How to choose a shallow tray
Measure the space and the items
Check the usable length, width and height of the surface or drawer, including clearance beneath shelves or inside a desk. Then consider what the tray needs to hold: a low-profile tray can corral small daily essentials, but its shallow sides are not designed to contain everything.
Published examples differ in footprint. Woodstock Leisure Syndicate lists its medium melamine tray at 9.3 × 6.3 × 0.8 inches, while Wondrwood offers its Tidy Tray in sizes from 7 × 5 × 0.8 inches to 11.8 × 7.8 × 0.8 inches. Match the tray to its location
Open catchall trays can organize objects on a desk, nightstand, entryway table or coffee table. A drawer may call for a tray whose dimensions suit its interior; a product’s stated fit in one desk or drawer does not establish compatibility with other furniture. If you want concealed storage rather than an open tray, an under-desk drawer is a different kind of solution.

Compare material and care
The examples here include wood, melamine and PU vegan leather. Material alone does not establish which tray will last longest. Follow the maker’s care guidance: Wondrwood recommends hand washing and drying its solid acacia wood tray and says a wood sealant may be reapplied. Woodstock says its melamine tray is not food safe, so do not treat it as a serving tray.
Decide whether stacking or compartments matter
All four catchall examples below have an open interior rather than fixed compartments. If you need separate sections, look for a divided organizer instead. Stacking can save space when trays are not in use or let you keep items in layers, but confirm the dimensions and compatibility for the exact products and furniture involved.

When a shallow tray is not the right choice
For a completely concealed workspace solution, consider a clamp-on drawer rather than an open catchall.
