The best Spectracide weed killer for a yard depends on the weed you need to control and the grass you want to keep. For many common lawn weeds, consider Weed Stop For Lawns; for crabgrass, compare the separate Plus Crabgrass Killer; and for St. Augustine or centipede grass, look at the formula labeled specifically for those lawns. Check the exact product label before applying: the formulas and directions are not interchangeable.
Spectracide’s product pages support a label-based comparison, not an independent performance ranking. The choice below turns on target weeds, compatible turf, application format, and label restrictions.
How to choose a Spectracide lawn weed killer
- Identify your grass. Confirm the turf species before selecting a product. A formula suitable for one lawn may not be labeled for another.
- Identify the weed. Decide whether you are targeting common broadleaf weeds, crabgrass, or another listed weed. Check that weed against the product’s own label.
- Choose the matching formula. Compare general Weed Stop, the separate Plus Crabgrass Killer, and the St. Augustine & Centipede formula where appropriate.
- Choose the package format. Concentrate requires dilution; ready-to-spray connects to a hose; ready-to-use products are a different format. Follow the directions for the exact package you buy.
Product availability and labeling can vary. Use the current package label and confirm local rules before treating your lawn.
Which Spectracide product fits your lawn?
| Product | Best fit to consider | Format and label details |
|---|---|---|
| Weed Stop For Lawns Concentrate₂ | Listed common lawn weeds when your turf is among the compatible grasses. | Dilutable concentrate. Spectracide says it controls more than 460 listed weeds, including dandelion, chickweed, clover, and yellow nutsedge. That number is a manufacturer claim, not independent efficacy evidence. The page names bluegrass, fescue, Bermuda, perennial ryegrass, and zoysia, but says not to apply to zoysia just emerging from dormancy. |
| Weed Stop For Lawns Ready-to-Spray | Readers seeking a hose-connected format for the general Weed Stop product family. | Uses a hose-connected QuickFlip sprayer. Check this product’s own package label for directions and restrictions rather than transferring instructions from the concentrate. |
| Weed Stop for St. Augustine & Centipede Lawns | St. Augustine or centipede grass, subject to the exact label. | A separate formula listing atrazine as its active ingredient. Spectracide says to apply below 90°F. Consult the full label for other conditions and directions. |
| Weed Stop For Lawns Plus Crabgrass Killer Concentrate | Lawns where crabgrass is among the target weeds, if the turf is permitted by the label. | A separate concentrate with 2,4-D, quinclorac, dicamba, and sulfentrazone as listed active ingredients. Its restrictions differ from general Weed Stop; review the exact label. |
| Weed Stop For Lawns Plus Crabgrass Killer Ready-to-Spray | Crabgrass-targeting option in a ready-to-spray format, when permitted for your lawn. | A distinct ready-to-spray product. Follow its own label; do not assume its directions match the concentrate. |
General Weed Stop concentrate: common weeds, with timing limits
The concentrate’s listed active ingredients are 2,4-D dimethylamine salt, mecoprop-p dimethylamine salt, dicamba dimethylamine salt, and sulfentrazone. Spectracide describes a 45–90°F application range and warns of possible lawn damage above 90°F. Its page also cautions against treating drought-stressed lawns and newly seeded grass before it is established or before the third mowing.
#1 Best Overall
- KILLS WEEDS AND GRASSES: Use on driveways and walkways, and around fences, trees, flower beds, shrubs and other listed areas
- ACCUSHOT SPRAYER: Includes continuous power sprayer with extendable wand
- KILLS THE ROOT: Visible results as fast as 3 hours — replant new flowers, trees and shrubs the same weekend
- RAINFAST: Rainfall or watering 15 minutes after application will not wash away effectiveness
The manufacturer further says to keep people and pets away during application and until sprays dry, prevent drift onto desirable plants, and observe the product’s repeat-treatment interval. Consult the package label for the exact interval and all application directions; these cautions apply to this product, not automatically to other Spectracide formulas.
Crabgrass or sensitive turf calls for a different label
When crabgrass is the target
Weed Stop For Lawns Plus Crabgrass Killer is a separate product, not simply the general formula in another bottle. Its active ingredients and restrictions differ. Check the current label for your grass type, listed weeds, application timing, and any limits on repeat treatment before choosing either its concentrate or ready-to-spray version.
Rank #2
- KILLS WEEDS – NOT THE LAWN: When used as directed
- VISIBLE RESULTS IN 5 HOURS: Conquer unruly weeds and see visible results in as fast as 5 hours
- KILLS 470+ WEED TYPES AS LISTED: Kills broadleaf and grassy weeds including dandelion, chickweed and clover as well as crabgrass and yellow nutsedge – see product label for complete list of weed types
- KILLS THE ROOT: Kills weeds by contact down to the root
- READY-TO-USE FORMULA: No mixing required
For St. Augustine or centipede lawns
Spectracide lists a distinct Weed Stop formula for these turf types. Its page identifies atrazine and says to apply below 90°F. Treat it as a turf-specific candidate, then use the complete label to determine whether your lawn and target weed qualify.
Do not use non-selective Weed & Grass Killer on lawn weeds
Spectracide describes Weed & Grass Killer as a spot-treatment product and says it is not recommended for spot weed treatment in established lawns because it will also kill lawn grasses. It is not a substitute for a selective lawn weed-control product.
Rank #3
- KILLS 460+ WEEDS AS LISTED: Kills all types of listed broadleaf weeds including dandelion, chickweed, clover and yellow nutsedge.
- VISIBLE RESULTS: This product will give you visible results in 3 hours.
- KILLS BY CONTACT: Spectracide Weed Stop For Lawns Concentrate2 kills by contact and kills weed roots.
- WHERE TO USE: Use this product on lawns – treats bluegrass, fescue, zoysia, Bermuda and perennial ryegrass.
- Do not apply to zoysiagrass just emerging from dormancy.
Read the label before treating
For the general concentrate, Spectracide’s product page reproduces this label statement: “It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.” Use the current label on your specific package for directions, turf limits, protective measures, reapplication, and reseeding intervals. Do not carry an instruction from one formula or package format over to another.
