Compare interior dimensions with the items you plan to store, check the exterior footprint against your available space, and verify the exact model’s seating or loading rating. Manufacturer listings offer useful examples, but they are specifications, not independent test results.
How to choose a resin deck box
- Measure what you will store. Compare the usable interior dimensions with cushions, tools, sports equipment or pool accessories. Capacity in gallons does not tell you whether a long cushion or bulky item will fit.
- Check the deck and access route. Compare exterior width, depth and height with the spot where the box will sit, and measure gates or walkways it must pass through.
- Confirm the load rating for the exact model. A box that looks like a bench is not automatically rated for seating. Use the maker’s stated rating and terminology.
- Consider opening and security. A piston-assisted lid may be easier to operate. A lockable latch or padlock-compatible design does not necessarily include a padlock.
- Read the weather and warranty language. Weather-resistant does not mean waterproof or suitable for submersion. Warranty length and terms vary by model; check the product documentation.

The dimensions and capacities above come from the manufacturers’ product pages, not comparative laboratory testing. Interior dimensions are particularly useful when checking whether specific items will fit; where they are not stated here, do not assume that nominal capacity answers the fit question.
Can a resin deck box stay outdoors in the rain?
Keter describes its deck boxes as protecting contents from UV rays and rain, while clarifying that they are weather-resistant and not intended for submersion. It recommends confirming that the lid is fully shut during storms. Treat these as outdoor-weather storage boxes, not waterproof containers for valuable or water-sensitive belongings. Can you use a deck box as extra seating?
Only rely on the seating or loading figure for the precise model you are considering, and preserve the manufacturer’s wording. For example, Suncast lists a 300 lb lid seat capacity for the DB9200WD, while Keter lists a 770 lb loading capacity for its 135-gallon Signature and a 600 lb loading capacity for its 165-gallon Signature. Those ratings are not interchangeable, and neither establishes the rating of another model.

- Firewood: Keter advises against storing it in a closed deck box. A water-resistant enclosure can trap moisture and contribute to mold; use a ventilated shed or open rack instead.
- Sealed pool chemicals: If stored in a deck box, keep them separate from cushions, towels and other organic materials, and keep the lid tightly secured to limit corrosive fumes. Follow the chemical product’s storage instructions.
