If you want a stainless steel pressure cooker, check the material of the food-contact inner pot—not just the cooker’s exterior. The available product details here document one electric example, the Instant Pot Duo 6QT, but do not establish a cross-brand winner or independent cooking-performance results. Use the guide below to compare the features that matter and verify the model-specific details before buying.
What “stainless steel” should mean
Look for stainless steel in the inner pot, where food sits. A stainless exterior alone does not establish the material of the cooking surface. Instant Pot says the Duo 6QT’s inner pot is food-grade 304 (18/8) stainless steel without a chemical coating, and its product page describes a tri-ply bottom. Those are manufacturer claims about this model, not a specification that applies to other cookers. Check the Instant Pot Duo 6QT listing for its current product details.
How to compare pressure cookers
First decide whether you want an electric multi-cooker or a stovetop pressure cooker. An electric model uses its own heating element and needs a compatible electrical supply; a stovetop model is heated on a range. The documented example below is electric, so its wattage and voltage are not specifications for stovetop cookers.
- Inner pot: Confirm the food-contact material, stated grade, and whether the base is described as layered or tri-ply.
- Capacity and fill limits: Compare nominal pot volume, but also consult the cooker’s markings and manual for safe fill levels.
- Release controls and safety features: Check how steam is released, what prevents opening under pressure, and whether instructions explain safe operation.
- Useful functions: Focus on cooking modes you will use. A larger number of presets does not demonstrate better cooking performance.
- Power and region: For electric cookers, match voltage and electrical compatibility to your location.
- Care and accessories: Verify which parts are dishwasher-safe, what accessories are included, and whether replacement pots fit your exact model.
- Current support details: Check the model-specific manual and warranty information for your region before purchase.
Instant Pot’s multi-cooker comparison page shows that features vary across its models, including release controls and inner-pot designs. That comparison is useful for identifying differences, but it does not establish which cooker performs best.

A documented electric example: Instant Pot Duo 6QT
The Duo 6QT is a manufacturer-documented example of an electric pressure cooker with a stainless-steel inner pot; it is not an independently tested or comparative winner. Instant Pot lists the following specifications on its product page:
| Feature | Manufacturer-listed detail |
|---|---|
| Capacity and inner pot | 6 quarts; 18/8 stainless steel with a tri-ply bottom |
| Functions | Seven: pressure cook, slow cook, sauté, steam, rice, yogurt, and keep warm |
| One-touch options | Thirteen |
| Electrical rating | 1000 watts, 120 volts |
| Safety and listing | UL and ULC listing; more than 10 safety mechanisms, including overheat protection and an easy-seal lid lock |
| Care and included accessory | Dishwasher-safe lid and inner pot; stainless-steel steamer rack included |
These details are manufacturer-stated specifications, not results from comparative testing. The listing’s “up to 70% faster” language is a manufacturer marketing comparison with traditional slow-cooking methods, not an independently measured result. Confirm the current listing and regional electrical requirements before purchase.

Capacity is not the safe fill amount
Instant Pot explains that the advertised quart size refers to the inner pot’s complete volume. Its FAQ instructs users of its cookers not to fill past the half marker when cooking starchy or expanding foods such as beans, pasta, grains, rice, porridge, or soup. For other recipes, follow the pressure-cooking limit marked on the cooker. The exact model’s markings and manual govern; do not assume another brand uses the same limits. Read Instant Pot’s FAQ for its guidance.
Safe operation and model-specific instructions
Instant Pot warns: “NEVER force the lid open after pressure cooking.” Wait until pressure has been released and the cooker indicates it is safe to open; keep your face, hands, and exposed skin away from the steam release and float valve. Instant Pot also cautions that “Hot liquid can build up pressure in the pot.” These are the manufacturer’s instructions for its products, not a substitute for the manual supplied for another cooker.

Choosing a replacement inner pot
Replacement pots are not automatically interchangeable across capacities and model generations. Instant Pot lists its standard 6QT inner pot as fitting most of its 6-quart multi-use cookers, while its Evo-series pot has a narrower compatibility list. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility details and your cooker’s exact model before ordering:

What the available specifications do—and do not—show
The documented Duo example provides a concrete set of material, capacity, electrical, function, and care details. It does not establish how the cooker compares with other brands in cooking results, ease of use, durability, or value. For a genuine shortlist, compare current model-specific information on the same criteria and look for independent testing before treating any product as “best.”
