Snap-plug terminals—also called bullet terminals—make detachable, crimped wire-to-wire connections. The best choice is the one that matches your wire gauge and insulation diameter, mates with the correct plug, and is rated for the circuit and working conditions. There is no single snap-plug terminal that fits every wire or has one universal electrical rating.
What snap-plug terminals do
A snap-plug terminal has a male or female end that mates with its counterpart, allowing a wire connection to be disconnected for service. Molex describes these as solderless wire-to-wire and harness connections; its snap-in retention feature is intended to help resist accidental separation in applications exposed to shock or vibration. Molex identifies appliance and industrial uses where serviceability matters. Molex’s snap-plug terminal overview describes the product family.
These are not interchangeable with every terminal style. Ring and spade terminals are used at studs or device connections, while quick-disconnect terminals serve different connection layouts. Choose a snap plug when a detachable male/female wire-to-wire connection is what the equipment requires.
How to choose a snap-plug terminal
Match both wire gauge and insulation diameter
Start with the conductor’s gauge and the outside diameter of its insulation. Molex lists category-level ranges of 22–14 AWG wire size and 3.25–6.71 mm insulation diameter for its snap-plug products. Those figures do not mean every part in the category accepts every combination; check the selected part’s product data for its specific wire and insulation limits. See Molex’s solderless-terminals category.

Confirm gender, fit, and dimensions
Check whether the wire needs a male plug or a female receptacle, then confirm the mating connector’s plug diameter and the exact connector family. “Bullet terminal” is a common synonym, not a dimensional standard: two products with that name are not necessarily compatible.
Choose insulation and crimp style for the application
Available options include insulated and noninsulated terminals, with sleeve materials and construction varying by product. Molex names Avikrimp (brass sleeve), InsulKrimp (rigid PVC sleeve), Krimptite (butted seam), and Perma-Seal (heat-shrink sleeve) variants. McMaster-Carr lists vinyl, nylon, noninsulated, and heat-shrink-insulated versions, as well as single- and double-crimp options. Treat these as product choices, not a ranking: use the chosen terminal’s documentation to determine which construction suits the installation.

For a heat-shrink type, McMaster-Carr describes crimping first and applying heat afterward to seal the sleeve. Follow the instructions for the specific manufacturer and part rather than assuming that sequence or any particular heat method applies universally. See McMaster-Carr’s snap-plug terminal listings and descriptions.
Verify electrical and environmental ratings
Connector shape alone does not establish suitability. Check the selected part’s published voltage, current, temperature, and other applicable ratings, along with its environmental limitations and the equipment maker’s wiring instructions. The cited sources do not establish one voltage, current, temperature, or safety certification for all snap-plug terminals.

How to crimp and check the connection
- Identify the exact terminal and wire. Confirm the part number, conductor gauge, and insulation diameter against the product documentation.
- Use compatible tooling. Select the crimping tool specified or approved for that terminal and wire range. McMaster-Carr warns that using a crimping tool helps avoid a damaged barrel and a loose connection.
- Follow the part-specific crimp instructions. Do not transfer die dimensions, crimp settings, or inspection criteria from a different terminal family. For example, Molex’s 2005 ATP tooling specification covers its Perma-Seal snap-plug terminals for 14–16 AWG and gives tooling and inspection details for that specified application; it is not a universal field guide.
- Inspect and mate the connection as directed. Use the manufacturer’s inspection criteria, then confirm that the male and female parts are the intended mating pair and seat as designed. If the crimp or fit is uncertain, do not treat the connection as ready for service.
What to compare before buying
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Wire compatibility | Supported conductor gauge and insulation outside diameter for the specific part |
| Mating fit | Male or female configuration, plug diameter, and matching connector family |
| Construction | Terminal metal, insulation material, and any environmental protection claimed for the part |
| Crimping | Single- or double-crimp construction where specified, plus approved tooling and instructions |
| Electrical suitability | Published ratings and conditions for the intended circuit, checked against equipment instructions |
Common selection mistakes
- Choosing by the name alone: “Bullet” does not guarantee a matching diameter or compatible connector family.
- Checking gauge but not insulation: A conductor may fall within a stated wire range while its insulation diameter does not suit the terminal.
- Assuming category ranges apply to every part: Confirm the specific SKU’s product data rather than treating a family-wide range as a per-part guarantee.
- Using an unverified crimper or procedure: Tooling guidance for one terminal and wire range does not establish a correct crimp for another.
- Assuming a universal rating: Select from the specific part’s published electrical and environmental ratings, not from the connector style alone.
