Quick answer: IKEA FYRTUR was the most straightforward low-cost blackout choice in the 2023 lineup, provided its fixed sizes fit your window. Yoolax and Graywind were better starting points for custom-size shades. Lutron Serena occupied the premium, professionally integrated end of the market, while SmarterHome MySmartBlinds made the most sense as a retrofit option for compatible existing blinds.
This is a historical 2023 buying guide. Prices, availability, apps, hubs, motor options, and platform support may have changed since the original November 1, 2023 article. Current product details are identified where available.

What counts as a smart blind?
A motorized blind is not automatically a smart blind. A remote-controlled shade can open and close without an app, schedule, voice assistant, or away-from-home access.
- Factory-motorized shade: The motor is built into the new blind or shade.
- Smart-ready shade: A remote may work immediately, while app or voice control requires a hub or bridge.
- Retrofit motor: A separate device automates an existing blind or shade.
- Smart curtain motor: Automates drapery rather than a roller, cellular, zebra, or Venetian blind.
- Remote-only product: Wireless operation without necessarily offering schedules, scenes, remote access, or voice control.
Before buying, identify whether the product uses Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, another low-power wireless protocol, or a cloud service. Then check whether Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home/HomeKit, Matter, or SmartThings support applies to the exact motor and region. “Works with Alexa” may still mean that a particular hub is required.

- EASY INSTALL BLINDS: The remote blinds have a simple and practical no-drill mechanism(suitable for inside mount). Attach the adhesive extension block to the groove of the upper rail (it is forbidden to put more than one block), and then push it into the window frame. There is a battery compartment at the top to supply power for the shades. If the batteries are low, just take them out and replace. A stylish valance is included to block the light from the gap between fabric and the top rail
- EXCELLENT SHADING EFFECT: The fabric is made of a three-layer blackout textured fabric, which is safe and durable. It is a great combination of UV and privacy protection, suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens and office areas, etc
- SMART IMPLEMENTATION: The AX290 motor requires a smart bridge for APP control/voice control, which requires a hub at home, and you may try our hub. All models of Alexa and Google Assistant can be used to control motorized window shades, and can set timers and other scenes
- CONVENIENT LIFESTYLE: Motorized blinds allow you to achieve a smart home at minimal cost. In the morning, when you are still asleep, the shades in the bedroom open automatically on time, and the warm sunlight spread into the room lightly to wake you up for a new day, and in the evening, when the sun sets, the shades fall on time, creating a private space for the family
- SERVICE: We focus on products and service, if the fabric or components are damaged in any way when you receive the items, please take a photo and send it to us within 60 days, we will replace. Hapadif provides 2-year warranty for motors and controllers
Which smart blind is best for each buyer?
Best low-cost blackout option: IKEA FYRTUR
FYRTUR was the clearest choice for a buyer who wanted a cordless blackout roller blind in a standard size. The 2023-era documentation described an included remote, rechargeable battery, charger, and Zigbee repeater. It supported inside, outside, and ceiling mounting.
The trade-off is that fixed sizing matters more than brand preference. An unusually wide, tall, shallow, or obstructed window may not be a good candidate. A blind that is inexpensive but leaves large gaps—or cannot be mounted around a handle or crank—is not a bargain.

The original IKEA setup used the TRÅDFRI gateway. IKEA now positions DIRIGERA as its newer hub, app connection, Matter bridge, and Matter controller. Its U.S. listing showed $119.99 on August 18, 2026. That is not a current FYRTUR price and should not be added automatically to every purchase; it is relevant when app, voice, or broader smart-home control requires a hub. IKEA says existing TRÅDFRI owners can continue using that gateway for IKEA Home smart control, so replacement is not automatically necessary.
Best custom-size value starting points: Yoolax or Graywind
Yoolax and Graywind are more suitable than fixed-size IKEA shades when the opening requires made-to-measure width, a particular fabric, a solar shade, or a specialty configuration. Their custom-order model also introduces more responsibility: a measuring error can be expensive, and custom products may have restricted returns.
Current Yoolax pages advertise selected motorized collections with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit support, cordless construction, and rechargeable, solar, USB, or power-bank options. Some current examples were shown around $179–$185 in August 2026, but those are current examples rather than the prices or necessarily the models reviewed in 2023. Yoolax states that relevant collections may require charging roughly every four to six months, depending on use and configuration.
Graywind’s current pages emphasize custom sizing, solar options, multi-shade remotes, timed routines, and Alexa/Google control for selected products. The important qualification is that its bridge requirements vary. One product may advertise direct Alexa or Google operation, while another recommends a Zigbee hub or a different control package. Select the motor first, then verify the hub, app, platform, and region before paying.

That premium can be justified when the project includes many windows, unusual mounting conditions, professional installation, scenes shared with lighting, or a requirement for a mature automation ecosystem. It is difficult to justify for a bargain-minded buyer or renter replacing one small window covering.
Do not treat the 2023 description as a current specification sheet. A current Serena purchase should be quoted and checked for the present bridge, platform support, installation method, warranty, regional availability, and total installed price. No current official U.S. Serena price was established in the supplied research.
Best retrofit direction: SmarterHome MySmartBlinds
MySmartBlinds was described in 2023 as an app-controlled, Bluetooth-connected retrofit-style product with scheduling and Alexa support. The attraction is avoiding the cost and waste of replacing a functioning blind.
Retrofit systems are highly dependent on the existing blind’s tilt mechanism, dimensions, gear condition, and available mounting space. They are not universal replacements for factory-motorized roller shades. Current availability, supported blind types, app status, warranty, and official purchase information should be confirmed before choosing this product.
Best choice for renters
The original list is weak for renters. Replacing a shade normally involves drilling, exact measurements, and a custom or semi-permanent installation. A retrofit blind or curtain motor may be less invasive, although it may look less integrated and may not deliver true blackout performance. Check lease rules, mounting requirements, battery access, and removal procedures before ordering.
Blackout, solar, and other shade types
“Blackout” describes the fabric or shade design, not necessarily a completely dark room. Light can enter around the top and sides, especially with an inside mount. An outside mount usually covers more of the opening and can reduce edge leakage, but it needs adequate wall or trim space.
- Blackout roller: Appropriate for bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms. Edge gaps still matter.
- Light-filtering roller: Softens daylight and improves privacy without making the room fully dark.
- Solar shade: Reduces glare and potential UV exposure while commonly preserving some outward visibility. It is not equivalent to blackout fabric.
- Zebra or day/night shade: Alternates sheer and opaque bands for variable privacy and light control.
- Cellular shade: Offers a softer appearance and may provide insulation benefits, depending on construction and installation.
- Roman shade: Decorative but potentially heavier, making motor selection and mounting more important.
- Curtain motor: Useful for drapes and sliding doors, but not a substitute for a roller or blackout blind.
Claims such as “85% blackout,” “90% blackout,” “100% blackout,” “quiet,” and “energy saving” are not interchangeable performance measurements. Treat them as manufacturer or seller claims unless independently measured, and consider the whole installation rather than the fabric label alone.

Calculate the complete system cost
The displayed shade price is only one part of the project. Use this formula:
Total cost = shade(s) + motor and accessories + remote + required hub or bridge + installation + likely replacement-power costs.
Also account for custom-sizing premiums, solar panels, USB or plug-in adapters, shipping, taxes, professional measuring, electrical work, and possible return fees. Compare two totals:
- Remote-only cost: The minimum setup for opening and closing the shade locally.
- Fully smart cost: The setup including the hub or bridge, app connection, voice integration, and any required accessories.
For example, the historical FYRTUR guide listed U.S. prices of $129–$179 depending on width and described a $35 TRÅDFRI gateway in the earlier IKEA ecosystem. Those are historical reference points, not current prices. Current DIRIGERA pricing and availability should be checked on IKEA’s product page.
Installation and measurement checklist
Measure before selecting the brand. Follow the current manufacturer’s instructions because deductions and finished-shade dimensions differ.
- Measure window width at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Measure height at multiple points.
- For an inside mount, check the recess depth and use the manufacturer’s specified width rule.
- Inspect handles, locks, screens, crank mechanisms, trim, and nearby obstructions.
- Decide between inside, outside, or ceiling mounting.
- Confirm that brackets, screws, charger, battery, and remote are included.
- Check whether a nearby outlet is needed for a hub, repeater, solar charger, or hardwired motor.
- Confirm whether drilling is allowed and whether the shade can be removed without damage.
- Verify whether the ordered dimension means window size or finished shade size.
- Read the custom-order return policy before submitting measurements.
For an inside mount, record the narrowest measurement only if the manufacturer instructs you to do so. Photograph the window, trim, mounting surface, and obstructions before ordering. That record can expose a fit problem before installation.

Battery power is usually easiest to install and gives the cleanest appearance, but the motor must be recharged. Large or heavy shades and frequent daily cycles can increase consumption. Ask whether the battery can be removed while the shade remains mounted.

- Makes Retrofitting Blinds Easy: SwitchBot Blind Tilt removes the need to replace existing louvers, and with simple installation, you can make your blinds smart instantly. (Compatible Blinds: Only supports horizontal blinds with a tilt rod. Not compatible with vertical blinds, roller shades, or roller blinds.)
- Endless Solar Battery Life: Our smart blinds feature a built-in 2000mAh lithium battery, and includes a solar panel for endless environmentally-friendly charging.
- Precise Alignment Control: SwitchBot Blind Tilt uses a customized high-precision motor to allow for blind adjustments to the closest 2°. It also includes a built-in light sensor to automatically adjust to help you maintain a constant light intensity depending on the light outside.
- Multiple Control Methods: Use our app or use timers to open and close your smart blinds when in Bluetooth range. And when paired with SwitchBot Hub Mini(sold separately), you'll be able to use smart assistants such as Alexa, Google Home and Siri to control your blinds remotely even when you're outside of the house.
- Control via Groups: When in Bluetooth range you can control up to 4 sets of blinds with one button through our app, and can set unlimited groups when used together with SwitchBot Hub Mini (sold separately).
Solar power can reduce charging, but a panel needs adequate light. A shaded, north-facing, deeply recessed, or heavily tinted window may not provide enough energy. Confirm panel placement and what happens during extended cloudy periods.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
USB or power-bank charging is flexible, but visible cables can compromise the installation.
Hardwired power is appropriate for permanent installations and frequent operation, but may require electrical work and professional installation.
Do not compare “long battery life” claims without asking about window size, fabric weight, cycle frequency, wireless protocol, temperature, and signal quality. Yoolax’s four-to-six-month charging statement applies to relevant current collections, not automatically to every shade or operating pattern.
Smart-home compatibility questions
For each exact product configuration, confirm:
- Which Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home/HomeKit, Matter, or SmartThings features are supported?
- Is a bridge required, and is it included?
- Does voice control support percentage positioning, or only open and close?
- Can multiple shades be grouped into rooms or scenes?
- Do schedules run locally or depend on the manufacturer’s cloud?
- Does the shade remain controllable by remote or Bluetooth if Wi-Fi fails?
- Can multiple household members access it?
- Is support different by country, motor generation, or app version?
Current IKEA documentation describes DIRIGERA as connecting IKEA products to the IKEA Home smart app and supporting integrations with Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and Matter. That should not be assumed to describe the original 2023 TRÅDFRI setup exactly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Similarly, current Yoolax and Graywind pages show that support can vary by motor. Brand-level statements such as “Yoolax works with HomeKit” or “Graywind works with Google” are incomplete unless they identify the exact SKU, bridge, region, and included control package.
Setup and failure recovery
A typical installation and pairing sequence is:
- Charge the motor or connect power.
- Pair the included remote.
- Install the manufacturer’s current app.
- Add the motor directly or add its hub.
- Set the upper and lower travel limits.
- Name the blind and assign it to a room.
- Add the voice-assistant integration if required.
- Test open, close, stop, percentage positioning, groups, and schedules.
- Test remote or local operation with Wi-Fi disconnected if offline control matters.
Common problems have predictable causes:
- Remote works but the app does not: Check the hub, account, network, pairing, and wireless range.
- Voice assistant sees the blind but cannot set an exact percentage: The integration may support only open and close.
- One blind works but a group does not: Check room assignments, accounts, and hub membership.
- Schedules run at the wrong time: Check location, time zone, daylight-saving settings, and cloud dependence.
- Battery drains quickly: Consider shade weight, cycle frequency, weak signal, cold temperatures, and repeated connection attempts.
- Solar charging is inadequate: Reassess sunlight, panel position, tint, and seasonal conditions.
- Light leaks around the shade: Check mount type and side gaps before blaming the fabric.
- Calibration is lost: Use the current manufacturer manual’s limit-setting or reset procedure.
- Wi-Fi fails: Test the remote, Bluetooth, and any documented local schedules separately.
- Power fails: Confirm whether the shade can be moved manually, stays in its last position, or needs charging or resetting.
Safety and long-term ownership
Cordless motorized designs can reduce cord hazards, and the 2023 descriptions highlighted cordless construction for Yoolax and IKEA. That does not eliminate every risk. Secure brackets properly, store remotes away from small children, and ensure that a heavy shade cannot fall from an unsuitable mounting surface.
Manufacturer statements about child or pet safety should not be confused with an independently verified certification unless a named standard and certification are provided. Check batteries, cables, chain loops, manual pull controls, and mounting hardware as part of the safety review.
Before ordering, also consider what happens if the app changes, the hub is discontinued, the motor loses calibration, or the manufacturer stops supporting the product. A shade that still works from a local remote is less vulnerable than one that depends entirely on cloud access.
