The best sandpaper for a drum sander is the abrasive that fits your machine and suits the work—not a universally “best” brand or grit. Confirm the backing, width, wrap length and end pattern first; then choose a grit for the stock and the amount of material you need to remove.
What sandpaper fits my drum sander?
Start with the machine, not the grit. Drum sanders use abrasive strips or wraps with machine-specific dimensions and attachment details. Before buying, check the manual or use the current abrasive as a template. Laguna’s manual, for example, gives model-specific strip dimensions and says the supplied wrap can be used as a template when cutting a replacement (Laguna manual).
- Backing and attachment: Check whether your machine requires plain-backed abrasive or another attachment system.
- Width: Match the strip width to the drum.
- Wrap length and end pattern: Follow the manual or trace the existing strip. Do not assume that a wrap made for one model will fit another.
Plain-backed drum sander abrasive rolls are one option: Maverick Abrasives lists aluminum-oxide cloth rolls in 3-, 4- and 6-inch widths and several grits, and advises matching the abrasive to the machine before choosing grit. Those listed sizes and variants are product-page details, not a guarantee of compatibility with any particular sander; check the current listing and your manual (Maverick Abrasives).
What grit sandpaper should I use on a drum sander?
Choose grit according to how rough the stock is and how much material you need to remove. Laguna’s chart offers this model-manufacturer guidance; it is not an absolute rule for every wood or machine (Laguna manual).
#1 Best Overall
- Sandpaper Roll: this sanding paper set includes a roll with 120 grit, measuring 3 inches wide and 100 feet long, making it compatible with machinery that accepts 3 inch wide sandpaper rolls
- Aluminum Oxide Abrasive: the wet dry sandpaper is coated with quality aluminum oxide abrasive, enabling long lasting sharpened cutting and reduced clogging; The resin bonded particles exhibit non loading characteristics, ensuring an extended sanding lifespan
- Wet and Dry Sanding: the backing of the drywall sandpaper allows for work on both damp and dry surfaces, suitable for wet and dry sanding applications without the hazard of tearing
- Versatile Applications: this drum sand paper set can be applied for various purposes such as sanding, smoothing, shaping, or polishing; It can be attached to drum sanders, palm sanders, hand sanding blocks, and other sanding tools
- Practical Gift: the drum sander sandpaper can be folded, torn, or cut to any desired length as per the requirement, making it a practical and versatile gift option; You can send them to your friend, family, woodworker and so on
| Grit | Laguna’s suggested use |
|---|---|
| 24–36 | Abrasive planing, rough-sawn stock and maximum removal |
| 50–60 | Surfacing and dimensioning; truing warped boards |
| 80–100 | Lighter dimensioning and reducing planer ripples |
| 120–150 | Light surfacing and finish sanding |
| 180–220 | Finish sanding only |
These ranges are a starting point. The appropriate choice depends on the condition of the stock, the result you want and the guidance for your specific machine. A drum sander removes material, so start with a grit that can do the job without making unnecessary passes, then refine the surface as needed.
How should I progress through grits?
Begin according to the stock’s roughness and the amount of material to remove, then move progressively finer. JET’s manual advises against skipping more than one grit grade; for fine furniture work, it suggests skipping no grades (JET manual).
Rank #2
- Precut for JET and Performax 16-32 drum sanders
- Medium abrasive, 120 grit, aluminum oxide
- Abrasive strips are 3-in. wide, cloth backed, resin bond, open coat
- Multipack includes four precut wraps
- Manufactured in the USA (with globally-sourced materials)
- Assess the board. Rough-sawn or uneven stock generally calls for a coarser starting point than stock that is already surfaced.
- Use the coarsest grit needed for the task. Avoid beginning finer than the material condition warrants if that would make removal inefficient.
- Refine in steps. Follow a progressive sequence, particularly when preparing a fine surface.
- Check the result before moving on. Stop when the surface meets the needs of the next operation rather than sanding through grits by habit.
Can a grit be too fine?
Yes. JET warns that an overly fine grit can burnish wood, which may lead to uneven stain acceptance; its manual gives oak as an example. The effect varies with the wood, so do not treat the finest available abrasive as automatically best for finish preparation (JET manual).
How do I maintain and clean drum-sander sandpaper?
Wood deposits can reduce an abrasive’s usefulness. Laguna recommends using a cleaning stick to remove deposits, while JET describes reversing the strip to expose fresh cutting edges (Laguna manual; JET manual). Follow your own machine’s instructions: cleaning and reversing procedures are not interchangeable across all sanders.

- Use eye protection during cleaning, as JET instructs.
- Keep clear of the exposed rotating drum and follow the machine’s safe procedure.
- Replace abrasive when cleaning or reversing no longer restores useful cutting performance.
How to choose a replacement roll
Use this order when comparing options: confirm the attachment and dimensions, then select a grit for the sanding task. A plain-backed roll is a product category, not a universal fit. No independent, controlled comparison establishes one brand or roll as best across drum sanders, so machine compatibility and job requirements are the practical basis for choosing.
