There is no single best screw for every shower surround. Use the fastener specified in the installation manual for your exact model and fastening system. One Swan Corporation alcove procedure, for example, permits roofing nails or galvanized drywall screws to secure side panels to studs; that is a product-specific instruction, not a universal standard.
Which screws should you use for a shower surround?
Start with the surround manufacturer’s current installation manual. The right fastener depends on the panel design, flange or interlock, framing, and installation configuration. A fastener suitable for attaching a panel flange is not automatically suitable for attaching backer board, and vice versa.
In a Swan Corporation shower alcove procedure, the manufacturer says, “Use roofing nails or galvanized drywall screws to secure the side panels to the studs.” The same procedure specifies a 3/16-inch pilot hole through the horizontal flange at each wall stud and through the vertical flange every 12 inches. These are instructions from that procedure; its publication date and applicability to a specific current model are not established. Do not transfer its fastener or dimensions to another surround without checking that model’s manual. Swan Corporation installation procedure
How to choose the correct fastener
- Identify the exact surround. Find the model and configuration—such as corner, alcove, or tub-shower—and use the corresponding installation guide.
- Check how the panels attach. Confirm whether the guide calls for fastening through a flange, using an interlock, or following another system-specific method. Do not assume all direct-to-stud panels use the same detail.
- Follow the listed fastener and preparation requirements. Use the specified fastener type, pilot-hole instructions, fastening locations, and spacing. If the manual does not establish a screw length or coating, do not guess based on another product’s directions.
- Verify the wall assembly separately. Follow the surround and backing-material instructions for substrate, waterproofing, and any required barrier before closing the wall.
Swan and MAAX publish product-specific direct-to-stud installation information. MAAX provides separate guides for its Utile corner, alcove, and tub-shower configurations, so select the one matching the installation rather than treating one guide as interchangeable with another. Do not confuse panel fasteners with backer-board fasteners
A shower surround’s panel flange and the material behind it are different parts of the assembly. Use the surround manual for panel attachment, and the backer-board or waterproofing system’s directions for that layer. The Building America Solution Center’s guidance for seamed tub and shower enclosures identifies cement board and equivalent moisture-resistant products as possible backing, while directing installers to manufacturer recommendations for assembly details. It does not establish one universal screw specification for attaching either panels or backer board. Building America Solution Center: Tub and Shower Enclosures
Plan the waterproofing and wall preparation
Choose an appropriate backing assembly
The Building America Solution Center advises against paper-faced backer board behind seamed tub and shower enclosures. Ordinary cement board resists moisture but is not inherently waterproof. Unless the board itself is a manufactured waterproof product, the guidance calls for either fluid-applied waterproofing over it or a water-resistant barrier behind it that allows drainage. Follow the instructions for the particular enclosure and waterproofing system so the layers work together. Building America Solution Center: Tub and Shower Enclosures

Check framing and exterior walls
Before installing the panels, check that framing is plumb. For an exterior wall behind a tub or shower, Building America guidance recommends insulation that fills the cavity and a continuous air barrier sealed at seams and penetrations. The guide describes fastening thin-profile air-barrier material to studs and sealing seams and holes. Building America Solution Center: Air Sealing Tub and Shower Enclosures on Exterior Walls
Use suitable tools for cement board
If cement board is part of the assembly, the guide identifies an abrasive-blade saw or a task-specific tool with a carbide tip for cutting it. MAAX also provides a tools-and-supplies list for Utile installations; use the list for the matching product, not as a substitute for its installation guide. Common fastener mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by material name alone: “Drywall screw” does not make a fastener appropriate for every surround. The cited Swan procedure permits galvanized drywall screws for its stated panel attachment; that does not establish suitability for other products or for backer board.
- Applying one product’s spacing to another: The 3/16-inch pilot hole and 12-inch vertical-flange spacing belong to the cited Swan procedure, not to shower surrounds generally.
- Guessing at length or coating: The available procedure excerpt does not establish a universal screw length or coating grade. Use the exact model’s instructions rather than extrapolating.
- Treating cement board as waterproof: Unless the board is a waterproof product, provide the specified waterproofing layer or draining barrier.
- Closing an unprepared exterior wall: Address insulation and the continuous, sealed air barrier before the surround conceals the cavity.
What to do when the manual is unclear
Do not substitute a generic screw recommendation for missing product-specific information. Confirm the model and configuration, then contact the surround manufacturer for the approved fastener and installation detail. Also check applicable local requirements for the complete wall assembly; a manufacturer’s panel-fastening instruction does not by itself specify every code or waterproofing requirement.
