For slate you want to keep looking natural, LATICRETE STONETECH Heavy Duty Sealer is a well-supported option: its manufacturer lists slate, interior and exterior use, and protection against oil- and water-based stains. It is a penetrating sealer, not a universal winner or a guarantee that every slate surface will perform the same way. Choose a different product if you want to deepen the stone’s color or add a glossy topical finish.
Choose the finish before choosing the sealer
Slate sealers serve different appearance goals. A penetrating sealer is the natural-look choice; a color enhancer deepens the stone and can create a wet effect; a topical finishing sealer adds a surface finish. When Heavy Duty Sealer is the natural-look choice
If your priority is to retain slate’s natural appearance while adding penetrating stain protection, Heavy Duty Sealer is the clearest fit among the options described here. LATICRETE lists slate and both interior and exterior applications, and describes protection against oil- and water-based stains. Those are manufacturer claims, not an independent comparative test or proof of a particular service life.
For outdoor natural-look water repellency, LATICRETE’s slate guide also names STONETECH Heavy Duty Exterior Sealer. Because it is a separate product, use its own current label and application directions rather than assuming Heavy Duty Sealer instructions apply.

For richer color: Enhancer Pro
Choose a color enhancer when you want slate to look darker or more saturated. LATICRETE describes Enhancer Pro as a penetrating product that gives a wet effect without gloss. Its cited product page is European, so readers elsewhere should verify the locally sold product and its label before buying or applying it. The slate-care guide distinguishes this solvent-based product, intended for interior and exterior use, from the water-based Enhancer Sealer it names for interior use.
For gloss: High Gloss Finishing Sealer
A topical gloss is a distinct finish choice rather than a substitute for an impregnating natural-look sealer. The slate-care guide’s wet-slip warning matters especially on floors and other surfaces that may be walked on while damp. Consider whether the appearance is worth that practical trade-off for the location.

Prepare slate before sealing
The LATICRETE slate-care guide advises testing an inconspicuous area, allowing a 24-hour cure for that test, and starting with a clean surface free of waxes and coatings. It also advises ventilation during application and drying. Existing treatments can affect how a new product behaves, so do not skip the hidden-area test.
The guide is document DS-211.4-1016, dated 2016, and says instructions and product data sheets may change without notice. Treat its detailed directions as product-specific guidance; the current regional label and datasheet should govern the work.

Apply Heavy Duty Sealer according to its product-specific directions
The slate guide gives the following sequence for STONETECH Heavy Duty Sealer. Do not transfer these timings to another sealer.
- Apply an even coat to the clean, prepared slate.
- Keep the surface wet while the sealer penetrates for 10–15 minutes.
- Wipe the entire surface dry.
- On porous, absorbent surfaces, apply a second coat if needed, following the product directions.
- Allow 6–8 hours before resuming use; the guide states a full cure of 24–72 hours.
Those times come from the 2016 slate-care guide and should be checked against the current product label for your region and conditions.
