The best small over-the-range (OTR) microwave depends on what is tight in your kitchen: a 24-inch cabinet opening or the vertical space above the cooktop. Those needs call for different models. GE’s GVMB14S4WSS is a genuinely narrow 24-inch option; its UVM9125DYWW is a low-profile model that is still 30 inches wide. Neither is a safe replacement based on width alone: check the cutout, cabinet depth, door swing, mounting, electrical connection, and vent setup before choosing.
What “small” means for an over-the-range microwave
Compact OTR microwaves solve two different fit problems:
- Narrow width: A 24-inch model may suit a narrower cabinet opening, provided its published cutout dimensions and installation requirements match.
- Low profile: A low-profile 30-inch model reduces the microwave’s height above the cooking area but still needs a 30-inch-wide opening.
These formats are not interchangeable unless the opening and installation plan support the model. Measure the actual space and compare it with the manufacturer’s cutout dimensions and complete installation manual, rather than relying on a nominal width.

Measure the opening and installation space first
Record the existing unit and cabinet opening’s width, height, and depth. Also note which side the door hinges on, whether a wall or deep cabinet is beside that hinge, how the door will swing, and where the power connection and exhaust duct are located. Then compare those measurements with the selected model’s cutout drawing and installation instructions.
Clearances and cabinet limits
GE’s general guidance says a typical OTR installation between cabinets does not require side or rear air clearance. If a deep cabinet or wall is on the hinge side, GE says current models require 1/2 inch for the door to open. GE also cites 66 inches from the floor to the bottom of the attaching cabinet, describing this as 30 inches from the cooktop to that cabinet. These are GE support guidelines, not a substitute for the specific model manual or applicable local requirements. Check that manual for the allowed cabinet depth and required clearances. OTR units need the right kind of opening
GE says OTR microwaves are designed for an overhead cabinet opening and are not designed to be fully encased. Its guidance says not to place an OTR unit on a counter or shelf, or install one in a closed cabinet or a cutout with a covered bottom. Confirm the installation method for the specific unit rather than treating it like a countertop microwave.
Replacing an existing hood or microwave
Do not assume a new unit will use the old mounting arrangement simply because the widths appear to match. Verify the mounting points, cabinet depth, electrical connection, and exhaust configuration. GE says its OTR units include mounting hardware, templates, and instructions; it also notes that many current 30-inch models offer an optional 36-inch filler kit when replacing a 36-inch hood opening. Confirm compatibility for the specific model and opening before buying a filler component. GE replacement guidance.

Capacity on the label is not the whole story
A published cubic-foot figure does not necessarily describe how much of the interior is practical for cooking. Consumer Reports says most OTR models it tested had usable capacity around 40 to 50 percent of their advertised capacity. That is a lab-tested finding for most models in its testing, not a measurement of either GE compact model above or a universal rule for every OTR microwave. Compare measured usable-capacity ratings when available, and consider the dishes you actually use. Consumer Reports microwave buying guide.
Consumer Reports’ lab testing includes heating, defrosting, speed, noise, ease of use, usable capacity, and OTR venting. These are useful dimensions for judging a microwave, but the available model information here does not establish comparable scores for the listed compact models. A capacity or wattage figure alone cannot identify the best performer.

Consider ventilation, reach, and installation cost
An OTR microwave frees counter space and includes a fan, but Consumer Reports says OTR fans do not vent cooking gases as well as dedicated range hoods. If removing cooking fumes is the priority, consider a separate hood paired with a countertop or built-in microwave instead. Consumer Reports’ 2026 OTR microwave guide.
Also think about who will use the microwave and whether hot dishes will be comfortable to lift down from above the cooktop. Consumer Reports notes that high-mounted hot dishes can be difficult to reach, and installation can add several hundred dollars and may require an electrician. That cost and work depend on the actual installation; obtain an installation estimate if the electrical or vent arrangement needs changes. The cited GE product page says installation service is unavailable for the GVMB14S4WSS, so do not assume the manufacturer page supplies an installer for that model.

How to choose the right compact format
- Measure the space. Write down the opening width, height, depth, hinge-side clearance, and distance from cooktop to cabinet.
- Choose the fit problem. If width is the constraint, investigate 24-inch models. If vertical clearance is the constraint and the cabinet opening is 30 inches wide, consider a low-profile model.
- Check the installation manual. Confirm cutout dimensions, cabinet-depth limits, mounting, door swing, power, and exhaust requirements for the exact model.
- Compare useful capacity and performance. Look for independent usable-capacity, heating, defrosting, noise, ease-of-use, and venting ratings where available; do not infer a performance winner from advertised capacity or wattage.
- Account for the complete installation. Include any electrical, duct, mounting, or filler-kit work in the decision and confirm parts fit the selected model.
When an OTR microwave is not the best fit
A compact OTR unit may not be the right choice if your opening does not match a model’s cutout, the door cannot clear a nearby wall, or the microwave would be uncomfortably high for the people who use it. It may also be the wrong compromise if strong range ventilation matters more than freeing countertop space. In those cases, a separate range hood with a countertop or built-in microwave can better address the constraints.
