A freestanding room divider can absorb some reflected sound and make a workspace feel quieter, but it will not reliably soundproof one room from another. If you want less echo, choose an absorptive screen; if you need voices to stay on one side of a partition, look at an installed system with documented transmission ratings and sealed edges. The products below serve different purposes, so there is no defensible universal “best.”
First decide what “quieter” needs to mean
- Less echo in one room: An absorptive divider may reduce reflected sound and make speech or other noise feel less harsh.
- A more focused workspace: A freestanding partition can create visual separation and absorb some sound, but voices can travel around, over, and under it.
- Speech privacy between rooms: A portable screen is not a substitute for a partition designed and installed to limit sound transmission. Look for a documented rating for the complete system, including its seals and configuration.
Two commonly cited ratings answer different questions. NRC describes sound absorption; STC and Rw are used to describe sound transmission through a building element or system. Their numbers are not interchangeable, and an NRC value does not tell you how much speech will be blocked from reaching the next room.
Portable dividers for absorption and flexible layouts
These options are most relevant when you want a movable visual boundary and some help with reflected sound. The figures below are manufacturers’ published claims, not results from an independent head-to-head test.
Versare VersiPanel: a fixed freestanding screen
Versare describes the VersiPanel as having acoustic-ribbed fabric, a heavy foam core, and floor contact across the full width. The manufacturer lists an NRC rating of “up to 0.77”; that is a maximum claim, not a guarantee that every size or configuration achieves the figure. See Versare’s VersiPanel product page.

Consider this style if you want a freestanding boundary that stays in place rather than a screen designed to fold away. Full-width floor contact is a construction detail, not proof of room-to-room sound isolation.
Versare VersiFold: folding and roll-away flexibility
Versare says the VersiFold has acoustic-ribbed fabric and a dense foam core, folds and rolls away, connects magnetically, and contacts the floor across its width. The company describes its NRC as “up to 0.77” on the product page; treat that as the vendor’s claim rather than a verified result across configurations. Versare’s VersiFold page also says optional VersiFoot stabilizers are sold separately. Check exact model compatibility and the product listing before ordering feet.

Its folding and connection features make it a more adaptable choice for changing layouts, but mobility does not make it a soundproof wall. Check stability and storage needs alongside the acoustic claim.
Installed systems for room-to-room separation
When speech privacy is the goal, compare complete installed systems rather than freestanding screens. Ratings apply to particular system options or configurations; confirm that the tested or published configuration matches the proposed opening, track, seals, and installation.

Skyfold Zenith
Skyfold lists Zenith installed-system options with STC ratings of 48, 51, 55, and 60, plus an NRC option “up to 0.65.” These are manufacturer-published options for installed systems, not a direct comparison with the NRC figures for portable screens. Ask which configuration, seals, and installation conditions support the rating for your project. See Skyfold’s Zenith product information.
Type 100 commercial partition
The manufacturer lists a thickness of 100 mm and “up to STC 50” for its Type 100 partition. The page’s other noise-reduction wording does not provide enough measurement context to interpret alongside that specification, so rely on the stated STC claim only after confirming the tested assembly and project configuration with the supplier. Commercial Soundproof Dividers
This manufacturer claims ratings up to Rw 50 dB and describes automated top and floor seals, with built-in absorption available as an option. These are vendor claims; request the supporting test documentation and verify what seals, dimensions, and options are included in the rated system. See Soundproof Dividers’ product information.

Hanging or modular acoustic panels can be useful when the main problem is reflected sound, but an absorption rating alone does not establish speech isolation. Egan reports NRC 0.70 for its hanging PET acoustic divider, while Luxor reports NRC-rated modular wall panels above 0.85. How to choose for a real space
If you need a movable screen
- Check the panel dimensions and whether its height and width suit the area you need to screen.
- Compare the core and facing materials, floor contact, stability, and any published acoustic rating.
- Decide whether panels need to connect, fold, roll, or store compactly; confirm whether stabilizers or other accessories cost extra.
- Plan the layout around the screen’s limits: gaps and open space above or below it allow sound to pass.
If you need speech privacy
- Ask for the rating and test documentation for the complete partition system, not just a panel material.
- Confirm that the quoted configuration includes the relevant top and floor seals, track, dimensions, and any access-door options.
- Have the supplier or an acoustics professional confirm whether the proposed assembly and installation suit the room and privacy target.
No controlled independent comparison establishes one product as the best for every room. For a flexible workspace, compare portable models on construction, floor contact, movement, storage, and vendor-published absorption data. For meaningful separation between rooms, assess an installed system on its documented system performance and project-specific detailing.
