There is no single best sharpening stone for every knife, pair of scissors, or woodworking tool. Choose by the tool you are sharpening, the finish you want, and how much setup and maintenance you are willing to handle. Waterstones favor quick cutting and a smoother finish; benchstones favor durability and longer flatness retention; diamond stones cut quickly and stay flat, but generally leave a less polished surface.

What “whetstone” means—and why the distinction matters

“Whetstone” is a general term for a sharpening stone, not a synonym for waterstone. Norton’s sharpening-stone guide treats waterstones, benchstones, and diamond stones as distinct options. Their different abrasive surfaces and care requirements make the right choice depend on your tool and working preferences.

Compare the main stone types

Type Cutting and finish Flatness and upkeep Setup
Waterstone Cuts quickly as fresh abrasive is exposed and can produce a smoother finish than a benchstone. Softer construction wears more quickly and requires frequent flattening. Some waterstones require soaking; check the specific stone’s instructions.
Benchstone or oilstone Norton identifies aluminum oxide (India) and silicon carbide (Crystolon) as common abrasive types in its manufactured benchstones. Durable, slow-wearing, and holds flatness significantly longer than a waterstone, according to Norton. Lubrication varies by stone. Norton recommends oil for its benchstones; follow your manufacturer’s directions.
Diamond stone Norton describes diamond stones as fast and aggressive. It says they remove slightly more material than similar-grit benchstones and waterstones and generally leave a less polished surface. Norton says diamond stones retain flatness longer than waterstones and benchstones. Follow the product’s care guidance; do not assume a sharpening plate is also a flattening plate.
Ceramic stone Performance and finish vary by product; Woodcraft includes ceramic stones as a separate category in its comparison. Woodcraft says ceramic stones’ hard bond helps them hold shape, though they can glaze and may benefit from occasional lapping. Check the maker’s instructions for maintenance and compatible lapping methods.

Choose by the work you do

For a smoother finish and fast cutting

A waterstone is worth considering when you value a smooth finish and do not mind maintaining a flat surface. Norton notes that waterstones are softer than benchstones and therefore wear more quickly; Woodcraft also describes their fast cutting as fresh abrasive is exposed. That combination can be useful, but it means flattening is part of regular upkeep.

For a durable stone that stays flat longer

A manufactured benchstone is a practical choice if you want slower wear and less frequent flattening than with a waterstone. Norton says its benchstones may be lubricated with oil or water, but recommends oil for its own stones because it is more effective at preventing loading. Norton also cautions against cooking oil and motor oil. Those recommendations apply to Norton stones; use the lubricant specified by the manufacturer of your stone.

For quick, aggressive material removal

A diamond stone can suit work where fast cutting and long flatness retention matter more than a highly polished result. Norton describes diamond stones as more aggressive and says they remove slightly more material than similar-grit alternatives. For additional polishing, Norton describes following a diamond stone with a fine waterstone or hard Arkansas stone as an option—not a required progression.

For a hard-bonded ceramic option

Woodcraft’s general comparison says ceramic stones hold their shape well because of their hard bond, but can glaze. It notes occasional lapping with a diamond stone as a maintenance option. Treat that as category-level guidance, not a guarantee for every ceramic product; check the stone’s own instructions before lapping it.

Account for flattening before you buy

Waterstones that wear unevenly need flattening to maintain a usable surface. A dedicated flattening or lapping plate may be appropriate, but a diamond sharpening stone is not automatically suitable for the job. DMT says it does not recommend using its stones to flatten waterstones, Arkansas stones, or synthetic stones unless the product is designated Diaflat. Check that a plate is intended for flattening the type of stone you own.

Use grit and care instructions for your specific tool and stone

The available guidance does not establish one ideal grit progression for every blade or tool. A kitchen knife, scissors, and woodworking tool are not interchangeable use cases, and the right stone depends on the edge condition and finish you want. Confirm the intended use and grit guidance from the stone and tool manufacturers rather than buying a progression simply because it is commonly recommended.

What the available guidance does—and does not—establish

Norton’s manufacturer guidance, Woodcraft’s retailer comparison, and DMT’s product-specific care guidance describe category-level differences, not a tested ranking of current models. They do not establish current prices, stock, or a universal best stone. For a specific purchase, compare the manufacturer’s instructions with your tool, desired finish, and tolerance for maintenance.
