For most UK boiler homes, the best smart thermostat choice in this 2024 guide is the Tado Smart Thermostat—provided its compatibility checker confirms it works with your boiler and wiring. It offers strong app control, scheduling, geofencing and a path to room-by-room control. Hive is the simpler budget alternative, Drayton Wiser 2nd Gen is better for multi-room radiator control, and Google Nest Learning Thermostat is the natural choice for compatible Google Home households.
This is a UK-focused 2024 snapshot. Smart thermostat prices, subscriptions, product generations and platform support change, so check the exact model and kit before buying. A smart thermostat can reduce wasted heating, but it cannot guarantee a lower bill: savings depend on your heating system, insulation, weather, energy prices and how the controls are used.

Quick recommendations
| Best for | Recommendation | Why consider it | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Tado Smart Thermostat | Strong app, scheduling, geofencing and broad UK heating-system coverage | Check compatibility and whether the features you want require a subscription |
| Best budget option | Hive Thermostat | Accessible system with remote control, schedules and a familiar UK ecosystem | It does not learn routines in the same way as Nest; plan terms vary |
| Best for multi-room heating | Drayton Wiser 2nd Gen | Designed around smart radiator thermostats and room-by-room control | Higher total cost and professional installation may be appropriate |
| Best for Google households | Google Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd generation | Learning schedules, occupancy sensing and a physical dial | Check the regional model, boiler compatibility and Apple limitations |
| Best newer smart-home option | Tado Smart Thermostat X | Thread and Matter positioning, with wired or wireless configurations depending on the kit | Included hardware and subscription features differ between kits |
| Best for Apple Home | No universal pick | Support depends on the exact 2024 model, country, firmware and bridge | Do not assume support from the manufacturer name alone |
| Best for heat pumps | A heat-pump-specific controller | Heat pumps need appropriate control logic and auxiliary-heat handling | Do not substitute a conventional boiler thermostat without explicit confirmation |
These are use-case recommendations, not claims that one thermostat is best for every home. The T3 buying guide uses a similar category-based approach and currently places Tado first overall, but its current page should not be treated as evidence for 2024 prices or for testing conducted by this publication.
How to choose the right smart thermostat
The most important question is not which thermostat has the most features. It is whether the system matches your heating equipment, wiring, home layout and preferred smart-home platform.

- The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory
- Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home. Lock feature: No
- Programmable thermostat that lets you create an energy efficient schedule in the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone
- Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
1. Identify your heating system
- Combi boiler: supplies heating and hot water directly. Some smart controls can manage both, but the terminals and boiler protocol must be checked.
- Conventional boiler and hot-water cylinder: you may need separate heating and hot-water control. Do not assume a heating-only thermostat can operate the cylinder correctly.
- Electric heating: confirm that the thermostat is rated for the voltage and load. A low-voltage boiler thermostat is not automatically suitable for line-voltage electric heating.
- Underfloor heating: check whether the system uses electric mats, water-based circuits or a proprietary controller. Zoning and floor-temperature limits may require dedicated controls.
- Heat pump: select a controller explicitly designed or certified for the exact heat-pump system. Heat pumps often use different operating logic from boilers.
- District or communal heating: permission, building controls and metering may limit what can be replaced. Ask the landlord, managing agent or system operator first.
Use the manufacturer’s compatibility tool and installation documentation before ordering. “Works with most boilers” is not enough evidence for an individual installation.
2. Check the wiring and included hardware
Some systems replace a wall thermostat; others require a receiver, internet hub or bridge connected near the boiler. Depending on the property, obstacles may include a missing permanent supply, absent common wire, proprietary boiler controls, incompatible relay terminals or an existing multi-zone arrangement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Confirm all of the following:
- Whether the thermostat is wired, wireless or available in both forms.
- Whether a receiver, bridge or hub is included in the chosen starter kit.
- Whether the system controls heating only or heating and hot water.
- Whether it needs permanent power, a common wire or batteries.
- Whether it supports your boiler’s control protocol rather than only basic on/off switching.
- Whether existing thermostatic radiator valves can remain, or need replacing for room-by-room control.
3. Compare the complete cost
The advertised thermostat price is only one part of the purchase. Budget for:
- The thermostat and any required receiver or hub.
- Professional installation, if needed.
- Smart radiator valves or additional room sensors.
- Replacement batteries or other consumables.
- Optional or required subscriptions.
- Future replacement of discontinued hubs or unsupported components.
Tado and Hive have both been associated with paid features or subscription considerations in the reviewed coverage. The exact plan, country and product generation matter, so check the current terms rather than assuming every feature is included. A cheaper thermostat with a mandatory paid service can cost more over three or five years than a costlier model with comparable features included.
The main options
Tado Smart Thermostat: best overall for many UK boiler homes
Tado is the strongest all-round recommendation where compatibility is confirmed. Its appeal is the combination of app control, schedules, geofencing, heating-system coverage and expansion into smart radiator valves. The system can suit combi and conventional boilers, some hot-water systems and underfloor-heating arrangements, but the exact installation still needs checking.
Geofencing can lower the heating when configured household members leave, while air-quality information and app controls add useful context. Advanced features may involve a subscription, and professional installation is sensible where the receiver or boiler wiring is unfamiliar. Certain configurations may be suitable for competent DIY installation, but mains-voltage and boiler work should be left to an appropriately qualified installer.
Choose Tado if: you want strong automation and may later add room-by-room control.
Look elsewhere if: you want every feature without recurring fees, or your heating system is not clearly supported.

Hive Thermostat: the simpler affordable UK option
Hive is a straightforward choice for a household that wants remote control, schedules and a mainstream UK ecosystem. A typical system may include a wall thermostat, receiver and internet-connected hub. It can also be attractive to households already using other Hive products.

Hive does not learn behaviour and build schedules in the same way as Nest. That can be an advantage for people who prefer predictable, manually configured routines, but it is less appealing if you want the thermostat to adapt automatically. Check current subscription and support arrangements for the precise product edition and country.
Choose Hive if: you want a relatively simple UK heating-control system and accept its feature limits.
Look elsewhere if: adaptive learning, advanced room control or a no-subscription ownership model is your priority.

Drayton Wiser 2nd Gen: best for multi-room radiator control
Wiser is aimed at larger or more complex homes where heating every room in the same way is wasteful or uncomfortable. Its key strength is the ability to add smart radiator thermostats and create room-by-room schedules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe principal hub generally needs professional installation, while additional components can be added wirelessly. The system costs more than a single-zone thermostat once valves and installation are included, but it can offer better control in homes with bedrooms, offices or rarely used rooms that need different schedules.
Manufacturer claims such as “up to 30%” savings must not be treated as a guaranteed household result. Actual results depend on the property, baseline heating pattern and configuration.
Choose Wiser if: multi-room radiator control is the main reason you are buying.
Look elsewhere if: you only need one zone or want the lowest installation complexity.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd generation: best for compatible Google homes
Nest is a good fit for households already committed to Google Home and interested in learning schedules, activity or occupancy sensing, app control and a physical dial. Its learning approach can reduce manual programming for regular routines.

Learning is not ideal for everyone. Shift workers, shared houses and households with irregular occupancy may prefer fixed schedules. Nest’s generation and regional version are important, and the configuration discussed in the source coverage does not support HomeKit or Siri. Do not buy it on the assumption that all Nest products share the same platform support.
Choose Nest if: you use Google Home and your exact boiler and wiring are confirmed compatible.
Look elsewhere if: Apple Home support, room-by-room radiator control or fully predictable manual scheduling is more important.

Tado Smart Thermostat X: consider it for Matter and Thread
Tado X is positioned as a newer connected ecosystem using Thread and Matter, with wired or wireless configurations depending on the kit. It may appeal to buyers building a newer smart home, but the exact starter kit determines what hardware is included and what the installation involves.
Check whether your preferred app, bridge, radiator valves and subscription features are supported by the exact model and firmware. “Matter-compatible” does not by itself mean that every heating feature is exposed identically in every smart-home platform.
Installation: DIY or professional?
DIY may be reasonable for a battery-powered or low-voltage replacement when the manufacturer explicitly supports self-installation and the existing wiring matches the instructions.
Use a qualified installer for mains connections, boiler receivers, unfamiliar wiring, heat pumps, multi-zone systems, hot-water control or any installation where local regulations require it. Incorrect wiring can disable heating or hot water, damage equipment or create a safety risk.
Before removing the old thermostat, photograph the existing terminals and record the system arrangement. Do not rely on wire colours alone. If the instructions do not clearly identify the terminals and required isolation procedure, stop and arrange professional help.

Actual results depend on:
- How much heating was previously wasted.
- Weather and the length of the heating season.
- Insulation, draughts and building fabric.
- Boiler or heat-pump efficiency and maintenance.
- Energy prices and the household’s chosen temperature.
- Whether automation is configured correctly.
- Whether the thermostat encourages extra heating because control is more convenient.
Start with a realistic schedule, use away control as an optional safeguard, and avoid heating rooms that do not need it. A smart thermostat is not a substitute for insulation, draught-proofing, appropriate boiler settings or a professional assessment of an inefficient heating system.
Geofencing, learning and internet outages
Geofencing is useful but imperfect
Location-based control can fail when a phone battery dies, permissions are disabled, a household member leaves their phone behind, a guest is present or a child or pet remains at home without a registered device. Keep a manual schedule or local control as a fallback rather than relying on geofencing alone.
Learning systems can conflict with real life
Automatic learning suits predictable routines. It may be frustrating for shift workers, shared homes or anyone who wants complete control over every change. A thermostat with a simple schedule can be the better choice even if it has fewer headline features.
Broadband failure changes what you can do
During an internet outage, remote app control will generally be unavailable. Local manual control may continue, and some models may continue their stored schedules; cloud-dependent automations may not. Check the exact product documentation before treating offline behaviour as a selling point.

Is room-by-room control worth it?
There are three different levels of control:
- One central thermostat: one temperature reading and one heating zone.
- Remote temperature sensor: helps the system measure a more representative room when the main thermostat is poorly placed.
- Smart radiator valves or separate zones: allow different rooms to follow different schedules and temperatures.
Room control can improve comfort and reduce heating in unused rooms, but it adds cost, batteries, setup work and more possible failure points. A smart radiator valve usually controls its individual radiator; it may not replace the main boiler controller. You may need both a central control system and room valves.
Thermostat placement matters
A smart thermostat cannot correct fully for a poor location. Avoid placing it near a radiator, draughty door, window, kitchen heat source, exterior wall or direct sunlight. A misleading temperature reading can cause the whole home to be underheated or overheated, regardless of how intelligent the app is.
Smart-home compatibility and privacy
Check the exact model against Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Google Home, Apple Home and Siri, Matter, Thread, IFTTT and the manufacturer’s own sensors and valves. Brand-level assumptions are unreliable because generations and regional versions differ.
Also consider privacy. Geofencing and occupancy features may process location or presence information. Review account permissions, household access and data settings before enabling them, particularly in a shared home.
Pre-purchase checklist
- What boiler, heat pump, electric system or communal heating arrangement do you have?
- Is the system heating-only, or does it also control hot water?
- How many zones are already installed?
- What terminals and power supply are present?
- Is a receiver, bridge or hub required?
- Does the manufacturer confirm compatibility with the exact model?
- Is professional installation required or advisable?
- Do you want one-zone control, sensors or smart radiator valves?
- Which smart-home platform must work?
- Which features require a subscription?
- What happens during an internet outage?
- For a rental, do you have written permission and a plan to restore the original control?
Renters and smart thermostats
Renters should obtain written landlord permission before replacing a wired thermostat. Confirm whether the building uses communal heating, whether an approved contractor is required and whether the original thermostat can be reinstated. A theoretically reversible installation is not necessarily permitted or practical.
Alternatives to buying a smart thermostat
A high-quality programmable thermostat may provide dependable scheduling without an account, cloud service or subscription. Smart radiator valves can be a better targeted upgrade when the central controller works well but individual rooms need different schedules. Boiler weather compensation, lower flow temperatures where appropriate, insulation and draught-proofing may deliver more meaningful efficiency improvements than replacing a working thermostat.
Verdict
Choose Tado Smart Thermostat for the best balance of app control, automation and expansion in a compatible UK boiler home. Choose Hive for a simpler mainstream system, Drayton Wiser when room-by-room radiator control matters most, and Nest when Google Home integration and learning schedules are the priority. For a heat pump, communal system or unusual wiring, start with compatibility—not the product ranking.
Before buying, price the complete installation, hub, sensors, radiator valves and subscription over several years. The right smart thermostat is the one that safely fits the heating system and household routine; its energy benefit comes from correct configuration and sensible use, not from the word “smart” on the box.
