The best steamer insert is the one that fits your pot securely and suits the food you want to cook. Manufacturer specifications identify useful options—from perforated baskets for steaming to unperforated inserts for cooking with stock—but do not establish a universal best or a tested performance ranking. Start with cookware compatibility, then compare construction, supports, secondary uses, and care.
How to choose a steamer insert
- Measure the pot. Check the usable interior diameter and how an insert is designed to sit on or inside the rim. ZWILLING advises choosing an insert that fits the pot’s diameter: ZWILLING’s pot steamer insert guidance.
- Confirm specific compatibility. A listed size or cookware match is more useful than a broad “fits most pots” claim. For example, Meyer lists compatible cookware and excludes its Small Stockpot; Le Creuset’s UK page specifies a 20 cm insert for corresponding 20 cm cookware.
- Choose the right construction. Perforated baskets let steam pass through while holding food above the cooking liquid. An unperforated insert can be intended for cooking food with stock or sauce; pasta inserts are used with boiling water and lifted out to drain.
- Check supports, stacking, and care. Confirm whether a tripod is included, whether inserts can be stacked, and whether the specific product is dishwasher-safe.
These are selection criteria, not a performance test. The manufacturer pages cited here give product specifications and intended uses, not independent side-by-side results.
What can you cook in an insert?
Manufacturer guidance describes insert or steaming uses for vegetables, grains, fish, meat, potatoes, dumplings, and pasta. Match the insert to the method: a perforated basket is for holding food above the liquid, while pasta inserts are designed to be used with boiling water. These intended uses do not establish a particular nutritional or taste outcome.

Steamer basket, pasta insert, or cooking insert?
- Perforated steamer basket: choose this when food should sit above the liquid as steam passes through the holes.
- Pasta insert: use with enough boiling water for the pasta to contact it, then lift the insert to drain.
- Unperforated cooking insert: consider this for preparations with stock or sauce, where the intended method is not steaming through holes.
Some products also serve as strainers or colanders, but that secondary feature does not change the need to match the insert’s size to its cookware.
Checks before buying
- Measure the pot’s usable inside diameter rather than relying on its nominal capacity.
- Look for compatibility with the exact pot, pan, or pressure cooker; brand and collection names can matter.
- Confirm whether the insert rests on the rim or sits inside the cookware, and whether it comes with a tripod or other support if needed.
- For stacking, verify the manufacturer’s stated limit. Le Creuset specifies up to two inserts for the cited model.
- Read the care guidance for the exact product. Dishwasher-safe claims should not be assumed for other models or materials.
No reviewed manufacturer page establishes that a flexible or adjustable basket fits every pot. Treat universal-fit language cautiously and verify dimensions and support before use.
