A sealed 10-year battery can reduce routine battery changes, but it does not eliminate testing or end-of-life replacement. The models below are feature examples—not independently tested rankings—and some have manufacturer notices about replacement or discontinuation.
What to look for in a long-life smoke alarm
Battery and power
A sealed, nonreplaceable battery is designed to power the alarm for its stated service period. NFPA says long-life alarms of this kind are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years; when one chirps to signal a low battery, replace the entire alarm rather than trying to change the sealed battery. Other battery-powered alarms generally require annual battery replacement. Check the alarm’s instructions and end-of-life date, and do not treat a 10-year battery claim as proof that the alarm will remain in service beyond its stated life. NFPA smoke-alarm safety tips

Sensor type
NFPA describes ionization alarms as generally more responsive to flaming fires and photoelectric alarms as generally more responsive to smoldering fires. It recommends both types or a dual-sensor alarm for the best protection. These are different response tendencies, not a guarantee that one sensor will detect every fire sooner. If cooking causes nuisance alarms, NFPA identifies photoelectric alarms and hush features as options; do not disable an alarm or remove its battery to stop nuisance alerts. Interconnection, placement, and certification
NFPA advises installing alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area, and describes interconnected alarms throughout the home. Before replacing an installed alarm, check whether the home requires hardwired power, whether wireless or wired interconnection is compatible with the existing system, and what local requirements apply. Confirm the product has a listing from a recognized testing laboratory and follow its installation instructions. NFPA smoke-alarm planning guide · NFPA home fire escape planning

How to choose for your home
- Start with the room and layout. Plan for alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area, then check the applicable local requirements and manufacturer placement instructions.
- Match sensing to your priorities. Consider the different response tendencies of ionization and photoelectric sensors; for both, NFPA recommends both types or a dual-sensor alarm.
- Confirm power and compatibility. Determine whether the location needs a hardwired alarm or can use a battery-powered unit. If you want alarms to sound together, verify the exact interconnect type and compatibility with the other alarms and installed wiring.
- Choose useful features. Hush controls can help address nuisance alarms without disabling protection. Voice warnings, location announcements, escape lights, visible status indicators, and easier-to-use test controls may also matter to your household; verify which features the specific model actually includes.
- Check the listing and lifecycle. Look for a recognized testing laboratory listing, read the installation manual, and note the replacement date. Verify current model status and successor details before buying, especially for models with manufacturer replacement or discontinuation notices.
Keep a long-life alarm ready to work
Test smoke alarms monthly and clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A sealed battery reduces battery-change chores, not maintenance: replace an alarm that chirps to indicate its sealed battery is low, and follow its end-of-life guidance. For alarms with replaceable batteries, follow the manufacturer’s battery-change instructions; NFPA says other battery alarms generally need a new battery annually. NFPA smoke-alarm safety tips
