Before comparing airflow, noise, lights or finishes, measure the opening behind your cabinet, then match its shape, size, centerline and position to the hood’s installation manual. “Rear vent” describes where the hood discharges air; it does not guarantee that the hood will connect to your particular opening.
What “rear vent” means
A rear-vent, or horizontal-exhaust, hood sends cooking air straight through the wall behind the hood. Many under-cabinet models are convertible and can discharge through the top or rear, but the option is model-specific. A hood advertised only with vertical/top ducting will not satisfy a direct-through-the-wall installation without changing the duct route.

- Outlet dimensions, such as 3-1/4 by 10 inches.
- Outlet centerline and distance from the cabinet and wall.
- Whether the outlet is supplied, requires a damper or adapter, or is available only on certain widths.
A nominally similar opening can still miss the hood outlet by an inch or more. Do not order until those measurements agree.

Rear-vent models worth comparing
The examples below document rear or horizontal exhaust in manufacturer material. They are fit and specification references, not a tested ranking; airflow figures from different brands are not directly comparable without the same rating method and test conditions.

How to choose a hood that will actually fit
1. Match width to the cooking surface
Measure the cooktop or range, not just the cabinet. A hood should provide adequate capture coverage for the appliance and the available cabinet width. The examples above are primarily 30-inch models, while the Zephyr Hurricane also has a 36-inch version. Do not substitute a wider hood if the cabinet, wall opening or mounting structure cannot accept it.

2. Match the rear outlet and duct
Record the existing wall opening’s width, height, centerline and distance from the cabinet bottom. A 3-1/4 by 10-inch rectangular opening is specifically documented for the Broan 403002 and Hauslane UC-B018, but that does not prove that every 3-1/4 by 10-inch hood has the same outlet position. Compare the drawing in the chosen manual with your wall opening before removing the old hood.
3. Compare airflow on a like-for-like basis
Broan lists 210 maximum blower CFM for the 403002 and 260 maximum blower CFM for the BUEZ330SS. Zephyr lists 290, 390 and 695 CFM for the Hurricane product line. These are manufacturer-published figures with product-specific descriptions, not independent side-by-side measurements. Ask what speed, pressure condition and certification basis each number represents before treating one hood as more powerful.

4. Check sound, filters, lights and controls
After fit and ducting are confirmed, compare the features that affect daily use:
- Published sound levels at each fan speed, rather than a single “quiet” claim.
- Grease-filter material, dishwasher guidance and replacement availability.
- Lighting type, brightness and whether bulbs or modules are replaceable.
- Push-button, rocker, slider or electronic controls and their accessibility.
- Warranty terms and the service network in your region.
- Ducted-only operation versus convertible recirculation.
Ducting requirements for a rear discharge
Use the duct size specified for the selected hood and keep the route as short and smooth as practical. Broan-NuTone’s range-hood guidance calls for metal duct, prefers smooth metal over flexible metal because ridges can reduce airflow, and warns against 4-inch dryer duct and plastic duct. Do not reduce the outlet to a smaller duct to reuse an existing piece; that can increase resistance and noise.

Use a properly sized wall cap and damper suited to the duct. Seal joints with materials approved for ductwork, and support the duct so its weight is not carried by the hood cabinet. If the existing opening is offset, too small or in the wrong shape, the safe options are to modify the wall duct or choose a hood whose outlet drawing matches it—not to force the hood into alignment.

Broan-NuTone gives 24 to 30 inches as general guidance from the cooking surface to the bottom of a hood, but that range is not a universal code or a substitute for the selected hood’s instructions. Follow the hood manual, the range or cooktop manufacturer’s clearance requirements and applicable local code. Gas appliances may require a different minimum than electric appliances.
- Turn off power at the circuit breaker and verify that the old hood is de-energized.
- Measure the cooktop, cabinet, wall opening and duct centerline; photograph the existing connection before removal.
- Confirm the new hood’s width, mounting points, rear outlet dimensions and damper arrangement in its manual.
- Prepare the metal duct and wall cap at the specified size; remove restrictions, sharp unnecessary bends and flexible-dryer-style tubing.
- Install the hood at the manual’s height, secure it to the cabinet or wall structure, connect the duct and seal the joint.
- Complete the electrical connection as directed, restore power and test every fan speed, light and damper for vibration or leakage.
When recirculation is the only practical option
Some convertible hoods, including the Hauslane UC-B018 example, can operate without an outdoor duct when fitted with separately sold charcoal filters. Recirculation returns filtered air to the room; it is not equivalent to exhausting smoke, moisture and combustion by-products outdoors. Use it only where duct installation is genuinely impractical and replace filters on the schedule specified by the manufacturer.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Hood width fits the range and cabinet.
- Rear or horizontal exhaust is explicitly documented for the exact model and size.
- Rear outlet shape, dimensions and centerline match the wall opening.
- Duct material is metal and its size follows the hood specification.
- Airflow numbers have a stated rating basis you can compare.
- Noise, filter cleaning, lighting, controls and warranty suit your use.
- Mounting height and electrical requirements are compatible with the appliance and local rules.
- Current availability, manual and replacement parts have been checked—especially for discontinued listings such as Broan 403002.
The Bottom Line
Choose by outlet geometry first, then compare airflow, sound and features. A hood with the right rear-vent label but the wrong outlet position will not be a drop-in replacement for a wall duct.
