For a standard tub/shower setup, a “single-function bathtub diverter valve” generally means a single-handle control serving a tub spout and one shower outlet, with a diverter switching water between them. It is not a consistent formal product category, so shop by the rough-in valve, trim compatibility, and outlet arrangement—not by that phrase alone.
What “single function” means for a tub/shower
In a conventional arrangement, the control operates a tub spout and one shower outlet, usually a showerhead. The diverter directs water to the tub spout or to the shower. Listings may call the trim a “diverter” product even when it is designed to switch among shower outlets instead. Check the specified outlets and application before buying.
A multi-outlet diverter is a different setup: it selects or combines shower outlets, such as a showerhead and body sprays. It may use distinct rough-in hardware and is not automatically suitable for a tub-spout application.
Identify the rough-in before choosing trim
The rough-in valve is the plumbing hardware installed behind the wall; the trim is the visible handle and cover, and may include other exposed components. Trim compatibility depends on the rough-in’s brand and valve family. Moen’s trim compatibility guide instructs buyers to identify the existing valve and distinguishes families such as Moentrol and Posi-Temp. Its M-Core guide distinguishes a four-port tub-and-shower rough-in from a three-port shower-only rough-in, as well as differences between M-Core 2 and 3 Series.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium metal construction - Durability and reliability
- Easy to use - Pull up to divert, integrated diverter for switching between tub and shower applications
- Unrestricted flow rate - Allows for rapid filling of the tub
- High quality finish - Will resist rust and corrosion through everyday use
- Easy to install - Designed to easily install with standard U.S. plumbing connections
Before ordering replacement trim, identify the brand and exact rough-in family from installation records, accessible valve markings, or manufacturer documentation. If you cannot confirm it, ask the manufacturer or a qualified plumber to identify the valve rather than assuming trim from the same brand will fit.
Check what the package includes
Product titles and photos do not always make clear whether a listing includes the rough-in valve, cartridge, tub spout, or showerhead. Read the exact model’s specification and installation documents, and make a parts checklist before comparing listings.

- Trim only: Visible components; the matching rough-in valve may need to be purchased separately.
- Valve and trim: Confirm that the included valve matches the intended tub/shower outlet arrangement and that the required cartridge is included.
- Spout and shower components: Verify whether the tub spout and showerhead are included, and check connection details and finish for each part.
For example, KOHLER Honesty K-T99763-4 is a Rite-Temp bath-and-shower trim kit with an integrated push-button diverter. KOHLER’s US/CA specification dated 2026-01-30 states that it is trim only and requires a K-11748 or K-11748-KS Rite-Temp pressure-balancing valve, sold separately. Do not treat the model as a complete valve-and-trim package.
Confirm the diverter’s outlet arrangement
Look for explicit language saying the product is intended for a tub spout and showerhead. A “three-function diverter” may be meant to control multiple shower outlets, not to switch between a tub spout and showerhead. Delta’s T27899 page describes three-function integrated diverter trim, recommends an R22000 rough-in valve kit, and says the trim is not recommended for tub-spout applications. That is a model-specific warning, but it illustrates why the number of functions and the intended outlets matter more than the word “diverter.”

Pressure-balancing design and flow figures are useful comparisons only when they belong to the exact model and configuration. They do not establish that one product is universally better, and local plumbing requirements may affect what is appropriate for your project.

KOHLER’s US/CA specification for K-T99763-4, dated 2026-01-30, lists a showerhead flow of 2.5 gpm (9.5 lpm). That is the listed flow for this model’s showerhead, not a general diverter-valve rating. The same specification says: “Rite-Temp® pressure-balancing technology maintains water temperature within +/- 3°F.” This is the manufacturer’s stated figure for that product, not independently verified test data and not a claim about other valves.
Compare the temperature-control description and stated flow for the exact model you are considering. Check applicable local plumbing rules and current manufacturer documentation before purchase or installation.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the installed or planned rough-in valve brand and exact family.
- Confirm that the trim is listed as compatible with that rough-in.
- Check whether the listing includes the rough-in valve and required cartridge, or is trim only.
- Verify that the diverter switches the tub spout and shower outlet you intend to use—not just multiple shower outlets.
- Compare the exact model’s temperature-control and flow specifications, and check local requirements.
- Confirm included spout or shower components, connection details, and finish against the exact product specification.
How to choose without relying on a “best” label
There is no meaningful universal winner based on the phrase “single-function bathtub diverter valve” alone. Choose a model only after its rough-in compatibility, package contents, and outlet arrangement match your project. Treat product-specific flow and temperature claims as applying only to the configuration and market stated by the manufacturer, and verify current documentation before ordering.
