Plan the whole exhaust route, not just the cap
The cap is one part of the system. Use smooth, rigid metal duct, keep the route as short and direct as practical, and minimize elbows. PNNL recommends these practices to support airflow and says the exhaust should discharge outdoors. Follow the hood manual for the permitted duct configuration.
Plan the duct, roof opening, flashing, and hood connection together. The U.S. Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s June 2024 roof-vent job aid recommends a collar matching the exhaust outlet or a rigid metal transition, sealed connections, an integrated collar and flashing, a weather-appropriate fitting, and weather sealing that directs water away from the penetration. Check local termination rules before installation
Range hood exhaust must terminate outdoors, but the required location and clearances depend on the code adopted by the local authority having jurisdiction, including any local amendments. PNNL’s guidance discusses separation from property lines, windows, and air inlets under the 2018 International Residential Code framework; do not treat those provisions as universal or silently apply them as the current local rule.

The 2024 IRC is a model code, not automatically the law in every jurisdiction. Confirm the locally adopted edition, permit requirements, and authority requirements before work begins. - Read the hood manual. Record the required duct size, shape, and configuration.
- Compare cap specifications. Check the exact model’s collar dimensions, supported duct shape, damper arrangement, and installation instructions.
