No pressure cooker can be called the “safest” based on the evidence available here: there is no independent head-to-head safety comparison. For a U.S. buyer, the practical approach is to compare the lid lock, pressure indicator, steam-release controls and fill guidance, then check the exact model against current recall notices. The Instant Pot Duo Plus 6QT V3 and Breville Fast Slow Pro BPR700 are feature-based examples, not safety rankings.

What makes a pressure cooker safer to use?

Look for features and instructions that help prevent opening under pressure, make remaining pressure easy to identify, and reduce exposure to escaping steam. These checks are useful evidence for comparing models, not a formal risk score or guarantee against injury.

  • Lid locking and pressure indication: The lid should remain locked while dangerous internal pressure remains, and the pressure indicator should be easy to see and understand.
  • Steam release: Check where the release control is located and how the manual explains quick, pulse and natural release. Instructions should help keep hands and face away from escaping steam.
  • Fill markings and food guidance: Markings should be legible and match the model’s instructions. Check the manual for maximum fill levels and warnings about foods that foam or expand.
  • Inspection and cleaning: The manual should explain how to inspect and clean the gasket, pressure valve and locking pin, and how to confirm the gasket is properly fitted.
  • Standards claims: CPSC lists UL 136, 8th Edition as a voluntary pressure-cooker standard and describes work with UL to strengthen safety provisions (CPSC: Pressure Cookers). A standard listing or manufacturer certification claim is not a guarantee of safe operation, and it does not establish that all products were independently tested to the same level.
  • Exact model and recall status: Identify the full model number on the appliance; check serial or batch details too when a notice requires them.

Capacity is a household-fit decision, not a safety advantage. Choose a size that suits your typical batches and storage space, and follow that model’s fill limits.

Two feature-based models to compare

These examples have manufacturer-published safety features that can be checked against the comparison points above. Neither is established as the safest cooker overall.

Model Published features and specifications What to check
Instant Pot Duo Plus 6QT Multi-Use Pressure Cooker, V3 Instant Pot describes more than 10 safety mechanisms, including overheat protection and an easy-seal safety lid lock. The product page lists a 6-quart capacity, UL/ULC listing, 120 V, 60 Hz and a one-year limited warranty. These are manufacturer-published attributes, not proof that the cooker cannot cause injury or a comparative safety certification. Use the manual for the precise model and version. Instant Pot provides a model manuals index.
Breville Fast Slow Pro BPR700 Breville describes a three-way safety system, safety locking lid, safety valve, pressure-release button and automatic release choices: quick, pulse and natural. Its manual gives model-specific directions for checking the valve and locking pin for blockage, fitting the gasket, respecting minimum and maximum fill levels, and not forcing the lid. Review the manual’s release and inspection instructions before use, including its direction to keep hands and face away from the pressure-release valve. Price and availability can change; check the manufacturer for current information.

Check recall notices before buying or continuing to use a cooker

Regulator notices apply to identified products, not every appliance sold under the same brand. Match the full model number—and any serial or batch details specified in the notice—rather than relying on a product photo or brand name. Follow the notice’s instructions: the remedy may be to stop using the appliance or a particular function, obtain a replacement part, or take another specified action.

  • Gourmia: In a February 24, 2026 warning, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urged consumers to stop using specified six-quart cookers immediately and dispose of them. CPSC said the lid could open while pressure remained, the float valve was difficult to see, and incorrect pot markings could contribute to overfilling. The warning covered about 43,500 cookers and reported five incidents, including four reports of severe second-degree burns. Check the CPSC Gourmia warning for the identified models and directions.
  • Ninja Foodi OP300 series: CPSC announced a recall on May 1, 2025, covering about 1,846,400 units in the U.S. and about 184,240 in Canada. The pressure-cooking lid could open during use. The notice directs owners to stop using the pressure-cooking function and seek the replacement-lid remedy. Check the CPSC Ninja Foodi recall for covered models and remedy details.
  • Insignia: CPSC’s notice, originally issued in 2023 and updated March 25, 2025, covers about 930,000 pressure cookers. Incorrect volume markings could lead to overfilling and hot contents being expelled; CPSC reported 31 incidents and 17 burn injuries. The notice says to keep the pot at or below two-thirds capacity, fully lock the lid and wait for the float valve to drop before opening. Those instructions apply to the covered products; use the CPSC Insignia notice to check coverage and remedy. Health Canada issued a corresponding notice for specified Canadian models (Health Canada notice).
  • Bella, Bella Pro Series, Cooks and Crux: Sensio’s 2023 recall covered about 860,000 electric and stovetop cookers because the lid could unlock and be removed during use, creating a burn hazard. Consult the CPSC Sensio recall for the affected products and remedy.

These reported incident counts describe the named warnings and recalls; they are not a statistical study or a rate for pressure cookers generally.

Use the instructions for your exact model

Gasket fit, locking mechanisms, release controls and fill guidance vary by product. Use the manual for the exact model and version, not a general procedure from another cooker. CPSC staff’s 2024 letter to UL recommended that instructions tell consumers: “Do not open the pressure cooker until the unit has cooled and all internal pressure has been released.” It also said: “If the lid is difficult to remove, this indicates that the cooker is still pressurized – do not force it open.” These are staff recommendations in a standards-development letter, not a claim about final universal standard text. Read the CPSC staff letter.

Never force a lid that resists, and do not assume that a cool exterior means the contents are depressurized. Follow the release method, fill limits and inspection directions in your cooker’s manual. If your model appears in a regulator notice, follow that notice’s remedy rather than relying on general operating advice.
