For a small lawn and careful edging, choose the compact STIHL FSA 50. For frequent suburban trimming or a wider cut, the FSA 70 R is the stronger homeowner option. Larger or professional workloads may justify an AP System model such as the FSA 120 R or FSA 135 series. These recommendations are based on STIHL’s published specifications and stated use cases, not hands-on testing. Here, “electric” means cordless battery-powered; STIHL also sells a corded electric trimmer.
Which STIHL battery trimmer is best for a small yard?
The FSA 50 is the most natural fit for a homeowner prioritizing maneuverability and clean lawn edges. STIHL describes it as a lightweight battery trimmer that quickly converts to an edger. Its telescoping shaft, adjustable mowing head and flexible spacer help adapt the tool to the user and to trimming around landscape features. STIHL’s 2025 comparison chart lists a 12-inch cutting width and 6.6-pound weight.
For a small yard with more frequent trimming or thicker grass, consider the FSA 70 R. Its 16-inch cutting width can cover more ground per pass than the FSA 50, while its published 7.7-pound weight is higher. STIHL positions it for frequent suburban yard work and lists 1 kW power consumption, two power levels with variable speed, an adjustable loop handle and a Rapid Click head-removal system.
What is the difference between the STIHL FSA 50 and FSA 70 R?
| Model | Published weight | Cutting width | Notable features and fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSA 50 | 6.6 lb, per STIHL’s 2025 comparison chart | 12 in, per STIHL’s 2025 comparison chart | AK System; telescoping shaft, adjustable head, flexible spacer, and quick conversion to edger. A compact homeowner and edging choice. |
| FSA 70 R | 7.7 lb, per STIHL’s 2025 comparison chart | 16 in, per STIHL’s 2025 comparison chart | AK System; 1 kW power consumption, two power levels with variable speed, adjustable loop handle and Rapid Click head removal. STIHL positions it for frequent suburban yard work. |
The practical choice is between the FSA 50’s lighter, narrower setup and the FSA 70 R’s wider cut and higher stated power consumption. A wider cut is useful for open stretches, while a smaller cutting width and edging features can make detail work easier. Neither specification alone guarantees a particular result in dense vegetation; match the tool to the grass, obstacles and frequency of use.

Which other STIHL models are worth considering?
FSA 60 R: a midrange option if available
The FSA 60 R is a lighter midrange alternative where dealers still carry it. STIHL lists a 36 V AK System tool with a 13.8-inch cutting width and estimates up to 25 minutes of runtime with an AK 20 battery; the company says runtime varies by application. Check current local availability before choosing it over a current model.
FSA 80 and FSA 80 R: higher-output AK choices
The FSA 80 and FSA 80 R are step-up options within STIHL’s AK battery family. STIHL’s 2025 catalog described the FSA 80 R as the most powerful AK loop-handle trimmer at that time, with a brushless motor and approximately 1.03 kW power input. That is a dated catalog comparison, not a guarantee that it remains the most powerful AK model in the current lineup. Check current specifications when comparing models.

- High Adaptability - DEWALT universal attachment capability to accept additional tool pieces
- Flexible Operation - 15 in./17 in. adjustable swath with 0.080 in. dual line (also works with DEWALT 0.095 in. line)
- Quick-load spool for convenient and efficient re-spooling
- Optimize power and runtime with variable trigger and hi/lo speed control
- Trim more in less time with high-performance brushless motor
FSA 120 R: for heavier or professional-style workloads
The FSA 120 R uses STIHL’s AP System and is positioned for professional and prosumer work. STIHL lists 1.03 kW power consumption and two-level variable-speed control. It may make sense for larger workloads or for someone already using AP batteries, but buying for maximum power alone can mean paying for capacity a small yard does not need.
FSA 135 and FSA 135 R: professional options
STIHL positions the FSA 135 models for professional landscapers and larger areas. The straight-handle FSA 135 and loop-handle FSA 135 R are distinct configurations, so compare handling preference, weight, cutting attachments and battery requirements rather than treating them as interchangeable. Both are AP System choices; confirm the required battery and the exact contents of the model or kit being sold.

How should you match a trimmer to the yard?
- Small lawn, frequent edging or many obstacles: Favor maneuverability and edging or obstacle-control features, making the FSA 50 a sensible starting point.
- Regular suburban maintenance or a wider lawn: The FSA 70 R’s wider cutting width and variable-speed control make it a stronger homeowner candidate.
- Thicker growth or a larger workload: Consider a higher-output model such as the FSA 80 family, while checking current specifications and whether the tool suits the vegetation.
- Extensive or professional work: AP System models such as the FSA 120 R or FSA 135 series may fit, especially if you already own compatible batteries.
- Work around beds, trees and hardscape: Handle comfort, tool balance, adjustable head or spacer features, and control at lower speed may matter as much as cutting width.
STIHL’s battery trimmer comparison chart lists specifications such as weight and cutting width. Use those numbers to narrow the choice, then consider how often you trim, what you cut and how much maneuvering the yard requires.
Does a STIHL trimmer come with a battery and charger?
It depends on the exact model configuration. STIHL shows an FSA 70 R set that includes an AK 20 battery and AL 101 charger, but other variants may be sold as tool-only. Before purchase, confirm the listing’s bundle contents and that the battery belongs to the right system: AK and AP are separate STIHL platforms, so verify compatibility for the specific tool and battery.

Runtime depends on the model, battery and application; it is not a fixed promise for every yard. STIHL’s battery charts provide tool-and-battery runtime and working-range estimates, and warn that actual performance varies with use and application. For example, STIHL states up to 25 minutes for the FSA 60 R with an AK 20, with runtime varying by application. Treat the chart as an estimate for planning, not a guaranteed continuous runtime.

What should you know about older STIHL trimmers?
The FSA 57 appears in older catalogs and manuals, but STIHL’s AK battery chart marks it discontinued. The FSA 86 R also appears in older sources. If considering either used or remaining dealer stock, verify local availability, compatible batteries, parts and service rather than assuming it is a current-lineup recommendation.
Specifications, bundle contents, runtime estimates and dealer availability can change. For a current purchase, compare the exact model and kit at an authorized STIHL dealer before deciding.
