For most wired homes, the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi is the best local-storage choice. It records to a microSD card, NVR, FTP/NAS destination or Home Hub, supports continuous recording, and does not require a monthly storage plan. Choose the Reolink PoE model if you can run Ethernet, Aqara G4 for Apple Home, Tapo D235 for flexible battery/wired installation, or Reolink’s Battery/2nd Gen model when wiring is not practical.

“Local storage” does not automatically mean “cloud-free.” A doorbell may save video locally while still using vendor servers for account login, push notifications, remote viewing, thumbnails, firmware updates or optional cloud backup.

Quick comparison

Model Power Where footage is stored 24/7 recording Open/NVR options Subscription required? Best for
Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi Hardwired Wi-Fi microSD (up to 256GB on the product page), NVR, FTP/NAS or Home Hub Yes, when wired and configured for compatible storage RTSP, ONVIF, FTP and NVR support No for core local recording Most wired homes
Reolink Video Doorbell PoE PoE Ethernet; documented wired alternatives microSD, NVR, Home Hub or FTP/NAS Yes RTSP, ONVIF and FTP No for core local recording Maximum reliability and self-hosting
Reolink Video Doorbell Battery/2nd Gen Battery Compatible Home Hub or Wi-Fi NVR ecosystem Generally event-based in battery operation More dependent on Reolink ecosystem than wired models No for core local recording No-wiring installations
Aqara Video Doorbell G4 Battery or wired microSD card in the indoor chime, up to 512GB Only when wired Best suited to Aqara and Apple Home No for local recording; HomeKit Secure Video uses iCloud Apple Home households
TP-Link Tapo D235 Battery or wired Separately purchased microSD card, up to 512GB; optional Tapo Care cloud Requires hardwired power Confirm exact model and firmware before assuming NVR protocols No for local recording Value and flexible installation
eufy Video Doorbell E340 Battery or wired Device storage and optional HomeBase, depending on setup Verify for the exact configuration More proprietary Core local recording can be subscription-free Dual-camera package coverage

Prices change frequently. Reolink’s U.S. store showed the Wi-Fi model at $129.99, the PoE model around $109.99–$119.99, and Battery/2nd Gen listings roughly $119.99–$149.99 in snapshots checked August 16, 2026. Treat those as promotional snapshots, not permanent prices.

What “local storage” actually means

microSD in the outdoor doorbell

The card is convenient and inexpensive, but a thief who removes the doorbell may take the recordings with it. Use a high-endurance card and check that overwrite and failure warnings work.

microSD in an indoor chime

Aqara’s G4 stores recordings in its indoor chime rather than the camera body. That keeps the card indoors, but the chime still needs to be secured.

Hub, NVR, NAS or FTP

A Reolink Home Hub, NVR or NAS gives more capacity and can keep footage away from the camera. NVR/NAS systems are the strongest fit for long retention, multiple cameras and self-hosted tools such as Home Assistant, Blue Iris or Frigate.

Apple HomeKit Secure Video

HomeKit Secure Video is encrypted storage through Apple’s iCloud infrastructure and a compatible iCloud plan. It is not the same as purely local microSD, NVR or NAS recording.

Optional vendor cloud

Many products let you add cloud backup or extended history. That is separate from local recording and should be treated as an optional second destination.

Choose it when

  • Your home has usable doorbell wiring.
  • You want 24/7 recording as well as event clips.
  • You may later add an NVR, NAS or self-hosted video software.
  • You prefer removable storage over a required cloud plan.

Important limitations

  • It is not battery-powered and needs an adequately powered transformer.
  • A microSD card may be an additional purchase, and package contents vary.
  • Remote access, notifications and account services can still use internet-connected infrastructure.

Best for reliability: Reolink Video Doorbell PoE

The PoE model sends power and data over one Ethernet cable, avoiding Wi-Fi interference and making it the strongest choice for a new build, renovation or existing NVR network. Reolink documents 2K+/5MP video, 24/7 recording, microSD support up to 256GB on the documented model, NVR/Home Hub/FTP-NAS storage, RTSP and ONVIF. Details are on the Reolink PoE product page.

Plan for the installation

  • You may need a PoE switch, injector or PoE-capable NVR.
  • Running Ethernet is more involved than replacing a wired Wi-Fi doorbell.
  • Reolink also documents 12–24V AC or 24V DC wired-power configurations for the model; follow its installation requirements.

Best battery option: Reolink Video Doorbell Battery/2nd Gen

Reolink’s Battery/2nd Gen model brings a 2K 4MP head-to-toe view and person, vehicle, animal and package detection to homes without usable wiring. Reolink’s store lists local-storage options through compatible Home Hub or Wi-Fi NVR products. Battery-life figures, including a listing of up to 300 days for one model, are manufacturer estimates that vary with traffic, temperature, Wi-Fi, live viewing and detection settings.

Battery doorbells normally wake for events rather than recording continuously. Choose this range for installation freedom, not practical 24/7 archival recording.

Best for Apple Home: Aqara Video Doorbell G4

The Aqara G4 supports Apple Home integrations, battery or wired operation, local face-recognition features and up to 512GB of microSD storage in the indoor chime. Specifications are listed by Aqara.

What to know before buying

  • Wired power is required for 24/7 recording; battery mode is event-based.
  • The microSD card is not included according to Aqara’s product information.
  • HomeKit Secure Video remains Apple cloud storage, not an entirely local system.
  • Its 1080p video is lower resolution than the 2K/5MP Reolink and Tapo alternatives.

Best value with microSD: TP-Link Tapo D235

The Tapo D235 supports a separately purchased microSD card up to 512GB, battery or wired operation and optional Tapo Care cloud storage. Its listing states that continuous 24/7 recording requires hardwired power. See the D235 product page.

Tapo 2K+ Wired or Battery Powered Smart Video Doorbell with Chime, D225
  • 【Complete Flexibility - Wired and Wireless】The Tapo D225 offers users complete flexibility to mount the doorbell as they need. If hardwired (8-24V), users can take advantage of existing doorbell wiring to install. Hardwiring provides a unique option for 24/7 continuous recording for comprehensive monitoring. The doorbell camera also has a built in 10,000mAh battery allowing for flexible installation wherever needed for up to 8 months of battery life between charges.
  • 【Incredible 2K QHD Live View】View with incredible clarity monitoring in fine detail. Easily identify faces even when zoomed in, showing you everything you need to see outside your door. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi required; does not support 5 GHz.
  • 【180° Head-to-Toe Field of View】Say goodbye to blind spots. See the full picture with a 180° ultra-wide head-to-toe field of view. The ideal front door camera ensures you capture every detail from top to bottom, providing complete coverage.
  • 【Ring Call – Never Miss a Visitor】Receive a phone call to answer your door without opening up the Tapo app. Quickly answer visitors with once-click convenience. Stay connected, stay informed, and never miss a visitor again. (Calls are generated via app and will not use cellular minutes)
  • 【Free Person/Package/Vehicle Detection】This smart doorbell is equipped with advanced AI technology that detects any person, package or vehicle approaching your property. It sends real-time notifications directly to your device indicating person/vehicle/package detection, with the ability to select one, all, or no detection notifications.

Check the exact U.S. model before ordering: Tapo model numbers and wireless specifications vary by market, and the D235 should not be treated as interchangeable with the D225. Confirm any RTSP, ONVIF or third-party-NVR requirement against the exact model and firmware.

Best dual-camera alternative: eufy Video Doorbell E340

The E340 is attractive when a second camera aimed at packages or the area below the visitor matters. Current comparison coverage describes local recording with optional HomeBase support. Its storage behavior depends on whether the doorbell alone or a HomeBase is used, and the platform is more proprietary than Reolink.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not equate eufy’s local-storage option with zero cloud communication. Remote access, notifications and account services can still involve vendor infrastructure. Because eufy has faced past security and privacy controversy, avoid blanket claims that the E340 is the “private” choice without current, model-specific documentation.

How to choose the right storage architecture

Choose wired Reolink Wi-Fi

Pick the Wi-Fi model when you want the easiest retrofit that still supports local microSD, continuous recording and later NVR/NAS expansion.

Choose Reolink PoE

Use PoE when reliability, a wired network and self-hosted recording matter more than a simple installation.

aosu 2K Wireless Doorbell Camera with aosuBase, Battery Powered, 2.4G WiFi
  • 166° Wide View with 2K Clarity: The aosu wireless doorbell camera combines a wide 166° field of view with a 4:3 aspect ratio to capture more of your doorstep and the area around it, while showing visitors from head to toe and packages near your door. See it all in clear 2K resolution.
  • Flexible Local & Cloud Storage: This smart doorbell supports both local and cloud storage. A microSD card (up to 128GB, sold separately) slot lets you add your own card and store recordings locally with no subscription required, or choose optional cloud storage for added flexibility.
  • Smart AI Human Detection, Fewer False Alerts: AI-powered person detection helps this doorbell camera distinguish people from other motion, reducing false alerts and unnecessary notifications so you can focus on what matters at your door.
  • 3-in-1 aosuBase Mini: Wi-Fi, Storage & Chime: The aosu video doorbell pairs with the included aosuBase Mini, which helps extend 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage for a more reliable connection, provides a microSD card slot for local storage, and works as an indoor digital chime. Requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; 5 GHz is not supported.
  • Two-Way Talk with Quick Replies & Voice Changer: See, hear, and speak with visitors from anywhere through live two-way talk on your doorbell. When you can’t answer directly, use preset quick replies, or switch on the voice changer for added privacy when speaking with strangers.

Choose a battery model

Use Reolink Battery, Tapo D235, Aqara G4 or eufy E340 when wiring is unavailable. Accept event-based recording, charging maintenance and more dependence on wireless connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Aqara G4

Select it when Apple Home compatibility and chime-based indoor storage outweigh the lower video resolution and limited wired-only 24/7 mode.

Choose an NVR or NAS

Choose centralized storage when you need longer retention, multiple cameras, exportable files or protection against a camera being stolen. Add a UPS if recording during power interruptions matters.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How much storage do you need?

Retention depends on bitrate, resolution, frame rate, compression, motion activity and whether recording is continuous. As practical guidance:

  • Event-only recording may keep weeks or months on a 128GB card, depending on activity.
  • Continuous 2K or 5MP recording can fill 128GB in days rather than months.
  • A 512GB card is more suitable for continuous recording but is not indefinite archival storage.
  • An NVR or hard-drive-based NAS is better for long retention and several cameras.

What happens when the internet fails?

Local recording may continue through an internet outage if the doorbell can still reach its card, hub or NVR on the local network. Remote viewing and push notifications may stop or be delayed, and a Wi-Fi outage can prevent a wireless doorbell from reaching its storage destination. Test local playback with the internet disconnected rather than assuming it works.

  • Answer the Door Faster! With its built-in mic and speaker, you can hear and talk back to the visitors even if you're not at home. You can also preset voice messages or automatic replies for times when you're occupied.

Local storage also cannot protect footage if the outdoor camera, indoor chime or hub is stolen or destroyed. Keep hubs and NVRs in a secure indoor location.

Privacy and security trade-offs

Local recording reduces dependence on vendor retention, but it does not prove that a product is cloud-free or secure against every threat. Check encryption in transit and at rest, two-factor authentication, firmware support, account recovery, AI-processing location and the remote-access method.

Some systems send notification thumbnails or event metadata through vendor servers even when full-resolution video stays local. If you require zero vendor-cloud communication, plan for a LAN-only NVR, firewall rules and VPN access such as WireGuard or Tailscale; some vendor-app features may stop working.

Installation and maintenance checklist

  1. Verify transformer voltage, wattage and existing mechanical-chime compatibility.
  2. Choose a high-endurance microSD card sized for the recording mode.
  3. Secure any indoor chime, hub, NVR or NAS.
  4. Set the correct time zone and confirm timestamps.
  5. Enable two-factor authentication and change default credentials.
  6. Configure overwrite behavior and test a sample export.
  7. Update firmware before relying on the system.
  8. Disconnect the internet briefly and test local recording and playback.
  9. Test chime operation, alerts and remote viewing separately.
  10. Periodically play back footage and replace cards showing errors or unusual wear.

Bottom line

For a wired home, buy the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi for the best balance of local storage, continuous recording and flexible integrations. Choose Reolink PoE when you can run Ethernet and want the most dependable self-hosted setup. Choose Reolink Battery/2nd Gen for a no-wiring installation, Aqara G4 for Apple Home, Tapo D235 for value, and eufy E340 when dual-camera package coverage is the priority. In every case, distinguish “recorded locally” from “never communicates with the cloud.”
