Choose a cap that matches the hood’s duct outlet and preserves at least the outlet’s airflow area when the cap damper is fully open. Greenheck’s RJ6X9 is one documented candidate for systems using up to 3¼ × 10-inch rectangular or 8-inch round duct—not a universal choice. Confirm compatibility with both product manuals, the roof, and local requirements before buying.
Start with the hood outlet and duct size
Find the range hood’s model number and consult its installation manual. Identify the outlet shape and size, the duct size the maker recommends, and whether the hood has a supplied damper. A cap’s advertised duct connection is not enough by itself: the complete air path, including the cap opening with its damper open, should not be smaller than the hood’s discharge opening.
For example, the Greenheck Model RJ6X9 roof-cap instructions specify acceptance of up to 3¼ × 10-inch rectangular or 8-inch round duct. That makes it a candidate only when those dimensions suit the hood and duct system. The document describes product-specific installation; verify the current product information and fit before purchase.
Do not assume that a cap with a larger nominal duct connection necessarily has an adequately sized open outlet. Trade-Wind advises that the actual open outlet area, with the damper fully open, should equal or exceed the ventilator discharge-port area. Its guidance applies to its systems; check the instructions for the hood and cap being installed.

Compare caps by the factors that affect fit

The available manufacturer documents do not establish comparative airflow ratings, long-term durability, prices, warranties, or current inventory across roof caps. A product recommendation beyond documented size compatibility would therefore be unsupported.
Choose the damper arrangement from the exact manuals
Backdraft dampers help limit air moving back through the duct when the fan is off, but instructions differ on how to handle multiple dampers. COSMO’s KS6U manual says not to use the hood-supplied damper when the roof or wall cap has one. Another hood manual allows both but says they reduce suction and recommends removing one. Trade-Wind advises against adding an inline damper when its roof or wall cap already contains one.

These are model-specific directions, not a single rule for all hoods. Check the hood and cap manuals together before removing, retaining, or adding a damper. In cold-weather installations, COSMO recommends an additional backdraft damper and thermal break; apply that advice only where appropriate to the model and installation.
Plan the duct route and outdoor termination
The exhaust must terminate outdoors, not in an attic or other enclosed space. COSMO’s KS6U instructions recommend rigid metal duct, a uniform duct size, a short run, and limited elbows. Follow the selected hood’s requirements for duct material and routing; bends and transitions should not be improvised in a way that reduces the required air path.

For its systems, Trade-Wind warns that an undersized cap air path can raise static pressure and impair ventilation. It also specifies a bird screen and says not to add an inline damper when its cap includes one. Those details should not be transferred automatically to other products; the cap and hood instructions govern the installation.
Install and seal the roof cap as specified
Roof work must suit the particular cap, roofing material, and roof construction. For the RJ6X9, Greenheck’s instructions describe cutting the roof opening, inserting and trimming the duct, placing the back flange under the shingles, nailing the flange, and sealing the nail heads with roof cement. COSMO’s KS6U manual directs the installer to caulk around the exterior roof opening.

COSMO’s manual notes that requirements depend on local codes and specified CFM, but the available sources do not establish a universal threshold. Check the current rules for your location and the range hood’s manual rather than relying on a nationwide figure.

Information to confirm before buying
- The hood’s make, model, outlet shape, and outlet dimensions.
- The duct size specified by the hood maker and the cap’s supported connection size.
- The cap’s unobstructed outlet area with its damper fully open.
- Whether the cap includes a damper and what the hood manual says about dampers.
- Your roof pitch and roofing material, plus the cap’s flashing and sealing instructions.
- Any cold-weather provisions and local makeup-air or other code requirements.
