone floor.

Match the brush or pad to the stone’s texture and finish
Head design matters because a tool suited to smooth stone may not clean textured stone effectively. Kärcher describes cylindrical roller technology as useful on textured stone, where brushes can reach grooves and grout lines. Smooth or polished floors may call for a different brush or pad. Daltile advises using soft brushes for machine cleaning; follow the stone and machine instructions when choosing bristle stiffness and pressure.
- Textured or cleft stone: Consider a compatible roller brush that can work into surface grooves and grout lines.
- Smooth or polished stone: Check which brush or pad the machine maker permits for that finish; do not assume a more aggressive tool cleans better.
- Replacement accessories: Verify that a soft brush, roller brush or stone-floor pad is designed for the exact machine and suitable for the specific floor.

Use stone-safe cleaning chemistry
Marble, limestone and travertine are acid-sensitive. Avoid treating an acidic cleaner as a general-purpose solution for stone floors: an unsuitable cleaner or method can damage a sensitive surface. Choose a gentle product formulated for stone, marble or grout, and check its label against the floor material and finish. Follow the cleaner’s directions and the machine manufacturer’s instructions. Kärcher discusses the care required for natural stone, while LATICRETE STONETECH recommends gentle cleaners formulated for stone, marble or grout.
Keep routine cleaning separate from restoration
A routine scrubber is for soil removal, not automatically for restoring a worn or dull polished finish. Kärcher describes diamond-pad processes for restoring polished stone. That is a specialist restoration method, not a default daily-cleaning recommendation; use it only when the floor’s condition and the applicable product and machine guidance call for it.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the stone and whether its surface is polished, smooth, textured or cleft.
- Measure the area and consider the layout, obstacles and access—not floor area alone.
- Decide whether the job is routine cleaning or a separate restoration task.
- Choose a domestic or commercial machine class that fits the space and workload.
- Confirm the machine supports the floor and the required brush, roller or pad.
- Determine whether dirty water is recovered during the pass or whether your workflow needs a separate wet/dry vacuum.
- Check the cleaner label and machine instructions for compatibility with the exact stone and finish.
