Measure the shelf or rack and the bin’s usable interior, then choose a format—lidded box, open-front bin, industrial container, or task-specific organizer—that suits the contents and environment. Stackability is product-specific, so verify the exact model’s dimensions and compatibility rather than assuming bins from different lines will fit together.
Start with the space and the items you need to store
Measure the available footprint and height, including any shelf, rack, doorway, or clearance constraint. Then check the container’s interior dimensions. Exterior dimensions tell you how much space the bin occupies; they do not guarantee that a rigid item will fit inside, especially where the sides taper.
For example, Sterilite lists its 16 Qt Modular Stacker Box, model 1472, at 18 × 12 5/8 × 7 1/8 inches outside, but its bottom interior dimensions are 13 1/4 × 9 7/8 × 6 3/4 inches. Those are different measurements of the same box, so compare an item against the interior clearance, not the outside footprint. Sterilite’s model 1472 specifications provide both sets of dimensions.
Choose the access style for the job
Lidded boxes for covered storage
A lidded box is useful when contents should be covered and the container will be handled as a unit. Sterilite’s model 1472 has latches and a recessed lid designed for stacking. Its manufacturer says the 16 Qt and 30 Qt Stacker Boxes share the same-size lid and footprint, and lists compatibility with specified Stacker Totes. This is compatibility within the documented product family—not a promise that other brands or unrelated Sterilite lines will stack securely. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility details before mixing models.

Open-front bins for frequently used parts
Open-front bins keep contents visible and reachable without removing a lid or unstacking a tower. They can suit workshops, garages, and parts storage where frequent access matters more than concealment. Task-specific formats
A purpose-built organizer may solve a problem better than a general tote. Brabantia’s Stackable Laundry Box is a fabric laundry sorter with front and top openings; it stacks and folds flat. The manufacturer lists a 35-litre capacity, dimensions of 44.5 × 37 × 32 cm, and a two-year warranty. It is designed for laundry handling, not as a substitute for a rigid lidded box. Confirm the stacking interface
Look for explicit compatibility information for the exact products you intend to combine. Sterilite documents a shared lid footprint for particular Stacker Box sizes and specified Stacker Totes; that does not establish compatibility with unrelated containers. If a bin will sit on a rack, compare its outside dimensions with the rack’s usable width and depth as well as its stacking interface.

Follow model-specific load guidance
Sterilite’s instruction for the cited box is to “Use good judgment when stacking items, keep heaviest bin at the bottom.” Its product page does not state a maximum stack height or load rating. For industrial containers, supplier-published capacities vary by product and size, so check the exact model before using a container in a load-bearing setup.
Decide whether empty containers must nest
A stackable bin is not necessarily a stack-and-nest tote. Material Handling USA describes rotating empty totes so they nest inside one another, reducing the space they occupy in storage or return. If you need to store empties compactly, confirm that the product is specifically designed to nest; ordinary stackable containers may not do so. The supplier’s product information describes its container families.

A practical selection checklist
- Measure the available shelf, rack, or floor area and the maximum height.
- Compare bulky or rigid contents with the bin’s interior dimensions, not only its outside measurements.
- Choose lids for covered storage, open fronts for frequent retrieval, or a specialized design for a dedicated task.
- Verify that the exact models have a documented compatible stacking interface.
- For industrial or load-bearing use, rely on the precise model’s capacity and mounting specifications, not a general family maximum.
- If empty containers need to take up less room, select a stack-and-nest design rather than assuming a stackable bin will nest.
