The right standby diesel generator for a home depends on which appliances must run together, the installation site, fuel storage, local rules, and access to qualified service—not on a “best” label alone. Generac’s Protector Series RD01525 is a documented residential-scale example: its manufacturer lists a 15 kW rating and 15,000 running watts. That makes it a useful model to evaluate, not a proven winner or a fit for every house.
Which standby diesel generators are relevant to a home?
The available manufacturer information supports a limited comparison, not an independent ranking. Generac lists two Protector Series diesel options at different capacities; a Cummins diesel set in the cited product range is substantially larger.

| Generac Protector Series RD01525 | 15 kW, 1800 rpm, diesel, and 15,000 running watts. The product page also lists weekly Quiet-Test, remote monitoring through Mobile Link, and a five-year limited warranty. | A residential-scale example. Confirm current specifications, sizing, compatibility, and local service. These listed features do not establish independent performance or reliability superiority. Generac RD01525 product page. |
| Generac Protector Series RA03022L | 30 kW diesel with an extended-tank option. Generac states full-load runtime of “2+ days” for that configuration. | More output and the stated runtime do not make it a better fit for a typical home. Verify the exact configuration, tank and site requirements, and current specifications. Generac RA03022L product page. |
| Cummins QSB7-G5 | The product page lists a 125–200 kW standby rating and includes “Residential Home Standby” among its applications. | This is a much larger generator set than the cited 15 kW example, not a like-for-like home alternative. Cummins QSB7-G5 product page. |
Manufacturer specifications describe products; they are not comparative independent tests. No verified current purchase price or independent head-to-head result is established for these examples.
What size diesel generator do I need for my home?
Size the system around the loads you need to operate at the same time. Square footage alone cannot tell you whether a generator can handle a home’s heating or cooling equipment, well or sump pumps, kitchen appliances, laundry, or other large loads. Cummins’ home standby guidance considers home area and selected equipment, and describes its calculator as an initial estimate; it says an in-home assessment is the better way to determine actual needs. See Cummins home standby generators.

- List essential circuits and equipment. Include heating and cooling, pumps, kitchen appliances, laundry, and any other loads you expect to use during an outage.
- Identify what must run together. Note motor-starting loads as well as normal operation; ask a qualified professional to account for both when sizing.
- Decide what can be shed. If you can defer or turn off some equipment during an outage, tell the installer. That choice can change the system required.
- Get an in-home assessment. Have a generator professional evaluate the actual electrical service, loads, transfer equipment, fuel plan, and proposed site before choosing capacity.
Can a diesel generator power a whole house?
It can supply a home’s connected loads only if the generator and the rest of the installed system are sized and configured for them. “Whole house” is not a capacity specification: a system intended to back up selected essentials may be smaller than one expected to handle multiple large appliances simultaneously. Have the professional specify which circuits are backed up and whether any loads need to be managed or shed.
Do I need an automatic transfer switch?
A standby system uses transfer equipment to keep generator power separated from utility power. An automatic transfer switch detects a utility interruption, disconnects the home from the grid, and connects the generator supply; when utility service returns, it transfers the home back. Its rating and compatibility must suit the generator and the home’s electrical service. Cummins describes this operating sequence in its home standby guidance.

How long will a home diesel standby generator run?
Runtime depends on the specific generator and fuel-tank configuration, the load, and operating conditions. Generac states that the RA03022L extended-tank option has a full-load runtime of “2+ days.” Treat that as the manufacturer’s claim for that particular configuration, not a general runtime benchmark for diesel generators or a prediction for a different load or model. Ask the installer for runtime information tied to the exact configuration and expected operating load.
What should you check before choosing a model?
Compare the complete system—not just the generator’s headline kilowatt rating. Ask for model-specific documentation or a written quote covering the factors that affect whether it will work at your home:

A standby generator is a permanent installation, not simply a generator purchase. Site preparation, electrical work, fuel storage and piping, exhaust and ventilation, permits, and commissioning all affect suitability. The correct clearances, emissions rules, and approval process vary by model and location, so there is no universal site rule to apply without checking the installation manual and local authority requirements.

Generac’s home standby FAQ recommends using an authorized dealer or licensed contractor for safety and code adherence; Cummins likewise directs buyers toward authorized dealers and an in-home assessment. Generac’s FAQ describes its standard residential home standby models as using natural gas or propane, but that statement does not apply to every product it sells: the separate Protector Series pages document diesel models. See Generac home standby FAQ.
How to make a practical choice
For a homeowner considering diesel, RD01525 is the clearest residential-scale product example among these cited options, but the evidence does not establish it as the best-performing or most reliable model on the market. Treat it as a candidate for professional load assessment. Consider a different capacity only after the same assessment, and weigh service access, fuel and site requirements, installation scope, and documented warranty and maintenance terms alongside output.
