Bosch’s high-speed augers use hex shanks for rotary drills and drill/drivers; Makita’s SDS-Plus wood bits are a separate accessory type, designed for rotary hammers in rotation-only mode. Choose between those paths based on your tool and drilling task—not the word “SDS” alone.
Are SDS auger bits available?
“Auger bit” and “SDS-Plus wood bit” are not interchangeable terms in the cited manufacturer catalogs. Bosch identifies its high-speed augers as accessories for rotary drills/drivers and specifies a hex shank for standard three-jaw drill chucks and hexagonal drill-driver chucks. Makita separately lists SDS-Plus wood drill bits with brad points for rotary hammers that accept SDS-Plus shanks; its overview specifies rotation-only operation. Bosch’s high-speed auger listings and Makita’s SDS-Plus wood-bit overview show the difference.
So if you need a conventional auger, look for one compatible with a rotary drill/driver and its chuck. If you need to drill wood with an SDS-Plus rotary hammer, choose an SDS-Plus wood bit and follow the manufacturer’s operating-mode instructions. The SDS interface describes how the bit connects to the tool; it does not by itself make a wood bit an auger.
How to choose the right bit for your tool and hole
- Match the shank to the tool. For the Bosch augers described here, confirm that your drill has a compatible three-jaw chuck or hexagonal drill-driver chuck. For an SDS-Plus wood bit, use a rotary hammer that accepts SDS-Plus bits.
- Check the operating mode. Makita specifies rotation-only operation for its SDS-Plus wood bits. Do not use hammer action for this application; confirm that your rotary hammer can be set to rotation-only before buying.
- Confirm the bit’s intended use. The Bosch examples below are high-speed augers for rotary drills/drivers. Makita’s examples are brad-point wood drill bits for SDS-Plus rotary hammers, not augers.
- Choose the diameter for the hole. Compare the bit diameter with the required hole size and the workpiece. Do not assume a listed size is suitable for a different task or material.
- Check both lengths. Working length indicates the usable drilling reach; total length is the bit’s full length. Allow for the workpiece, access, and the tool’s chuck or holder when checking clearance.
- Verify the exact listing before purchase. Manufacturer specifications identify examples, not live stock or retailer availability. Confirm the current catalog details and compatibility for the specific tool and bit.

Can these examples be ranked by performance?
Not on the available evidence. The cited pages provide manufacturer descriptions and specifications, not independent head-to-head results for drilling speed, hole quality, durability, or value. Bosch’s product page includes performance claims, but those are manufacturer claims and do not establish a comparative winner. A meaningful ranking would require comparable tools, wood, bit diameters and drilling conditions, plus consistent measurements.
Makita’s overview is an older document indexed as published approximately 2018, so check its current catalog and product pages before purchase. The cited manufacturer pages are US-focused; they do not establish prices, retailer stock, or availability elsewhere.
