Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you want a microwave door that closes more gently, start with the Breville Compact Wave Soft Close (BMO650), a countertop model whose manufacturer describes its door as 80% quieter. For a different installation, Midea’s MMO19S4AST is an over-the-range option with a QuietClose door, while Wolf and Smeg list soft-close action on built-in appliances. These are not interchangeable: choose by fit, ventilation and cooking needs first, then compare the door feature.
What “soft close” means—and what it does not
A soft-close door is designed to shut more gently than a conventional door. It can make the closing action less abrupt, but it does not make a microwave silent: cooking sounds, electronic beeps and, on vented models, fan noise are separate. The reviewed manufacturers describe gentler or quieter closing, not silence in every kitchen or under every use condition.
The feature is model-specific, not standard across a brand. Check the exact model page and manual before buying. For example, Siemens’ 2026–27 brochure marks soft-open but not soft-close for the listed CM585AGS1B compact oven with microwave function (Siemens product listing).
Soft-close microwave options by installation type
| Model | Format | Published specifications | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breville Compact Wave Soft Close (BMO650) | Countertop | 25 L; 19.1 × 16.4 × 11.5 inches, according to Breville’s U.S. page | One-touch Reheat, Defrost, Popcorn and Beverage functions; child lock, mute button and 30-second instant start. Regional capacity and model suffix can differ. |
| Midea MMO19S4AST | Over-the-range | 1.9 cu. ft.; 29.9 × 16.4 × 15.5 inches; 1000 W; 400 CFM airflow, according to Midea | QuietClose door; check cabinet fit, venting and installation requirements. |
| Wolf M Series MDD3050PM/S/P | 30-inch built-in drop-down | 1.6 cu. ft.; 900 W; 29 7/8 × 17 7/8 × 20 inches, according to Wolf | Soft-open and soft-close door; requires a dedicated 15 amp circuit. |
| Smeg SFU4104MCS | Built-in combi microwave oven | 1000 W effective microwave power, according to Smeg | Smeg lists a soft-close door; compare its full cooking modes and installation needs with a standalone microwave. |
Specifications above are manufacturer-published figures; check the linked model pages and installation documentation for the exact market and configuration. Breville’s U.S. page lists the BMO650 at 25 L, while its Canadian page describes the same soft-close model at 0.9 cu. ft. Confirm the regional SKU and dimensions before ordering (Breville U.S. BMO650; Breville Canada BMO650).

How to choose the right format for a kitchen project
Choose countertop for a straightforward replacement
The BMO650 is the clearest countertop match in the listed manufacturer information. Measure the counter space, allow for the required ventilation clearance in its manual, and confirm that the door can open without hitting adjacent walls or cabinetry. Its mute button addresses beeps as well as its soft-close door addressing the closing action; do not assume another model has sound controls without checking its instructions.
Choose over-the-range only when the cabinet and vent setup fit
Midea describes the MMO19S4AST’s QuietClose door as closing “gently and smoothly,” helping reduce noise and everyday wear (Midea MMO19S4AST). Its 400 CFM specification is a manufacturer-listed airflow figure, not a measure of door sound. Check the installation instructions and local venting requirements before treating it as a replacement for a countertop unit.

Consider built-in and combi models during a remodel
Wolf’s MDD3050PM/S/P is a built-in drop-down appliance, not a like-for-like countertop substitute. Wolf lists its dimensions, capacity and power on the official product page; verify the opening and electrical requirements with the installation guide and a qualified installer. Smeg’s SFU4104MCS is a combi microwave oven with soft-close action, so assess its other cooking modes and built-in requirements as part of the whole appliance decision (Smeg SFU4104MCS).
How much quieter is a soft-close door?
Breville markets the BMO650 door as “80% quieter.” That is the manufacturer’s claim; the product page does not establish a comparison method that would make it a ranking against other brands (Breville U.S. BMO650). QuietSpecs reports independent-lab readings of 81.5 dBA for the Compact Wave soft-close door and 99.6 dBA for an older Breville BMO735. The retrieved information does not establish a shared cross-brand test method, so those readings should not be used to rank Breville against Midea, Wolf or Smeg (QuietSpecs microwave sound comparison).

- SAFETY FIRST: The built-in child safety lock on the handle ensures the door doesn’t open accidentally. Just pull upwards on the top edge of the handle to open the microwave.
- MUTE OPTION: Silence this counter top microwave with the Audio Button, turning off any annoying beeps if you’re trying to stay quiet or not wake up your kids.
Door-close sound is only one part of everyday noise. If beeps are the concern, look for a specifically documented mute or sound-control function; if the concern is cooking or ventilation noise, check those separately. Breville lists a mute button on the BMO650, but the reviewed information does not establish equivalent controls for the other models.

Panasonic North America announced a Japanese Microwave design with soft-close hinges, a pull-down oven-style door, flatbed interior, inverter technology and Genius Sensor 2.0, described as sensing at 64 points. The announcement does not establish a retail model number, release date or current stock, so treat it as a design announcement rather than a confirmed product to buy (Panasonic North America announcement).
